To be honest, after watching that £800 with a dealer is a bargain! Much bigger job than I thought. Great video Kev 👍

Did this job on my 2014 VFR, didn’t want to pay $1000 in labor. Bought the special tools and still came out ahead with the savings. Although time consuming, I’m glad I did it because I had two slightly tight valves, one of them a VTEC bucket.

side note: vtec valves have x2 service limit than normal valves. so, if you don't wanna fiddle with the v-tec valves just check the normal valves which i did when i had my valve clearence.

Hi Kev - Great video! I'm half way through doing mine now, thanks to you. I cable tied the cam chain to the sprockets just as an added measure to ensure the chain stays in the same place. Thought it might help others!

Thank you for this video. I've wondered why this job is so expensive to have done in a shop; now I know. I had several reactions. First, I worked as a software engineer for USAirways maintenance and engineering for 16 years. Several times I got to tour their maintenance facility in Pittsburgh, where they work on stuff like engines (they have a test cell where they can thoroughly test a jet engine in operation; I was there when it was in use), fuselage parts, electrical components, and coffee makers (you can't fly passengers without a coffee maker). I can't see much difference between working on this bike's engine and a 737, other than scale. In fact, the 737 engines might be easier (just 3 bolts to remove and off it comes!). Second, it's clear that this engine was designed for use in their racing bikes, where ease of maintenance is secondary to performance. (There's a pit crew for maintenance.) Compare this engine to the one in the NC750X. Checking valve clearances on the NC750X is simple (at least, from the video I've seen): remove the radiator and a few other bits, and there the valves are, easily checked with a feeler gauge and adjusted with screws. The NC750X engine was designed so that even posers like me can work on it. It's not nearly as much fun to ride, but it's easier to live with. I can't wait to watch parts 2 and 3!

My self do night shift at merc always loads to do due 2 lack off staff its a world wide thing lack off hgv mechanics one thing for sure i will be never out off work .

Great video, gripping stuff, even though I have a 5th gen and not 6th. Would a clean lint free cloth be a good idea to gently poke into the chasm into the engine and prevent anything falling in as you remove or refit bolts and washers? I think this is what I would do as I am a bit clumsy. Thanks for making this video series of this job. Not for the faint hearted!

I just paid CAN $1800 to find out I have a cracked cam holder. Of course you cant just buy the one part... Honda sells the whole top end kit for $2000. So I went bought me a Moto Guzzi instead. Then I just met a machinist, says he can weld my cam holder then machine it. Only catch, hes retiring in a month. So Thank to your video, along with my maintenance manual. Ill be ripping my vfr apart tomorrow.

Kev Thanks for sharing that. I am planing to do this job myself although I had Honda VTec Vfr 800 before. Had also VFF 800 fi, now got pleasure to own Honda VFR 750 02 reg. Planing to do this job myself. My dealer 2 year ago asked 600 pounds for this job. This year i asked how much would 750 vfr cost delaer quote me 750 quid. So will do it myself. Do you have any tips on how to put camshafts back in position in head so they exactly where they were. I seen some tips like cable tie on sprocket and chain and mark another camshaft with marker and do one at the time. Seen people how easy to misaligning by one tooth and bike was loosing power etc. ? Any tips on that? 750 model with sprockets through middle of head. No chain, no VTEC valves. 800 sprockets were on side of head. Never done this before. Like to try to make sure bike spot on. No much history on my VFR has 46k not sure valves ever been done

@KevsShed
@KevsShed 3 года назад
The valves on the 5th Gen are just like the non-VTEC ones in the 6th Gen, all 16 valves are regular valves and to check them is easy! Cam cover off, turn the crank to TDC on the compression stroke for each cylinder and gauge them, no pulling of camshafts etc!

I know this is a little late, but I find Partzilla (not revzilla) . Genuine Honda parts are a LOT cheaper. If you make the postage worth your while and order a few bits it saves you a fortune even if HMRC take their import duty.

@Kev's Shed Seriously though I loved the vid. I really appreciate your helping me to make an informed choice. I have just retired and am looking to return to biking after 18 years or so. VFR was on the shortlist (largely due to fond memories of watching 1980s road racing - V Four Victory etc. However funds may be too tight for complex professional work, and although I'm a pretty competent spanner wielder my dodgy back and mild arthritis now makes this a chore. If I can get a bike that's had the work done recently then great; I doubt I will ever put enough mileage on to need it doing again. How much simpler is the job on a 5th or earlier generation with gear driven cams?
@KevsShed
@KevsShed 2 года назад
@@neilanyon4792 Much simpler on the 5th Gen mate, no need to take each camshaft out twice, only need to be removed if a shim is required, it would take half the time!
