I have a tip that it is tested for long time by varadero and AfricaTwin riders in Greece. It is a common issue of the fuel pump failure. The tip is to use a KYOSAN EP-8010 car pump, Mazda use those. It last for long,long time and it costs about 50euros it should be around 40-45 $. It needs only a small modification, just cut the plastic housing brackets to fit it in the rubber holder mount. Only for the carburetor version!!!

I washoping it would be the later injection doofer. it turns , and there's juice but it won't catch. looking to see if there's sparkie tomorrow. the fuel pump is a completely different arrangement.

Very helpful mate done the filters, oil and brakes after watching your videos and looking forward to doing more. What signs did the fuel pump give for you to replace did the bike struggle to start, excelerate or just wouldn’t start? my varadero has a good charge from battery but been out for an hour stopped for a brew when I went to start there was nothing no lights or anything left her 5 then started as if nothing was wrong. Was thinking it was starter or maybe the HISS security system is maybe on the blink, what your opinion and thoughts. Regards Danny

Thanks Dan, the bike will be coming in the garage for a major stripdown soon as it needs some tlc as it has nearly 93K miles on it, as for the fuel pump i have gone through a few so kinda recognise the signs, never hard to start just feel it more in acceleration splutters as if it is starving itself of fuel, i have not had the problem you described, i changed out my battery when i bought it to a Motobatt, never use anything else, start first time everytime, check the connections from the battery to the starter solenoid relay, and the fuse in the relay as can corrode

Hi mate, can you tell me what we're the symptoms of the failure , I am having an intermittent problem on my varadero carby it starts OK but within 100meters it cuts out and gets like a clunk from the front end now that I've seen where the fuel pump is it seems to be in that location. It's been in twice for carb balance and cleaning but to no avail, hopefully your video will shed some light on the matter. Great Channel pal I've added it to my favourites
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder 2 года назад
Thanks, glad you like the channel, one thing worth checking is the fuel cut out relay which is behind the dash on the right hand side, they do fail which will stop the pump, can cause intermittent problems, mine was a cheap Chinese pump, symptoms of mine were spluttering and cutting out when hot, but fine when cold, you should be able to hear the pump prime when you turn on the ignition

Thanks for the video! Can you please tell me if the fuel pump is supposed to be heard working before i even push the start button? I cannot start the engine, tried a few tricks with the power switch that i read, but still nothing. So was wondering if the pump is at fault.
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder 3 года назад
Thanks Bill, it does make a noise when the pump primes, but difficult to hear from the rider position as so far away, they are prone to fail, this i think is my third pump

@@TheAmateurBikeBuilder Thanks for replying! So this means, even though the engine doesn't start, i should hear the pump whirling. Sadly, it doesn't.. Guess i'll have to replace it. Be safe my friend!

Good job, man! Please can u tell what are the positions of the fuel tap for a 1999 Vara xl 1000. On mine, there are no indication (on, off, reserve)
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder Год назад
Hi, sorry for the late reply, ON is in the facing down position ( 6 oclock on both sides) and OFF is in the ) 3oclock left hand tap /9 oclock right hand tap ) if in the down ON position Reserve is Automatic via fuel light on dash, then you have approx 4 Litres of fuel left

Which of the two tourers do you like the best ie the varadero or the st please?
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder
@TheAmateurBikeBuilder Год назад
oh tough one, i love them both but the ST gets it slightly as more comfortable and better tank range, but the luggage on the varadero holds more, ST is shaft drive which is better, no chain and sprockets to buy

@@TheAmateurBikeBuilder Ok thank you I have picked up this one it’s not been started for 5 years. I can hear some thing on the right side of the battery. But not sure what it is yet. It’s was just cranking over will not fire. So tank off and I give it some fuel in the lnlets and some easy start. I can get it to start like this. So I’m thinking it’s not getting Petrol up. I have to run more tests. Do you have to put fuel in both fuel pipes do you think to test it?. Save me fitting the tank all the time lol Thanks

@@Fire-gv2wz it all works on vacuum, there are 2 fuel taps, on each side of the tank, check they are turned on, check all hoses as a leak can hinder the engine from starting, i am not familiar with the fuel injected version that you have, so hope that helps
