Passion... great video

Thanks Marcin. Passion is a perfect word to describe this mod. The motorbike did not become any better, the original black engine died and was replaced with 98 one. But after all it was interesting to play and see whether different parts fit or not.

Hey man! Great job! I have a question: is the xrv rear shock the same as the transalp's or you made some mods to mount it to the frame of the bike? I have the same xlv, same year, it's just black and I really think on puttin'a rear shock from Africa twin... Is it possible just to replace the thing or I have to make more changes on the bike? Salutes!
@KEcAzZ1
@KEcAzZ1 9 лет назад
Hey, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to replace the shock only (without changing the swing-arm) - then I can not answer your question. The mounting holes fits without any problem. What we did - we have changed the swing-arm to Africa's one. Also have changed linkage from XLV to XRV, however, there was no need to do it, because XLV linkage fits to XRV swing-arm like a charm. BUT, using XRV swing-arm, linkage and the shock - we had to remove some metal from linkage (see video 1:30), make new U-form connecting point (see video 1:43). Some changes must be done (minor, mainly removing some metal from the parts, making it smaller), because, in our case, the XRV shock gave as too much clearance.

Big hi from India. thanks to your video, i am doing a Rd04 swingarm swap on my pd10 1996 as i found one cheap on ebay.de. i was wondering how much lighter the aluminum swingarm is, compared to the steel one from the TA ? thanks in advance.
@KEcAzZ1
@KEcAzZ1 6 лет назад
Hi Alinel, unfortunately I did not weight them before the swap. Thus, I cannot answer your question. What you could do, is to look for shipping weight from ebay for both, RD04 and pd10 swingarms. From what I remember, I would not say that there is much weight difference. The RD04 swingarm is beefier and made of aluminum rather than steel. This already gives some advantages over the PD10. However, the difference it is not like day and night and I would consider the swap more like fun work to do than the major improvement of the bike. Good luck!

thanks a lot for the reply ! I will surely weigh them and share them when I do the swap. The reason i asked was, i swapped a xr200 steel swing arm from an older 1986 xr250 aluminium and it was half the weight, and we shaved 7 kgs weight from the bike. I am doing the swap to mostly because i live in a coastal city and everything rusts here, and maybe i will swap the front with rd03 forks with single disk and again save from weight and gain some ground clearnace. thanks again for your reply, cheers and all the best.

Hi Alinel, exactly! As you have said " i live in a coastal city and everything rusts here". In your case the swap is more justifiable. About the clearance - yes, it increased somewhat, however, now I have a problem with a chain guard. Because the swingarm angle have changed (clearance increased) the chain is more likely to etch the slider. If I do not lube it properly or drive in sand extensively, the chain starts scrubbing against the aluminum of the swingarm pretty fast... Nevertheless, with all this struggle after the swap, I find having some air in the cross track more ensuring than I would have had with old the configuration. Good luck!

do you think the swing arm angle will change drastically if I use the TA600 linkage along with stiffer springs in shock ?
@KEcAzZ1
@KEcAzZ1 6 лет назад
I would not say drastically, but it will certainly change (clearance will increase). Interestingly, the spring from RD04 shock was much softer than the spring from TA600 in my case. I finished up using the spring from TA600, which to be honest, is too stiff. Fully loaded (side boxes+top box + passenger) its just right, but if I drive alone, there is basically no dampening. The linkage between TA600 and RD04 is the same (as far as i remember). Another question - do you use shocks from TA or RD04? Since the swap happened couple of years ago, I can not 100% remember the small details (whether the shock length was the same, etc.)

Transalp asies ilgis i KTM sakes is bedos tiko (taciau reikejo varzta tekint).

Mano 600. Matai Mano galine sake supuvusi juodai. Galvoju but geras modas xrv sake ideti aliumas vis del to. Amortika rd04 afrikos turiu jau senai gal tik reiktu siust restauruoti. Motociklas siuo metu iki pliko remo isardytas Pas mane darbe.

Hi, does the rd04 swingarm fit straight onto the transalp?
@KEcAzZ1
@KEcAzZ1 10 лет назад
Hey, yes, it does. It fits to 1987 year transalp without any serious modifications. You might need some minor spacers. Much bigger problem is the rear brake. In old transalps there is drum brakes. However, you can fit it quite easy. Search for info in the internet (in ADV rider).
