I'm new to making videos, The biggest problem I'm facing is getting the courage to promote it on instagram or Facebook, where ppl I actually know see me. I know some pretty mean and "judgey" people, how do you get past that shyness?
I know you're not asking me lol but girl I had the same issue posting on my facebook and instagram but I finally did. I still feel a little awkward when I do it but I realized that a lot of my friends are actually into my videos and watch them regularly without me even realizing it. You just have to take the first step and do it! :)

omg that's my problem too! when i started i was unsure - do i want to start from the ground up, or tell my friends and family what i'm doing? so far i've only told like one person i know.
I LOVE how honest this is. I am in that little transition right now, finishing paying off my Macbook this month. Constantly trying to improve. This is 100% worth it. I get the same weird reactions to people hearing what I do, but this is all I could ever ask for as a career. This is all that I want. Thank you for more inspiration.
As someone who has been doing RU-vid for many years, you've hit a lot of great points and have encouraged me to keep pushing! Although I'm not much of a makeup channel, everything you're saying still holds true. RU-vid has been one of the most hard and demanding things I've done, but the reward is amazing. I've struggled to stay consistent because I lost sight of my goals and my passion weakens. Thanks for helping me see clearly again! 🙂
This is by far one of the best RU-vid advice videos, I'm starting to post twice a week, but the only thing for me is figuring out what my channel is about. I'm just like you as far as personality I'm a crazy and goofy person and I want to show that, but I see myself doing more hair videos because that's what people like to see from me (based off my views) and by you saying don't let people run your channel that just inspired me to post what I want and if people don't like it and want to unsubscribe that's fine at least I know who my real "fans" are.

For filming this, because of this video I finally took the leap I’ve been wanting to take for the absolute longest. I started my own beauty channel. & honestly there was no awkwardness for me behind the camera or to sit there & film & upload. Now I’ve only done 3, but I’ve been uploading lately every other day. But I just wanted to say thank you Laura, for getting me to take the jump that I’ve been wanting to do for so long. I’ve always been passionate about make up but just got really serious about it, almost a year & a half ago. So thank you again, so much.
I started my channel and it was the most bold move. People I know personally don't even support me but I won't let it stop me. Sometimes u gotta let those so-called fans go and shoot for the stars.
I had mine and last year i would post videos and a few people in my school made fun of me for it. I started it up again and all my friends love that I do it and I dont listen to what peope say because if it is something you emjoy do it!
Totally agree I started my channel 6 years ago when no one was on RU-vid now I wish I didn't pick makeup by... RU-vid takes a lot of time and hard with and not everyone makes it so don't be too hard on yourself guys enjoy it that's the main thing x

I love RU-vid so much. It’s genuinely my passion and I’m uploading regularly and love my content! It’s hard not seeing an audience grow. But starting my RU-vid channel was the best thing that ever happened to me. I love being creative. I hate when people are like “oh you just want to be famous and get attention” like actually no, I love having an audience because it’s a COMMUNITY. It’s people that have joined your life with you and are on board for whatever you do! ❤️
I absolutely love RU-vid as well and love filming! My teacher friends laugh at me when I tell them Im going home after school to film and edit and don't understand why I'm putting So much time and effort into it. Cuz I love it, duh! Hah

my biggest thing was getting over the fact that eventually people from school would find my youtube channel, and when it finally did happen it was the most awkward thing ever and i literally wanted to go home that night and delete my channel- that was 2 months ago and i’m so glad that i didn’t delete my channel. i hated thinking that kids from my school saw my videos but i didn’t want that to stop me and now i’m comfortable talking about my channel at school and i’m so glad that i gained that confidence!!

I totally get this. I'm a mom of 3 and full time worker and I've been doing RU-vid for 2 years. I am almost at 5k subs. So I'm growing really slow lol. People in my real life ask me all the time why I still do it. I tell them it's because I do this for me! This is something that I get to have for myself since my job and my kids take up all of my other time. Lol it's just something that I love and that's why I do it! 😊
I'm glad I clicked on this.. over the past week I've decided I'm probably gonna start a channel, granted it's not going to be beauty, it's going to be me opening up myself to the world about the 10+ years of abuse i lived through, how I got through it, and my healing journey. but my biggest reason Im still hesitating is that "fear of RU-vid hate" so thank you for helping me realize it might not be as bad a I'm imagining. I appreciate this video so much because I am just starting out on RU-vid and all these worries run through my head regarding hate/people won't like my content/don't have a lot of makeup because I want to grow in the beauty area. But I've come to realise that being yourself is super important because no-one else can copy your personality and it makes your channel/videos unique! really good advice! i definitely will start implementing this into my channel. ☺️ the point about how it takes awhile and a lot of hard work to get anything back from youtube is so right on. if you see any youtuber talk about how they got started, they almost always say that it took them YEARS! it’s about stamina and who can outlast the competition with all the hard work they put into videos

My family thought it was weird at first too and they didn't understand why I wanted to do it. Now they are on board. I don't think I would be able to record around them. But they do watch my videos and then talk to me about them and give me advice on things I can do to make it better for the next video.
I've been doing youtube for over 2 yrs now and my biggest difficulty is being consistent! With juggling school, and my mother keep telling me to get a "real" job (because she thinks this is just a hobby I like to do) It's hard to keep motivated. But Im working on it though because I know making videos is something I love to do and I see myself doing this for a long time.
This is making me so excited to get ready and start RU-vid, iv3 been wanting to do this since I was like 16 hahaha. I've been watching you and so many other people for a very long time. I love editing and filming so I'm just even more excited to start!!
I love videos like this. I started a RU-vid channel two months ago and I can't believe I didn't start one sooner. I really love thinking of new videos and the creativity that comes with it. all of this advice is so spot on! I've just started YT and can't afford a decent camera so I just use my phone (I used webcam for a bit as well!!) and I definitely feel a bit crap compared to the youtubers with amazing canons and decent lighting and things. Just gotta be patient and work hard :D
I started off making RU-vid videos on my iPhone! But seriously if you love and are passionate about RU-vid then just do it! Eventually I got a nice camera but its so nice to look back on how it all began!

Great video. I have a channel about makeup and hair tutorials but I would like to start showing my personality more. I used to feel so weird talking to the camera but I'm finally getting used to it! It's fun but I can definitely agree that it is A LOT of work! I can admit I haven't been as consistent as I would like but I'm not going to stop 😊👍

And to the people asking for subs back...honestly think about what kind of community you want. Do you want a bunch of people who subbed to you just because they wanted attention on their own channel or people who subbed to you because they like what you do?
Yess!!!! 100%! I hate the whole sub for sub thing because it does not work! It's much better to have a smaller number of subscribers than to have a large one with nobody actually watching.

It is really hard starting out and putting so much work with very few people watching! But count it as a blessing because you can make all your mistakes and learn from them without too many people seeing it in the beginning! I'm so glad that my first video didn't have too many views because it's SOOO bad Lol!

just go for it ... The first video is terrifying .. But after that you will get use to it & get addicted to making videos. Every time I upload a video I feel like i'm actually doing what I love.. I'm very serious about my channel so I kind of went all out.. I got a DSLR camera because it's the best for videos to get HD.. & I had a PC & I would edit with windows movie maker but like laura said it would crash every 5 mins, I invested on a Mac book & I use iMovie now I like it so much better its easy to use & gives you great editing options.. The best lighting you can use is natural lighting unfortunatly for me I film at night cause of work so I got a likthing kit on amazon for such a good price.. Thank you for being so open. I only see the polished side of the videos, so I thought I had to get it right from the get-go, which is paralyzing. I’ve been on the fence for so long about putting my goofy self out there. I’m a Realtor and most people in real estate are stuffy and create stuffy content. I want to help people and make it fun in the process. I’m so freakin’ awkward on camera and that has stopped me. Your advice helped me see that it’s a process and it will evolve as time goes on.

I'm a very new and beginner as a beauty youtuber. For now the only things I worried about is the products I use. I don't have many makeup and also don't have so much money to buy new makeup every weeks, so sometimes I feel like my viewer will get bored with my vid cause of the same products that I use over and over again. It's been 2 months since I started my channel, and I still haven't get 50 subs. This also make me frustated :(

I am literally doing everything you said I started RU-vid about 3 1/2 years ago on my iPhone 4 which I have upgraded immensely but my channel isn't growing 😔 I am constantly posting and editing videos after a full hard 8hr shift at work but I am not growing , because I'm not making progress it's so hard to keep motivation, this would be completely different if I did the same thing I'm doing and made progress but I'm not even at 1,000 subscribers yet after almost 4 years , I don't know what I am doing wrong 🙍🏽
GBeautyJ it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong necessarily. there's just so much competition out there. Just like with musicians, actors, etc not everyone will make it. Keep doing it if you love it.
