Glad I found your review. I was about to purchase that same shotgun. I will wait for now until the finish quality has improved. Spending $2k on a shotgun I would expect the finish to last.

Yes. It is unfortunate. The other way to go I think would be to buy the shotgun in the black version and then have someone professionally cerakote it

I've got a first gen maxus, same issues with the trigger wear & couple scratches, but I've hunted it hard for a decade and it's reliable year after year.

Yeah mine has been very reliable. So I definitely appreciate that definitely love the gun just have some nitpicky things with it. Thanks for the comment!

Wow, that finish is not what I expect from Browning. Great review!

Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it. I would expect the cerakote to last much longer and not rub off just from slinging it on my shoulder. Makes me wonder if it's actually got a cerakote on it.

I agree on the finish being cheap mine looks the same
@final_fall
@final_fall 10 месяцев назад
Well I'm sorry that it has happened to you. It make me wonder if they used a cheap cerakote. Like maybe just the spray on one that doesn't need to be baked to cut costs and they can still call it cerakote. I have another gun that I had a cerakote put on and it's in significantly better shape than my maxus. Which is unfortunate.

Good review and glad to see a field used shotgun review. Seems like Browning continues to cut corners on finish. Duratouch and Salt cured wood are two prior lessions that this maker seemingly did not learn from. Too bad as the function of the Maxus and Maxus II have been really top notch. I would galdly do away with the fancy design in the Wicked Wing Cerakote finish to have a thicker more durable finish.
@final_fall
@final_fall 10 месяцев назад
I would agree. Even though the ceramote wicked wing finish is cool, a more durable, harder cerakote would be preferable. And eventually I'll have it redone myself. Which is unfortunate that a 2k gun has to have the cerakote finish redone

I have an original Browning maxus hunter model and the high gloss wood is amazing
@final_fall
@final_fall 9 месяцев назад
Yeah. I'm sure the wood finish is amazing. They really make some nice wood model guns. Unfortunately, wood doesn't hold up as well in the mud and water. And I personally feel like if you take a nice gun with a high-quality wood stock to the duck blind, you're violating the Geneva Code and should be thrown in prison for terrorism. It's just not right. They don't deserve that kind of abuse. Leave the wood to the upland hunters.

You have the OG bottomland. I have the updated version bottomland on my maxus 2 WW. 0 hiccups. Shoots everything I throw in it. Hunted it in 100 degree weather to negative temps in a blizzard. Cycles awesome. Yeah the ceramide and paint are chipping. It’s not the guns fault. It’s just part of hunting.
@final_fall
@final_fall 4 месяца назад
Yeah there are two bottomland colors. The old one I have and then mossy oak updated the bottomland. I prefer the color of the old school bottomland. I just think they could have used a better cerakote. I had my sx4 cerakoted after market and it has not had any issues with it coming off. My dad's has an after market cerakote and it also hasn't worn off like that.

I have a x bolt rifle with teflon rubber materials and its a nasty sticky gluey mess right now. But dammit I love the gun and have not contacted Browning for a stock replacement. I noticed on a newer rifle, the parts are cheap as well. On shotguns, I have a maxus 2 on order but heard about the rubber inlets coming off. I'm willing to chance the function for the cosmetic failures but damit like you said for a $2k gun if they don't bring quality back I got other brands knocking on my wallet. Sometimes we have to boycott a brand that's gone bad for them to return quality. Otherwise, they will go out of business.
@final_fall
@final_fall 9 месяцев назад
Yeah. I haven't had any issues with the rubber parts on the stock and the forearm. Just the cheek pad. But other than the cosmetics it's been really good.

@final_fall
@final_fall 7 месяцев назад
Yeah. That really irritates me. I love the look of the gold trigger. Not that it makes a difference or anything but it's annoying the gold just wears off.
@kevinpidone807
@kevinpidone807 7 месяцев назад
I'll say this, the gold eventually wears off the trigger on all Brownings, just like bluing wears on other guns where you handle it the most.@@final_fall

That's a good point. Might take that trigger out and cerakote it in gold maybe. Who knows.

I don’t like it as much as the original Maxus. The speed lock forend is what made it the Maxus. Over size exhaust ports is where the gun really shines. I bought mine in 2012 , I donno have rounds are though it. Allot. Never gave me an issue, ever. There is a little camo wearing off around the magazine feed because of the obvious. I also shoot the Beretta A350 extrema and I love them both. If I had to pick just one. It wouldn’t matter.
@final_fall
@final_fall 6 месяцев назад
I have a buddy that owns the original maxus. He really likes the gun. I am definitely more partial to the magazine cap myself. And I really like the stock and how it is adjustable. I don't need it cut shorter, but having that straight section I think looks really unique. I also like the rubber over molding. I like it so much that when I look at potentially getting other gun models it disappoints me that most other models don't have the rubber. It's just a solid solid gun.
@TheHeron001

So overall, would you say the maxus is worth the price difference between it and the SX4?
@final_fall
@final_fall 19 дней назад
There are some things that definitely make it better than the sx4. Have the ability to use shims is a big one. The quick load feature, and the crisp trigger pull. Having both, I would say it's worth it. But if you don't have the budget for the maxis II, then the sx4 is a great alternative

No I didn’t , I had some jamming issues , Finish issues , and after the inlays started to peel I sold the gun at a huge loss. I’m still a Browning fan just not a Maxus ll fan.

Hi there. The failure on the finish is it only on this finish or on all the types of finish the Maxus can be delivered?

Thanks for that confirmation. It's either they use the spray on paint cerakote that doesn't need to be heat baked, or they do it incorrectly. I think it's probably the first one.

I've also had my Maxus 2 for two years now and have the same issue with the cheek pad bubbling up when it's wet. It does go away when the gun dries out, but for how long the pad will last doing this is up in the air. My only other gripe would be the rubber grips on the forend. Two of the grips have started to peel off at the corners and I've repeatedly had to re-adhere them. If anyone knows of a better waterproof rubber adhesive than contact cement please let me know.
@final_fall
@final_fall 7 месяцев назад
I haven't had the same issues with my fore grip rubber yet but the edges are just barely starting to peel back. But not enough that I have had to glue them back on. You could try something like shoe goo to glue it on. But idk if that would work better then contact cement. And I know that cheek pad is gonna wear out. It's already starting to wear out. And browning hasn't put the maxus 2 parts on their site yet so you can't order that part unless you call them. Last time I talked to them on the phone the guy told me I would have to buy the entire butt stock. Which is bogus because that cheek pad comes out. So eventually I'll just replace it. Thanks for the comment man!
@kevinpidone807
@kevinpidone807 7 месяцев назад
No worries! Yeah, the peeling of the foreend grips isn't a huge deal, but it's been bad enough I wouldn't want to leave them the way they were. Plus it just annoys me, like a scab you constantly pick at. There are some other adhesives I may try because I know I'm going to have another opportunity to do it again. I wondered if the cheek pad was replaceable... I'm assuming you have to remove the stock to do it? I know the cheek pads on the SBE's are replaceable, but I thought the Maxus cheek pads were fixed.@@final_fall
@final_fall
@final_fall 7 месяцев назад
@kevinpidone807 oh yeah,no they aren't fixed. I have pulled mine off a few times. They are removable. Basically the top bolt that holds the butt pad on is the same bolt that holds on the cheek pad. Just gotta get them to send that specific part and not the entire butt stock.
@kevinpidone807
@kevinpidone807 7 месяцев назад
Browning needs to step up on that one and offer a replacement cheek pad only. What a waste to throw out an entire stock just for a faulty cheek pad. I just removed mine tonight...so easy! Thanks for the tip!@@final_fall
@final_fall
@final_fall 7 месяцев назад
Hey no problem at all. I agree that they should offer to fix it. But I have a feeling that would never happen. Browning's warranty states if you your gun breaks in half, you get to keep BOTH HALVES!!! But seriously, With their non existent warranty program I think we are out of luck.

Anyone that tells you a gun never jams is either lying, or they never shoot it. Can I say it's never jammed? No. It has. But it's always been some extenuating circumstance. Not because the gun has issues jamming. It fires every shot 99.5% of the time

@final_fall
@final_fall 3 месяца назад
I also love wood and bluing, but I have seen wood warp in the more harsh conditions and the wet of waterfowl hunting. So it's not the ideal material. The paint may come off the plastic, but it isn't as susceptible to structural damage like wood can be unfortunately.

cerakote is kinda garbage and doesn't live up to the hype. I have a maxus 2 in black and got a fynelab industrial ceramic coat. It is literally an indestructible finish only as grinder would take it off. does add a little gloss though.
