I just want to say, don't let this scare you! I have to disagree with most things said. I scraped a B at GCSE chemistry , even getting a D in the c3 part of triple science. However once I started a level chemistry things just clicked and have found it to be one of my better subjects (I also do biology and psychology). My friend who got an A* in GCSE chemistry was told to drop AS chemistry after doing it 6 months as she was getting Us and making no progress. I have worked harder but not a great deal more and have found myself not to get anything lower than a C. Chemistry is a great subject that provides you with many skills and I would recommend it to anyone. I would just say give it ago if you've picked it, you might find it difficult at first but in a few months time you might end up loving it just like I do.

I agree with your point that A Level Chemistry is challenging and a big step up from GCSE, but it's important not to dissuade people from still taking it. Like you said, online resources are super helpful (I personally used Doc Brown) & it may just take more time and effort to learn it, but it's still worth doing. I study Medical Sciences at university and taking A Level Chemistry was so useful for my Biochemistry module!

the feelings of the specification not matching the tests is so relatable imo my advice is to do all past papers even the old spec because about 80% of it is the same as the new one (i'm an old-spec student who was in a class of students doing the new a-levels due to bad health throughout my college years, and i noticed my teacher still used a lot of the same powerpoints with most the topics, same teaching, same homeworks set, this was for both chemistry and biology), also print off the specification too and tick off as you make notes of them and that way you will recognise exactly what your board will ask questions about, c':

As someone who has just finished the two years of A level chemistry, it is bloody difficult! No matter how much time I inject into it (I revise chem twice as much as my other subjects and still don't get the same standard of grades), I don't seem to get much better at it. I got an A* at GCSE and I've struggled with chem to get my A for vet school, also to note that A2 is another huge jump from AS. Keep going with it Jade! You'll make it, you've just got to work so freaking hard!!!! xx

You need to remember this is one persons experience i just did the edexcel chemistry alevel and it was hard but all subjects are. Most of the AS topics have overlap with GCSE (triple ) and build on them if you make sure ur keeping up with the work it isnt impossible. I personally found that the jump between GCSE to AS was similar to most subjects and if you are keeping up with the lessons yo wont fall behind.

Because I'm a mature non-traditional student, I took my A level exams privately as an external student. I spent 12 weeks studying for A level chemistry (CIE exam board) while having a full-time job and took all of the 5 exams during the October/November 2017 exam period. I have to say that Chemistry is a very challenging subject and it takes a hell of a lot of dedication to get a good grade. I came out of my chemistry exams feeling "ok" but I cant say for sure whether I got an A or not. The AS part of it went pretty well, but I messed up a little on one of the A2 exams because I ran out of time. I had a nightmare in which I got a B so it is probably indicative of me having to re-sit the A2 exams in May/June 2018.

I think a lot of people forget that GCSEs aren't meant to be that difficult, they are GENERAL certificates of secondary education, so being able to do well at GCSE doesn't necessarily mean you have the capability to do the subject at A level. However chemistry is an excellent A level and if you do work hard you can do well, it's not impossible , you just have to get your mind to work a certain way, a large amount of the work is extrapolating information from each question so there is a certain level of analytical thinking required.
@CharlotteMulcahy
@CharlotteMulcahy 7 лет назад
The hardest part of a level chemistry is 100% the levelled 6 mark questions (and paper 3 in general) and it doesn't seem like teachers really know how to teach any of this stuff. AQA Chem also assumes you know so much stuff that isn't in the book?? like it's apparently general knowledge??

OH and if your chemistry is ocr a...definitely dont do unless necessary. i highly recommend geography due to low grade boundaries and a of of the knowledge comes from gcse

I'm literally in a different country, and have just finished an entirely different education system. This could not be less relevant to my life. Am I going to watch the whole thing? Hell yes. HSC (Sydney, Australia final exams) Chemistry made me cry pretty much on a daily basis. So sounds pretty similar to A levels!

I do edexcel chem and as an international A level chemistry student, I know that it is hard! But guys, it's not something impossible to do 💛 I know they ask a lot of questions about unknown compounds like X and stuff but it's all familiar with the stuff you've learned about, you just need to relate to it and understand the question first. Please start solving (past papers, worksheet, questions at the end of each chapter) from the very beginning of the year, after every chapters 🙏 Solving is the key, trust me!!💛💛 The more questions you solve, the more it clicks. Here's a tip for organic chemistry, first make sure you are very cleared about the naming part, the general formula, the skeletal formulae (it's a must) and of course then move to give the mechanism and the reactions. But questions about organic chemistry is always a mix up, know one thing that the examiners would never ever put something completely out of topic in the question, for example if there is a compound X unknown, there will always be a hint, there can be a molecular formula or skeletal formula or something else given, for example:- if it's C4H8 you know it's an alkene and the mechanisms that are possible for it and the outcome of products If it's C4H10, It's an alkane. The most important thing is to read the question carefully and to be able to understand it and then answering it.

The thing about chemistry at A Level is that you learn a lot of new things in the first year which can be very daunting and difficult. In the 2nd year, once year 1 work has had a while to sink in, it gets a bit better. You are building on topics and there is less completely new work. It's still really difficult. By the time you come to revise it all together, you start linking things together. Also, a lot of the questions are the same and once you've done enough practice papers, it makes it a loooot easier to get better marks.

PLEASE take this advice: don't take chemistry unless you absolutely HAVE to for your uni course or love it. Just don't waste your time if it's not needed. Do something you know you can do well in and get a really good grade because most unis just want you to get the grade they don't care what it's in.

hi jade, i have a question that i thought you may be able to help me out with. so i live in australia, and i'm in a program at my school where i do year eleven and twelve subjects over three years instead of two years like normal students (it's an advanced learning program). basically, this year (australian school years run from february-november/december) im doing all year eleven subjects and next year i'll be doing a combination of both year eleven and twelve subjects. stupidly, i decided to not do year eleven chemistry or biology this year, and to do it next year, so next year i will have gone an entire year without having studied it for an entire year (i studied it last year). do you think i'll be ok picking it back up again? i hope to get into medicine/medical science though there are many career paths that sound interesting to me. i'd love your advice! btw i love your videos xx

Ah wow, that's such an interesting system compared to ours! Hmm, I definitely understand your predicament. I'm sat here this summer holidays feeling like I've literally forgotten all science knowledge (and it's only been a month or so!). However, today I had a look at some old biology work and found that with a bit of time, it came back eventually. i truly believe that you will be okay, more than you probably imagine 💛 I bet you're in the advanced programme for a reason my friend, and with hard work I'm certain you can get medical science if it's what you eventually choose! Good luck and lots of loveee x

I've just finished year 13 and also did AQA Chemistry. I got an A* so it is manageable but I agree it was my hardest subject! The new specification is much harder than the old AQA one, especially the massive increase in long maths questions, so I was worried what grade I would get, but just keep going and make sure you know your practicals and graphs, if I can get an A*, so can you! (And yes multiple choice was a bitch!!!!)

A-level chemistry really isn't that bad, provided you know all the basics like the back of your hand and you keep up with all the new concepts you learn, since they all build on each other. I think your advice about making revision page with the molecular ions and charges is really good, especially once you get to A2 inorganic where you've got loads of transition metal ions, colours and complex ions (where small molecules called ligands arrange themselves around a central ion) to learn. Mechanisms aren't all that bad: a rule of thumb is that regions of high electron density (eg lone pairs, double bonds etc..) attack regions of low electron density (carbons bonded to a more electronegative atom, positive ions etc...), and that can generally be applied: I myself tend to work out all the mechanisms in the exam (names included, all you need is electrophile/nucleophile and a look at carbon framework before and after), though that is time consuming and leaves little time for checking! Either way, a very good video for prospective A-level chemists (though I believe you exaggerate the difficulty a little; but that might just be me loving the subject), and good luck with your results!

I take chem i i have to say, i disagree with alot of things said. Although chemistry is a hard subjects, its not that much harder than other a levels. Although its obviously going to vary person to person, i find chemistry okay. Before starting a levels i thought it would be so hard because of what everyone was saying but honestly its the same difficulty as other subjects- infact id probably find other subjects such as psychology or english harder. So althought its not going to be as easy as gcses dont think that its going to be anything undoable

I need a bit of help guysss... I don’t know what I want to do for A-levels, and I’m torn between careers as well. My biggest dream is to be in a Broadway musical (I’m a grade 8 singer) but because that is sort of unrealistic, I don’t think I’ll be doing any music / drama courses :/ I’ve also always wanted to be a vet, so that’s why I came here. Chemistry is necessary but apparently it’s so hard. I really don’t enjoy it at GCSE (triple science) and I’m only predicted a 6/7. My maths isn’t great either, I’m only predicted a 6. I’m going to do Pyschology and Biology for 2 of my A-levels. Biology is good for me, I am predicted an 8 (same goes for psychology) and I do enjoy it. And midwifery also really interests me as a career. I’ve heard that chemistry is the hardest A-level to exist!! I don’t know if I should force myself through the pain of chemistry and be a vet, or just pick something like music that I love but I doubt will get me anywhere... Help!!

literally what the hell. so many new sixth formers who have come into my school said they’ve been worried about a level chem because of this video. yes, it’s a step up from gcse chem. but so are *all a levels*. just because you found it hard doesn’t mean it’s going to be a universal massive step up for everyone. also, ur a studytuber - people look to you for advice. saying that if you’re not brilliant at gcse chem means you shouldn’t do it for a level bc you will fail is complete bs. I was mediocre at gcse and now chem is one of my favourite subjects I enjoy it so much and I managed to maintain a 90% average in all of my internal tests in the subject last year.
