Apologies if anyone's mentioned this already: she's calling herself Maria because that's her baptismal name. But there might be a Korean verb that sounds similar, in which case it would be smart wordplay.

Your interpretation of the "dance break", I will call it that, makes a lot of sense. In the M/V we see two Hwasas, one with red hair and one with black hair. There are various references to an Italian movie called Malena (if I'm not mistaken), in this movie a woman with red hair lives in a small village without a partner and she is considered the most beautiful woman, making men lust for her and the rest of the village women hate her. The cigarette scene is also a reference to the movie, where Malene had a bunch of men offering her a lighter. We can see Hwasa being more free and daring when she has red hair. For me, red-haired Hwasa is who she is today, a woman who is proud of herself and decided to not gather to societies norms, even if she gets hate, and even if it hurts, she won't let herself suffer because of it. And black haired Hwasa is who she was when the hate, press, negative attention and failure left her in a dark place. In the lyrics she says to herself "Don't struggle, you are already beautiful" and I think that realizing that was what made her confident and express herself more comfortably.

Aaron I hope u read this but MARIA actually her catholic baptis name. So this song is to encourage herself because since her debut she got many hates because they way she looks the way she acts. Even mamamoo also got many hate that's why they really close together and their fans called momoo always there to support and protect them. For ur information, even thought mamamoo is a girlband, but majority of their fans are female. Because they bring many issues of feminism and woman empowerment when this topic is really taboo in south korea.
