Solid review, I have had the same model for about a year now. You showed features that I never thought to use. It also has a "car" mode that I use when I'm on home time. Keep cranking them vids out, doing a damn good job.
I just picked up this same model Garmin last week for an excellent price. Money well spent, user friendly, simple, alot of good features. Great video spot on. The dash cam included, excellent quality. I'm glad I finally bought this model, I also researched a couple before settling with this model.
How is it doing so far? Any issues. I have just ordered it on eBay after many many days of comparing it to other branded sat navs. Though it has mix reviews but more positive than negative.
I'm picking one of these in a couple days, for our rv travels. I'm from Iowa and know towns are mostly all 20minutes apart. Corn, beans and livestock in between! Great review
Great review! I'm going to get this unit. I am tired of my Rand McNally falling off the mount and the power cords going bad after a year. It looks like a solid unit too. Thank you
Rand mcnally has fixed its cord and magnetic problem, but still have issues with the app stop working and sometimes skips your current destination if you have multiple stops. Still alot issues
I have this unit... I drive in California and drive a K T-680... I can't get it to keep a GPS signal to save my life... And now my company supplied Dēzl 500 won't hold a signal either... IDK if it's a Garmin problem or if somehow kenworth's frame somehow interferes with the GPS signal.
I like this one even better than the newest one they just came out with. This ones rugged design in my opinion makes it a lot more desirable for truck drivers.
I’m new class 2 truck driver (from next week) soon I will add Category E to my license in UK after your to long review 😆😆😆 I decided to buy same one 🙂👍 Thanks bro:)
I’m almost finished with training and should be starting with a co-driver next week. Seriously considering picking this unit up. Thanks for the review!
I couldn’t recommend it enough. It has its flaws as all technology does. But it seems to have less bugs than the competition in my opinion. It hasn’t ever really let me down.
Thank you Thank you I no nothing about a computer and I did no no my Garmin would do all the things you have explained and you explained it in a easy way Thank you Donna
Thanks for the in depth review. I'm trying to figure out what GPS I want to pick up after selling mine to some guy at a truck stop that was having a panic attack because his died.
Tell me about it lol. Man I used to have to guess all over the place because my truck at Millis capped at 66mph. Finding that nugget really helped my route planning a lot.
Love my Garmin 780. I've had it over a year and have yet to have the first glitch. The only issue that I have is that I wish it would show all truckstops, not just the large chains.
My Garmin is an older 570LMT and it’s spot on. Puts my Rand McNally to shame. Very disappointed in the rand McNally. Had high hopes for it Any one wish to buy my rand McNally? TND Tablet?
I'm currently running an old TomTom Trucker 6000. It's ok, it works, but it's slow to react to inputs. What I LOVE about this Garmin is the speed that the interface works at! Hmmmm, thinking now ..... :)
Yes I have a rand mc nally and the magnet issue is a problem. Having a good magnet for truck gps is good especially with some of these horrible roads we come across
Do you save your routes before you go to a delivery? I have a way that I like to go and want to save it somehow before I go. Any help would be great thanks
Hey Jack! Thanks for watching. A “hidden” feature in the software that nobody really uses is the “Trip Planner” app that you can find when you hit the “ Where to” on the Home Screen. You will find it listed somewhere around recents, saved, address etc. With that you can plan A to B points on specific trips and edit how you want that route to run. It takes some playing with to get used to it but I had an entire 5 day week set up including my favorite places to park and fuel when I ran my north east dedicated run a couple years ago. You can make the trips accordingly so all you have to do once you’ve done the work of programming it is select it from the list and drive on driver.
Is it pretty much plug and play right out of the box without a phone connection and updating just using Wi-Fi ? Can it still be used without having to connect it to the app ? What about connecting earbuds and shokz opencomm and stuff , will it connect on it’s own or will it need the gear in app to connect ? Appreciate the video and thanks for your info, have a great day.
I have the garmin 785 with an integrated dashcam into the unit but I also have the RM T85 an the (T) is for Tablet, torn between the two, which one is better????
Does your unit have voice command phone dialling? I bought a 780 in the UK when it came out and this feature, despite having been in the 770 (their previous 7in truck sat-nav), was mysteriously missing and enquiries to Garmin revealed that it had been removed intentionally. I sent it back and bought a 580 which still has this feature. I believe that it was somehow not compatible with their new Android operating system base which isn't on the 580. The Amazon listing for this unit still claims it has voice dialling though.
u should not have to edit your route for a detour(if there is an incident) this is the purpose of the traffic function(when it works) also what I have found is if/when you do a detour it will USUALLY take you on roads/streets that are not meant for trucks, so be careful especially when dark, TRUST ME!!! it WILL make you mad and wanna throw it out the window at times..... good review
I have the 580 and a otr 700 ... Both are good but the otr700 is better and has a faster processor because it is newer. The 580 is the same as the 780 just smaller, otr700 was on sale at Amazon for 299 , the only difference besides speed I can tell between the 580 and the otr700 is the popular truck route feature which is cool when you get off the highway. If the price is similar go with the otr series now since it is 2022 .. Good review
Great review, thanks. Wondering how you get the cool blue backgrounds on the dashboard and other screens? I see that there are day and night options and theme settings, but can't seem to find the blue backgrounds anywhere. Help please.
@@777FLYER Ok I think what you are seeing is the night view as you mentioned. It’s not really blue on the dashboard areas. Like the area where I am pointing out the mph on the bottom left that is gray but the video does look blue. Is that the blue you are talking about. That’s all I saw blue at the time stamp you mentioned.
You are right, must be the night views I’m seeing there. Thanks. Love the diversity of your topics, so many interesting videos. Keep up the good work, and stay safe.
Does anyone know what kind of sd card this thing takes? Had mine for a while now and turns off every 30mins it seems like it needs an update but doesnt have enough space on it.
@@bigginztrucking4698 i also like the smart link app for finding places....type in address on google maps....share to gps it finds truck rout......faster i think than typing in address in garmin if you havent tried this feature. That and map editing are great features among many on this gps.
How did you register it though I also just got the Dezlcam 785 but have no computer to register the device also what app do you use instead of the app preferred by Garmin the link app?
So does this thing I didn't see it on here maybe I missed it live traffic updates to reroute you automatically if there's a traffic jam or offer you a different route like Google maps does?
Jason I have been told by other drivers that it will do that. I personally do not use that feature at all so I am not 100% on it but pretty sure it does.
Iv'e had mine for over a year. I like it. Pretty reliable. I like the app. I have Android though. Voice recognition is kinda lame. Of course it's pretty noisy inside the rig.
Anybody know if you can use a power cable from a different garmin that has the traffic type cable so that you don't have to use the app to get traffic updates? I would think it would work....
I have to disagree with you on the updates. Rand McNally does have Wi-Fi updating because I have a TND 730 and a 740 & I use the hot spot from my phone to update it. I agree with you about the weak magnet and the mediocre design.
It’s a Scosche Magnet Mount and I love it. SCOSCHE MMWSM-XCES0 MagicMount Select Magnetic Suction Cup Mount Holder for Mobile Devices, Black www.amazon.com/dp/B07V8LCNNK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_c7ZpEbBCDMS1Z
I like your vidio do you have to pay each month for the trucking directions on this Garmin I have this Garmin but the app is asking for money each month?Thank you Donna
No you do not have to pay for your maps. Nor do you have to pay for the turn by turn directions. The app I believe is asking you to pay for live traffic and weather updates that would be displayed on the Garmin unit. That is not something I use so I am not very well versed in it.
There is a micro USB port on the side that seemingly can be used to charge it, when I plugged into it to test it to answer your question it did indicate that it was in fact charging. As far as inputing the route, Garmin makes it very easy, on the Home Screen select the “Where to” tab and then select address. It’s that easy.
@@bigginztrucking4698 OK thank you for getting back to me. And I did watch your whole video it was very helpful. I think that's the GPS that I will buy. long as I can plug the charge cord into the side of it and operate it without using the mag Mount because I have my own that I like.
When you put in your route , it should ask you do you want to take the route with or without tolls it’s yes or no , if the route doesn’t have tolls it won’t pop up and ask you only routes with tolls
I would say the 780. Performance is the same but depending on the location of your GPS it could be more difficult to see on the 5” model (580). I’d say the 7” (780) is the best way to go. However, there are some that say it takes up too much room compared to the 580. I disagree.
I have both. The Garmin and rand McNally. Garmin is far more accurate and trustworthy to me. The rand McNally looses its bearing a lot. Thinks it’s on a side road. Some features are better. I like entering the city first rather than street number, but small issue. The Garmin is hands down better. Oh. When I search on my Garmin. I select active route. Works great.
RailsToRoad does the TND 85 keep its location accurate? I’ve asked many people and no one says it does. The Garmin is spot on. That is why in my opinion the Garmin is better. I don’t need a gps that is recalculating as often as the rand McNally does.
Keith Robinson, it still skips to side roads from time to time. However, it is super fast at recalculating. Never had a situation where it was an issue.
Personally I have never used one however, I have heard from many drivers that the Tom Tom does not feel as though it was truly designed with truckers in mind as much as the Garmin and/or the Rand units. I have heard things such as the points of interests around truck stops and such places are not well provided. Also that there are many untrue “truck routes” compared to the Garmin and Rand units.
i don't know which Garmin to get. what gets you the most bang for your buck? i don't really need a 10'' screen but i want the one that has the most features to help me optimize my driving/stops. any advice will be helpful
In my opinion the new 700 seems like a decent value however it’s not rugged like the Dezl 780. I have had an issue here and there with my 780 losing satellite signal but not enough for me to change it out. I really like how rugged the 780 is because if I ever need to carry it in a bag or something like that I don’t have to really treat it like a tablet. The new ones seem to be built softer in my opinion.
I think the 780-785 is what im looking at. The 785 has the dash cam i think that's a big plus that means you won't need to buy one separately. Its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.
I have heard the 785 units glitch a lot. I wonder if it’s trying to do too much being a GPS and a camera? Either way you should be able to find a deal on both of them.
I meant that they should be cheaper now that the newer model is out. However I haven’t checked the pricing lately. If they aren’t less expensive then there might be something to their build quality keeping the price up.
I have heard from many drivers that have used both, the Garmin routing system is better. However I cannot speak personally about it because I have only used the Garmin.
A lot better and no issues as bugs .rm has quility control probs ..last rm gps I bought new had battery issues not keeping charge or wood shutoff for no reason n glitches only lasted 5 months B4 I switched to Garmin otr710
Thank you sir. The 785 is riddled with glitches, especially surrounding the camera software. Plus it’s a fixed camera so you would have to have your GPS mounted perfectly to get a decent shot. Ironically enough Garmin makes a fantastic dash cam (Garmin 55 or 65W) that seems to get the job done quite well. The 770 and 780 in my opinion is “ol faithful”.
Very little in my opinion. Possibly some internal specs that I don’t bother with. But the main difference is the 780 has a magnetic base and the 770 has a regular ball joint style base. I love anything that will hold with a magnet so it was a no brainer for me. But, during training we used the 770 and it worked pretty much exactly as the 780. The 780 can also access weather and traffic if you are subscribed with the app and I don’t think the 770 can do that.
I would blame that on spell check. I didn’t check my spelling. Thank you for a great review and a quick response. Trying to make sure before I drop that much money.
@@cycruttenden1719 That’s understandable, it is a lot for a GPS. But I can tell you I’ve used mine every single mile I have been a truck driver and I feel it has been money very well spent. As long as you get a decent unit that logic applies to whatever brand you decide.
Avoid ANY Rand McNally GPS's (I had the Over Dryver 7). 1) They are unreliable in navigation 2) Post false restrictions on a TON of routes when route planning 3) Most times the GPS will lose signal on wide open highways/roads and in many cases I had to solve that by turning the gps off then on again 4) You can pluck the GPS off the magnet mount 5) Not so sturdy and can damage it easy if the mount keeps failing P.S.: don't let the addition of Sirius XM rope you into buying the Rand McNally. Because if your housing mount breaks, you will no longer be able to connect to your XM radio feature. Heard the Garmin and TomTom's are the best GPS's to stick with.
Excellent breakdown of your experience. I personally have not used any of the RM products so I try to limit my criticism overall. I am still using the Dezl780 and have only had a few issues that software updates seem to have overcame.
@@bigginztrucking4698 Awesome breakdown on the video, driver! I don't understand the people who are over hyping the RM brand (probably new owners) but my Rand McNally I had for close to two years, somehow. I had to hold the GPS to the mount with mini bungies and the worst is if you aren't paying attention the GPS freezes a lot. So 15 miles/50 miles/130 miles down the road and the screen is locked up, your turn-off is ahead... you're screwed. Never again will I buy Rand McNally ANYTHING.
Just purchased one 2 weeks ago. I don’t know if it is just me but it won’t pick almost 25 percent of the addresses I punch in . Please help me out if someone faced the same problem
Plug your addresses into Google Earth. Zoom in on the address. Find the truck entrance. Place a pushpin in the truck entrance. Right click the pushpin and select properties from the context menu. Then input the GPS coordinates into your Garmin. Your Garmin will then route and guide you directly to that truck entrance. Personally, I never enter addresses. I always enter GPS coordinates as I just explained above because it is always 100 percent accurate. Good luck.
LOL you said voice command and Karen said "How can I help you Mr BT?" the Mrs thought that was hilarious. Traffic is free btw just have to use the phone app. You pay for weather and access to view traffic cams if you choose.
I’ve used both Garmin 780 and Rand Mcnelly 750 but for me I like the Rand Mcnelly 750 more because it telling me everything with the voice ahead specifically down steep ahead
You are correct on all counts. That was a recommendation I got from long time Garmin users. Putting the true length seems to confuse the unit sometimes and it will send you around routes that you actually could have taken. Of course with the Garmin being one of many tools for route planning I have found this to be helpful along the way. However, I did not mention it in the video because results may vary.
Yea it seems to work for me. Of course as I said in conjunction with other routing tools. Usually in the areas I drive the only true “over length” issues have been very winding mountain roads that have about 11 signs before you get to it saying what lengths are allowed on that road.
Maybe I’m an Idiot but this GPS Sucks. It’s taking me through Towns and Cities and all 2 lane roads. Where is the option to select “Freeways” only. My Rand McNally had that option. I’ve had it 3 days and it has provided me no help. I’m going to return it.
Yes it can. There is an Ifta tracking program built in. I do not use it but I have looked at it and it seems pretty easy to use. You can view various quarters or the entire year. And it seems to keep track of how many miles were spent on toll roads as well but I am unsure of how accurate that is.
I have always had the same thought. But I guess that’s less of an issue these days. Even cell phone manufacturers like Apple make magnetic chargers for their phones. I really don’t know when that pendulum swung to the other side really.
