I've just purchased a full cordless kit of makita tools. Mitre saw , circular saw, jigsaw, planer, combi drill and compact gun . Best money I've ever spent! They didn't have this nailer in stock but they ordered it in for me and im just going to collect it here now. Thanks for the great review 👍

I've had a ton of Makita stuff and I can assure you that the Made in Japan stuff is twice the tool of the Made in Elsewhere. Like the Bosch tools that are still made in Germany - there's still a few.
Definitely appreciate these sorts of video's more than the standard 20 min initial impression video you always see. We have couple unit apartment building and was really considering getting one of these. There always ends up being some small job or loose trim it would be great to be able to bring this thing in and secure a few pieces instead of lugging up a compressor for 8' of trim.
It is a heavy gun at first use , but after a few days I found the weight to my advantage. It’s totally different from a lighter weight gun (paslode hitachi etc etc ) . From what I can work out , it’s best to let the weight of the gun do the work . Just press an fire and it ends up less action than throwing a lighter weight gun around .. Its a good nailer . Fires into hardwood easier than any gun I have encountered.. Took a few days to get used too but I love it now ..takes a C brad up to 65mm .Definitely wear ear muffs . Mine came in a big box that I can now put the planer in as well....$575 AUD...price didn’t include battery
Yes. You are right in all your points. Great feedback! The weight is definitely it’s hidden advantage. It packs a strong plunge of the nail every time.

I just got this and it’s only driving the nails about 90% of the time, it will drive fine for a number of nails and then 4 or 5 only drive in half way, then back to fine. When it wont properly drive it makes a softer sound.
The origin of Makita tools was and is subject to a lot of legends. In fact, it actually doesn't matter where it was built I think. I own a lot of Makita products from all over the world, EU territory, China, Japan. I've never had one let me down. There was one recip saw I sent back, that was built in China, but the only reason was that the rubber shoe at the front was very loose and at that time I didn't know that this was supposed to be that way becaus this is a user replaceable part an no overmolding. I reordered and by chance got one made in the EU that had tighter tollerances. But I actually thing that this was completely random and it was a completely non critical point. I reckon they don't have very tight tolerances on those rubber shoes. I might be wrong of course, but I have a drill and a sander made in china, an infaltor too, they are impeccable concerning build quality. What is correct is, that there are tools specificly made for the japanese market, and those indeed are better in terms of components and construction. Japanese construction sites have super strict regulations concerning noise, vibration etc, they literally work with a publicly visible dB meter above them. I never thought that a construction site could be that quiet. That's why they need the best tools they can get and Makita is delivering them. That said, I highly sympathize with a tool made in the EU (they even develop and build tools in Germany) or Japan and I think it's awsome that Makita does this. This is where the fact, that Makita is an independent company and not just a brand like Porter Cable, Milwaukee or DeWalt, really shows. In any case, thanks for this thorough review, seems to be a nice nailer! A set of proper work gloves will make holding it a lot nicer I think :)
Really? Cos I've had over 20 makita tools and half of them have had to go back for repair. Especially drills. My skill saw has now started playing up 2 months out of warrenty. Thinking of making the move to dewalt or milwaukee soon and the nail gun might be the thing that clenches the deal as I have not heard many good things about this gun.
I have this gun and have used it for three years. It’s a love / hate relationship. When it works I love it. But 40% of the time it misfires with no nail, plunger sticks out will not retract. 2” nails are the longest I’ve been able to drive- no way in hell will it fully drive a 2-1/2” nail unless it’s in drywall and insulation- missing any wood. BUT, when it works I absolutely love it. It will chew your thumb up though!!
I do have one. For a period of time worked fine. Now it does not shoot right. Probably the hammer pin is used up, and it jams the nails. Othervise, very good tool.
Yeh I got one and the multi fire is already faulty after about 5/10 uses. Also it can’t fire pins in fully when doing spindles cause it can’t get the angle :/
For small trim stuff, I also love it and have had no problems. Today, I wanted to use it to "Tack" 2 - 2x4's together before I would secure them with screws. Using the 2 - 1/2" nails and 9 times out of 10 not only would the not counter sink home... they wouldn't drive far enough to hold the 2 pieces together. And YES, I am holding the gun firmly and applying lots of pressure. It still pushes the gun off the nail. Have you ever had that experience? Am I asking it to do something beyond its working range? Thanks for any advice!
Mine constantly jams, the nails overlap each other in the magazine I have no idea why? Any help would be great. I have been using 50mm nails someone told me to use nothing over 25mm?
@@Archifx won't work when nailing heads of door stop, lost power, misfires, won't send pins home, only fires pointing down,so won't do arcs skirt. I did a lot of 2nd fixing guess it is not man enough, and not as easy to maintain as a paslode gas gun
Sadly I’ve used mine for 5 days and it’s already knackered the firing mechanism is faulty (only ever used makita nails It was working great when I was using 50mm nails then I switched to 38mm then the trouble started miss firing at first (a lot) then the mechanism started to rewind slower then flashing light indicating jam when there wasn’t and to reset it I’d have to disconnect the battery and go again It got to point I’ve sent it back I paid £370 from amazon (Not cheap for something to break In 5 days of general diy
I know that using a bostich, drive the nail too deep or not deep enough, jammed, misfires a lot. My senco is a workhorse is magnesium is pro grade, very lightweight 3 lbs, Need a cordless for climbing up and down ladders.. Considering milwaukee fuel vrs senco fusion, or makita.
I am a novice. I am looking to build an out door fence with redwood, and replace a lot of redwood batten on the exterior of the house. Is this nailer the rector one to purchase or is the 18 g finish nailer the better option? BTW i do not do finish wor. I leave that to contractors
I bought this gun went to use it for first time on the fully charged 5 ah battery and it did not fire in one single nail 🤦. I had to hammer in the other half of the nail every time. Really poor performance. I used it on 12mm MDF with 32mm nails shooting into American poplar. Like every tenth nail went in all the way. Really bad.
Idk man. You can compare any gun to a porter cable and it’s gonna come out on top 😂 I got a cordless ryobi 16 gauge nailer that I’d sooner use than any porter cable pneumatic gun
I agree .. most reviews are pointless - with no value in a real world use. I don’t care how many nails per second I can fire, I don’t care how it works in super hard iron hard. I don’t care how it compares to every other brand. In the same way as I don’t buy a car based on how quick it goes. Or how it compares to a tractor.
Personal preference I didn’t rate it at all . It reminds me of the gen1 Milwaukee Brad nailer . Has no finesse for fixings mouldings . Needs a lot of pressure put on it to fire the nail flush .
I'm hesitant on buying this gun. My Makita 23g and 18g are both less than stellar setting nails on a 5.0 battery. I always buy named brand nails, typically Senco. Are there any comparisons to how the 16g fires vs 18 and 23? I love Makita and want to love their nailer but so far, they are not great.

Struggling to pick between makita or a milwaukee. I have a makita setup but lots of people tend to prefer the milwaukee. I've personally used the milwaukee and it's a badass tool and is about 7 pounds with battery. Any thoughts from anyone?

I am still looking for the best18V nailer for me... Most of my tools are Makita, so I have a lot of batteries and would like to stick to Makita. I don't want a pneumatic one. I noticed that Makita does not have a 15 gauge 18V nailer... That's too bad because a lot of reviews on 15/16/18 gauge tell me that 15 gauge has the best holding power. I am not using the nailer for simple stuff like baseboards. I would like to use it for a wooden fence outdoor, finishing an outdoor wooden ceiling on the carport (so how are these 16 gauge nails doing on "hanging" jobs when the weight is fully on the nails?). So I guess the projects I want to do are even a bit more heavy for a nailer than your project in the video. Can you say anything about the jobs I want to do? Can you say anything about this nailer compared to 15 gauge, especially when it comes to holding power? I am now using an older model Senco cordless finish 41 which is 15 gauge (whith diagonal nail magazine) but it's not mine and I finally want to get my own nailer instead of asking a friend all the time... the 40V version its better than Porter Cable, I had used both already. You can go to a roof without compressor, hose, no visit to store to get oil to compressor, argh, with time I get a profound hate to compressor. The 18V it's ok to small projects, the 40V it's FAST, good for professionals. Both are good products.
I have to add that this is a good nailer when it works but when it doesn't work it doesn't work makita doesn't do nail guns..... I have seen more than three of these nailers exactly epically fail maybe the new models have fixed that but in the last year's this is not a reliable nailer get metabo

Awesome video review, thanks for being so thorough. I already have a Makita cordless drill, so i think this is the one for me (compared to a cheaper Ryobi). Have you tried using this with a 3.0 battery? Is the 5.0 required?
Yea. It’s an expensive bit of kit but I swear it’s worth it. Don’t matter to me if it’s “brushless” the bastad sets a beautiful nail every tine. That’s what matters to me.
