Wonder no more - it was actually a somewhat shrill teenager (the iconic scream is him pitched down). Look up "Mortal Monday Commercial" on RU-vid and you can hear him scream the unedited version twice, followed by the iconic version that everyone knows (the commercial - not the movie - was actually its first appearance).

As a kid, I loved the first one. I even went to see the 2nd in theatre. Johnny Cage being killed 5 seconds into the second one set the tone...I knew right then I'd made a mistake.

Mortal Kombat 1 isn't winning any Oscars, but I'll be damned if it's not the most solid video game adaptation thus far, especially compared to the sequel. I love this film. I even have a soft spot for the 1994 Street Fighter film because it's cheesy fun and and award-winner compared to Legend of Chun-Li.

Agree. Wouldn't call it a great movie and have no idea how critics saw it or if it did good at the box office. But most people I know, even ones who didn't know the game, who saw it back when it came out liked it. The movie was pretty popular with the masses and along with Resident Evil probably the best video game movie so far. Yeah, the bar is set low and it has aged horribly, but the original in it's day was a solid popcorn movie.

That "Flawless victory" line from Shang Tsung always annoyed me. The one where Goro fights Art and, when Goro finishes him after Art has hit Goro loads of times, he says "Flawless victory." Hell no. Goro would have lost at least a quarter of his health bar.

To be fair the first MK was quite good. Had some definite cringe moments but all around it did what it should have done. The moment when Scorpion and Sub-Zero make their entrance is epic A.F. Plus Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was such a badass Shang Tsung that they used him when bringing the character back to MK11.

FFVII: Advent Children, FFXV: Kingsglaive, Tom Raider, Warcraft and Mass Effect: Paragon Lost are all well made video game movie adaptations. Mortal Kombat is actually quite far from that bar, but at the time, that bar was way lower and it rose far beyond it.

Man, the first movie was good back in the day. Watching it now it has aged like shit, but the first movie was loved and it was popular. I remember people dressing up like scorpion and the Mortal Kombat theme would play on the radio. Cool times.

I remember going to the movie with my dad and brother as a kid (or early teen i guess it was) and they both really liked it despite not knowing anything about the game. So I think it was a good movie for the time, has aged horribly but remember most people who saw it liked it back when it was on. The second was not good though.

My only problem with this video is that it acts like the two movies were on the same quality level when they are absolutely not. Neither may have had the gore of the games and the first one may have had a major camp factor but otherwise it was head and shoulders above the sequel in every way. The second movie shoehorned and name dropped so many characters, made their costumes look like cheap plastic, and topped it all off with the CG laugh-fest. The first one's cast may have been more limited as far as recognizable characters went, but they were at least done justice. They made Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile (after his transformation) all have the same basic look but still seem individual and dangerous. Even the fights looked far more legitimate than the CG and wire fests that plagued the second movie

Agree, first movie is still fun to watch - and I mean "fun" in a totally positive sense. Of course the CGI looks weak for today's standards, but all the rest - music, casting, most of the fighting scenes, epic one liners etc. - is just ON POINT.

The first Mortal Kombat movie is actually quite decent, sure it's cliched to Altworld and back. but it is actually a intentionally campy fun low budget film. The sequel is an abomination to cinema that only Uwe Boll would find enjoyable. I do agree that the first Mortal Kombat movie needed to be an "R" (US) or "15" (UK) certificated film with the gore attached. I am hopeing that the epic awsomeness and box office smash that was Deadpool gets people thinking that a re-boot Mortal Kombat film could work and please for the love of the elder-gods please get good people to make it, not cash grubbing idiots like they always do.

I saw the first movie again recently after many years and I think it still has charm. The effects might have aged a bit, but the movie does not rely on them that much. It still has cool visuals (camera, lighting and color filters), good atmosphere, solid casting and performances, and nice, old-school physical sets. Plus, the action scenes are well-done. I wouldn't say it's amazing and it's not a masterpiece, but it's still understandable why it was a hit back in the day. It's not laughable, or so archaic it looks unintentionally funny (like Kirk battling Gorn for example). It's a good, well-done movie.

Yeah I agree, the film has not aged well at all, but in it's time Mortal Kombat was a good movie and most who saw it liked it. Probably the most successful and well received video game movie along with Resident Evil considering the crap based on video games that everything else falls into. The Honest Trailer was hilarious, but the movie gets a worse rep than it deserves. It was a successful movie based on a video game, no matter how poorly it has aged that is not an easy task at all.

The first Mortal Kombat was dumb, but fun. It felt like a movie adaptation of the game(albeit with a PG-13 rating). I don't know what the hell happened with the sequel though. I'm still amazed they couldn't convince Christopher Lambert to return. This is the same dude who willingly did 2 more Highlander movies after the disastrous 2nd film.

Video game movies will pretty much suck for one simple reason: the interactivity is not there. What makes a game great? The fact that YOU control things. In a movie, you can't do that.

This... Annihilation was just straight-to-video garbage, but the first movie is easily one of the best video game adaptations out there (not saying much, I know). Aside from the missing gore it's actually very similar to the game, unlike just about every other video game movie, and they even had the balls to keep Liu Kang as the main character instead of replacing him with a white guy. Yes, it's cheesy, but so were the early Mortal Kombat games (TOASTY!). It did a lot right, which is probably why it still ranks among the most financially successful video game movies ever.

Yes, and still best video game adaptation to film to this day. 2021 Mortal Kombat was good but the whole Cole character and his story was very forced and didn’t flow well with the move. Also, Lamberts Raiden was more entertaining than 2021 Raiden. Last but not least, the 1995 MK soundtrack is a thousand times better than 2021 MK
