A lot of you have asked me to listen to #Yungblud, so of course I did. Here are my thoughts on this chap from Doncaster, his music, his style and his purpose! Obviously I'm basing this on the limited knowledge I have on him, but do let me know if you agree or disagree with any of my points!

I love how all the yungblud fans are taking this as a serious sincere critique of yungblud and his music, whereas everybody else can clearly see Justin is taking the piss in the most subtle way possible. Or is he? you decide.
@tigs6639
@tigs6639 2 года назад
I took it as both - a sincere critique, but also a bit tongue in cheek. If it was a criticism of Yungblud for sounding too much like other music, that would be a bit rich coming from Queen - sorry - The Darkness, oops!! 😛 (That was an example of a tongue in cheek joke - I love the Darkness and I love Justin's evident sense of humour💜)😎👍🏼👍🏼

Agreed. I’ve seen a few of these videos and I don’t see them as negative criticism much. He’s an analyst of “todays best music “ or whatever you wanna call it. It’s a good conversation for musicians to have with each other.

Agreed. It's a bit of both. After all, the Darkness were Steel Panther before Steel Panther existed. A parody band, but still with great music, nonetheless. They stab a genre right between the eyes while paying sincere tribute at the same time.

It is a serious critique. Justin has been pretty balanced, here. He said what he likes and why. He said that he doesn't think that it's a great song, but that the artist has potential. I don't get why people think that Justin isn't being anything other than genuine. He's a serious musician, himself, so he'd undermine his own credibility if he took the pee.

There's nothing wrong with something being simple, I think he's been around long enough to see that yungblud makes simple structured music, but it sounds like Justin respects that, like he said it encourages people to get in to music and start playing aswell as listening to other stuff! You have to start somewhere and it's people like yungblud that keep the cycle going!

Justin I know you’re doing just new stuff, but this video heavily referenced “Hedwig And The Angry Inch”. Have you ever considered digging in to a rock musical? I would love to hear your thoughts. There is a great film of the musical for reference. The film won best film that year at the Sundance Film Festival. The script was written by John Cameron Mitchell who starred in the role of Hedwig and directed the film; the music and lyrics are written by Stephen Trask who also leads the band (his band). I think at the time of the film it was his band Boys Against Girls.

@dannyplaysguitar I think once you’ve had a youngish artist like Ed Sheeran say the first guitar lick they learned to play was ‘’Get Your Hands Off My Woman Motherfkr” you have reached guitar legend status for sure. If you influence a new generation of musicians, the proof is in the pudding at that point. Also who else plays solos perched on a big dude’s shoulders walking around among the audience? There’s a live version of ‘Japanese Prisoner of Love’ that I can’t stop watching. The moment Justin and Dan just happen to start head banging in sync at the exact same moment is a magical thing. That live version also has the kind of Justin solos where he crouches down with his guitar vertical. I always love those solos. So YES! 🙌 I think Justin Hawkins is most definitely a guitar legend.

Too bad you don't know fuck all about how he actually worked his way from playing pubs and built a fan base, yes he did it quickly, but that is because his music resonated with a certain demographic of people who were not feeling spoken to by a lot of musicians. Late 2016, he's playing pubs, working his way up bills over time. Early 2017, he and his management company that he signed to released his debut single before signing a deal with a larger label to distribute his music. He does exactly what the fuck he wants and the management company deals with it. And he's grown still at a moderate clip, but he is still playing 2500 seaters after 5 years, that's not exactly what a marketing team would come up with... he would be playing much larger venues by now on his second album. Instead, he was playing tops, 800 seat venues at the END of his first album tour. The only reason he could jump into 2000-2500 seaters is because he couldn't tour for so long but could still do promo and build up steam during the pandemic and took the chance and worked hard to do so. So he came shooting out of the gate. I know that near where I am, he had canceled 2 shows at a 1500 seater and now is at the 2500 seater because his popularity increased over time. That's called hard work, not "designed". So kindly fuck right off.

His Dad and Granddad owned a very prestigious guitar shop called Musicground in Doncaster ...they ripped me off once ...i bought a Rickenbacker 330 off them 30 odd years ago cash and £ 100 off for a trade in on a very good condition vintage Hofner Committee!! (giving me only £100 for a historic collectable guitar was a rip off on its own !!!) and they told me it didnt have the official Rickenbacker case that it was sold with but told me to come back the next week to pick it up as it was "in storage " ...when i went back they basically fobbed me off with a generic cheapo case rather than the real rickenbacker case....i argued but kinda got the feeling that id probably spend every Saturday trekking into Doncaster for the next 9 months to argue about it and there was no way id be seeing the case any time soon and as a young guy didnt know my consumer rights back then ...so i reluctantly accepted this non brand massive crappy unfitted case that the guitar rattled around in.....When i sold the guitar years later i remember the guy i sold it to knocking me down by £90 off my asking price as it didn't have the correct case and case candy....i thought about Justin and Rick Harrison that day I'll tell you I saved 2 years for that guitar ...wish i still had it but the council tax bill had to be paid last year so.. ...i'll never be able to afford another ... Interestingly years later they were both involved and convicted of selling stolen guitars it made the newspapers ... I never shopped there again after my bad experience ...they were always a bit sniffy and ignorant service wise as they dealt with rich guys and rockstars not your average player and i only got the Rickenbacker 330 off them because it was the only place i could get one without travelling all the was to a big city .....That was the impression i got.....so fuck them and fuck his weird looking sons "too cool for school" posh rich kid music lol

I agree that I think you hear a lot more of the British punk influence in his early sound- the lyricism is really key on much of his first album's stuff. He did a live recording of his first album (Live in Atlanta) and I really love that album because you hear the early songs with more of the rock edge that he's developed into now. I think Yungblud is fascinating as an artist study because he had a very old school development. He wasn't popular with traditional labels and radio, he started very organically by playing small shows around Europe non-stop for nearly two years until he'd built a strong and dedicated following which then brought the attention of radio stations etc., I think that aspect of him also appeals to the more punk experience- the same with the rejection and judgement he faced early on, but especially the philosophy. I think Yungblud aims for a punk philosophy if not a truly punk sound. But your comment about the American influence was interesting because he works very closely with the same couple of people when writing and Yungblud admits he's a melody guy and gets an idea in his head but isn't great at working out the chords so he works a lot with Chris Greatti an American guitarist when developing his songs, so I wonder if that contributes a little. Also just a small fact check update- he came out as pansexual last year, further to that interview where he spoke about being sexually fluid but mostly straight. One of the great things about him is he is very open about how identity grows and evolves as you grow and he said stuff changed and he found that was the label he identified with. I agree that I think he's an important artist to have in the spotlight. I really admire that he has stated he loves music but his primary aim was always culture- to be some kind of artist that had an impact of culture and that is his motivating force. I appreciate your take on him.

I'd been turned off by the autotuned chart stuff of Yungblud, but one day found myself listening to Live In Atlanta and heard something I'd not heard in decades. A real energy, excitement and connection with the audience. I'm probably way to old to experience them live (40s) but it woke up something musically in me that had been missing.

No shame, no judgement, and Dom certainly doesn't care, he has said as much in interviews, that he appreciates anyone and everyone who wants to come out and be themselves at his shows. Music now is soo accessible compared to when Nickelback came out, so we had the likes of Kerrang and Scuzz on TV blaring the same songs over and over. Then the internet became quicker and then RU-vid/Spotify and the likes came along to give everyone access to every song ever released. From there, the only people that are over played to the point of creating a cringe effect, are artists that are radio friendly, but even then, the majority of people listen to what they want when they want it. As a fellow Norfolkian/East Anglican, I have always found Ed Sheeran to become the cringe of the nation by being a touch too radio friendly. Loved how The Darkness inspired us artists in East Anglia. Amazing to see that you are still about. Peace

I think he is heavily influenced by so much that has already been done. He has nothing original to show me. Even his moves and grimacing at the camera in 'Fleabag' is reminiscent of Keith Flint from Prodigy who had much more edge and seriousness. Speaking of seriousness, Yungblud kind of looks like his spoofing everything!!
@tigs6639
@tigs6639 2 года назад
I agree, he seems to be inspired by artists that came before him, I personally don't see that as a negative though, I like being able to see the same influences that I like showing in his work. I also don't think his persona is fake, I guess he's performing to the camera, but so was Ketih Flint when he performed too... All artists are, to some extent. It reminds me of Bowie, being able to play up to the character of Ziggy gave him an excuse for exuberance and to explore different sounds and styles. Not saying 'Yungblud' is an alterego in the same way the Ziggy was to Bowie, but you get what I mean? Most artists use their stage persona to exaggerate parts of themself that fit with the music. I'm sure he'll develop more with time. He seems really genuine to me. And I love that he has lots of different influences to his music, sometimes he raps, then he's got a raspy/grungy voice, then more chanting/stadium rock bits...I like all the different influences personally 😌
@tigs6639
@tigs6639 2 года назад
P.S. I much, much prefer watching videos of him live, then you really get to hear the quality of his voice. It annoys me when music is overproduced/heavily autotuned - you lose the energy and character of the voice. There's a BBC live lounge video where he mixes Amy winehouse with two other songs (YUNGBLUD: Señorita, back to black, goosebumps). It's worth a listen, stay to the end of it because the violins and drums really build up into a brilliant crescendo. Hope you don't mind me recommending it, maybe you won't like it, I just thought I'd mention it because it's a bit different? Hope you have a good day 😌

@@tigs6639 except that his studio stuff isn't autotuned heavily, that's basically how he sings live when he is not running the fuck all over the stage. He has his problematic areas but none of them are what people are slagging him off for here in the comments. When he performs in his "intimate" shows and it is him with his guitarist and drummer, and his guitar tech on bass, and even his photographer joins in on a couple of songs on guitar, it is the best of him. Especially since the bassist/guitar tech has known him since he was like 12, when he was the one who started working with him on songwriting, singing, and his guitar chops. Their voices sound the BEST together, and I kinda wish he would get another guitar tech and have Ben play bass and sing backups all the time because he has that talent right there. I am sure they have talked about it before, and Ben does play on some things like radio appearances and like when they did Mars for the Jimmy Kimmel show... who knows. I just know he doesn't deserve all of the shit he takes from people who have this expectation that he should fit in the box they have created in their mind for him.
@tigs6639
@tigs6639 2 года назад
@eboe, hello 😌 Yeah I didn't really mean Yunblud is overly autotuned, but you can hear a difference when he sings live, and I much much muchhhh prefer hearing his voice live. I have the same issues with a lot of music, when I see the music video and don't think it's amazing, but then you hear it live and it's a million times better. That's what I mean, but maybe it's personal preference. (Example, Miley Cyrus has been doing some amazing rock covers, but her officially released songs are always 'computer-fied' and it never sounds as good. Check out her cover of Doll Parts by Hole, Zombie by the Cranberries. Her deep husky voice is just perfect to me, but you never hear that on tracks she releases.) And did you listen to the song I recommended earlier, Live Lounge Yunglbud: back to black, señorita, goosebumps. ??? I really like it because it shows off Yungblud's voice and energy. As the song builds, the energy rises.....mmm I just love it!! I'm new to his music, but I love what I've heard so far. And from watching videos of him live, I clocked that him and the guitarists often look at eachother, and thought that's cool, they must have a proper bond. So thanks for telling me that they've actually been friends for years and part of the journey together, that's cool to know. Also, I agree that he doesn't need to fit into a certain genre. I love lots of different music, from hiphop, grunge, techno-trance, drum&abase, disco, soulful, rock, folk, pop-punk, emo, indie....I honestly don't fit into a particular genre - and I'm glad coz I get the best of all the music to enjoy! 😌 And I think you mentioned it in another comment, and I agree - the spirit of punk isn't to sound exactly the same as punk when it was originated. In fact, the most PUNK thing to do would be to ignore the rules of punk because it's for old fogies, and create something new 😛

Well, it's standard 4 chord pop song structure. Yungblud is as pop as it gets imo. I'm not sure if he's even an artist that writes their own stuff. Find his music boring. But I like him as a person when I've seen him interviewed. Seems down to earth.

He has writing credit on every song that he has released that isn't a direct cover. He's been writing music since his teens, like many of us have. He's got the skills to write songs. Does he have people he collaborates with regularly? Yes. Do other people when they are in a band? Also, yes, so why can't a "solo artist" who works with the same producers all the time collaborate with them for songwriting?

The thing that's always fascinated me, watching popular music ebb and flow (and evolve) over the years, is catching the obvious influence or recycled riff, and seeing where the musician runs with it. Honestly, this song musically doesn't do much for me...lyrically I appreciate the raw emotion and he, for sure, has the imagery down stone cold, but beyond that? The last video/song that completely blew my mind out the back of my head was Lady Gaga's Bad Romance. That was sheer, unadulterated genius, and I don't use "genius" lightly -- start to finish that lady is a phenomenon. I guess what I'm blabbering on about is that outside of my metal/hard rock milieu, much of pop and pop rock, in general, mystifies me...it seems kinda meh (with the recent exception of Silk Sonic...cause....hot damn). 😉😁
