The other person I would recommend is VinoFarms here on RU-vid, he has several videos that hes made about how he preps his bees for the winter. If you watch his stuff I'm sure you will learn a lot from both EmmyMade and VinoFarms. 💜💜💜 Happy New Years!

Check out JP the bee man. He's amazing. I would suggest some wax starters for the next time so they build the right direction. I would also suggest giving a little more space between your frames. They look a little too snug.

They had lots of honey - so supply wasn't an issue. Sun may have been limited, but they were inside, not sure how/why that would've been an issue. They had plenty of wind block from the aviary coop and the surrounding trees. I'm still leaning on them being southern bees that weren't acclimated to our winters. I could've sealed off their hive but then they wouldn't have been able to get out on warm days.

@@whitehouseonthehill is there only one opening for them to get in and out of? I'm thinking it's mainly because of them being a southern hive as well but extra food and insulation never hurt

Well-put and this comment sounds like the most realistic and knowledgeable explanation of what happened with their hive compared to the opinions of these so-called "bee experts" in youtube comments lol. I'm wondering about mites too, it looked to me like some bees had white dots on them, is that a sign of possible pests? That'd explain why the hive wasn't healthy if so. Thanks for the neutral and calm tone and info very interesting

I definitely agree. You shouldn’t take honey from bees especially during the winter. During the winter there aren’t nearly as many flowers so there is no way to refill the honey when it gets low. If the bees weren’t dead at first they certainly will be now. Honey is their food. The food they worked so hard to make. Just let them be

Just like bears need to fatten up before hibernating through winter, the hive (which is the complete organism of the bee, individual bees are just "limbs") must fatten up. Honey is that fat, and beekeeping is all about helping the bees maintain a healthy balance as bees can literally drown in their honey or die from overcrowding.

I don’t mean to come across rude or negative. Sadly honeybees are not meant to be kept within a building/ greenhouse especially with moisture. It messes with their clock and their hive environment. As a side note bumblebees can actually do well in them, though I don’t have first hand experience with that.

Normally we don't open a hive in the winter time!

A big greenhouse/high tunnel could work. Our greenhouse would probably confuse them. But I'll keep that in mind if that will keep them warm enough. I might just build them some kind of shelter to keep them clear of cold winds and snow.

Plant chamomile as well. Can be used to make your own teas. Mint and Hibiscus are others I would consider to plant to infuse with the honey and also mix in with the chamomile to make my own tea blends. Hibiscus flower petals dried out and mixed with a few cloves, cinnamon sticks, sweetened with natural honey is excellent. Chamomile, cloves, ginger, cinnamon sticks & natural honey. The combos are just the start to a never ending combinations.

@@Onlyindianpj yes!! I am dying to try out the bee barn design. It looks absolutely fantastic. I actually live in the same state as Vino Farm, just at a lower elevation, and his design looks perfect for our climate. I was thrilled to see his newest update and that all of his colonies seem to be thriving through the winter.

Warming them up unless you can put them in a shed where you maintain 40°f will caused them to be Over active and burn through all their stores. This may also cause them to start raising brood before they can protect it from the cold. They had plenty of insulation, they were in full sun. I don’t think wrapping them in tarpaper would’ve helped. More than likely it was probably mites or the Damaged Queen. That other hive will be ready to get split in May. Those are the bees you want winter survivors!

@@rstlr01 I agree the swarm bees are already acclimated. Look up videos on how to split hives. JP the bee man, 628dirtrooster bees and Jeff Horchoff bees channels all put out videos on catching and caring for swarms or bees who built hives in people’s homes. I’m not saying to go out and catch another swarm, but these guys do a good job of documenting how to keep those bees healthy, harvest their honey and repurpose the wax.

No, that queen is in the "wild swarm" hive, the one that's still alive (I guess they didn't actually go through that hive to make sure she was still alive, but since the hive is alive, I'm assuming she is too). They said the hive that died is the colony they got from the Southern US. Still very sad about those bees though.

We wanted to build our hives and frames, we did put pre-built comb in some of the frames. We may try other hives next year along with our horizontal hives. It doesn't automatically make bees survive the winter, just easier to harvest honey, I get that.

And watching the end of the vid, i do think local bees or like bees that are used to the weather you live in will increase the chance of surviving the winter😀👍

First he said it was 50 degrees and then he said he did not hear the bees buzzing so they opened up the hive. The bees were dead so they harvested the honey so the insects would not destroy the load of honey inside the hive....I think he is doing a fine job out on that hill and so is she....
