Rich & creamy petit fours! Thin Layers of baked honey flavored pastry are filled with pudding filling, jam and finished off with a coat of chocolate glaze!
When it comes to Christmas baking in Slovakia, small, bite size desserts are traditionally baked. Most of them are shortbread, biscuits and cookies because these can be prepared well ahead so you don’t have to stress out 2 days before the D-day (well, it doesn’t mean we don’t stress out - but usually it’s over other bits and pieces, ha).

looks lovely, i've just made it & it's chilling in the fridge for tomorrow - but my pastry is freaking rock solid, literally so hard so i wonder if that's how it's supposed to be??

In Slovakia, pudding is a dessert and we make it like this: You need 0.5 liter of milk, one pack of vanilla pudding powder (e.g. by Dr. Oetker) - it's usually almost 40 grams, and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Take 1/3 of milk and mix it with the pudding powder and sugar. Make the remaining 2/3 of milk boil. When it boils, pour your mix into the boiling milk and cook it for a minute or two. If you don't have the pudding powder, you can use corn starch instead (you can add some vanilla, to add flavor). For this recipe, you make pudding without sugar, just milk and pudding powder, because you have sugar mixed with butter already. This is the traditional Slovak honey cake, and usually the filling right in the middle is not pudding, but plum marmelade, so the cake looks like this: filling - marmelade - filling.
