“Everything is Free” is a song that we have covered for a long time. At the end of the night for a few special shows, we used to go out into the audience and sing it acoustically. Gillian Welch has long been my favorite songwriter and my love of her music has shaped my life in many ways. If not for Gillian Welch, I would never have applied to Berklee College of Music (where she attended and met her long time partner, Dave Rawlings), and therefore would never have met Chris or Ben. Putting things plainly, without Gillian Welch there would be no Honeysuckle as we know it. “Everything is Free” is one of my very favorite songs, it so perfectly captures the tension between the music industry and the love of creating music as a necessity. Creators need to create, and I hope that people will contribute to assist artists so that this art can be shared and enjoyed.
