The LCD screen of my Honeywell CMS927 thermostat mostly stopped working.
See here how I fixed the display using a toaster.
(Also applies to the CM927 - the S indicates it was sold with the receiver. The 921 is the 1 day rather than 7 day version.)

I was all prepared to replace my Honeywell CM921 and was actually trawling the internet looking for them when I spotted your RU-vid video. Got to say a big "THANK YOU"!! Followed it to the letter and now have a full screen again. Many thanks for a great video.

Thank you Grandad's Shed, we had put up with extremely poor display for about three years and worked through your video - end result ...perfect display. Simple and clear instructions. Used a hairdryer on it's hottest setting instead of a toaster. Brilliant!!

Its really useful and charitable of people to post these instructional videos and I'm sure this one would be very good. The problem is that the daft music, which is much too loud, completely distracts from the video and I can hardly hear the instructions. Also the music annoyingly increases and decreases in volume when the activity is fast forwarding. Having said this the gent has a quiet voice and this probably compounds the problem. Its soooo... helpful to have access to these videos and thank goodness people post them - just maybe in future it would be better to have the volume matched to the violume of the instructions. Anyway - Thank you "My Grandads Shed" good video.

Hats off, sir. Just baked the LCD of thermostat I've found after it's being in a barn for 10 years. The screen was dead grey, only some light in the corner. Three "toasting" circles (it was getting better with every time) and it's ready for use. Thank you!

I agree with ngorongok about the music and the audio quality - however, this video was super helpful to me in solving my problem with ghost characters on my CMS927 thermostat. I was planning to buy a new one - but the CMS927 is discontinued. Honeywell tell me it can't be repaired and recommend replacing with a Honeywell T4R thermostat (about £100) which then would need to be paired with with the installed receiver. This video (plus a bit of added ingenuity) has saved me all of that. My first attempt, using a toaster, failed but when I used a hair dryer and added a piece of shaved down ice lolly stick as square section packing (as at 7:04) it worked perfectly. I now have a fully functional thermostat with all digits and characters displaying correctly - and I've have had an enjoyable and rewarding afternoon. Many thanks!

One of my CM927s lost part of its display earlier this month. I watched this video and others and decided to tackle the repair once I was back from a short holiday. I took the batteries out and left the CM927 in a room which will have been quite warm in view of recent good weather. I am now home again. I replaced the batteries and was delighted to find that the display was back to normal. Of course, I have no idea how long it will be before there is another failure of the display, but my advice would be to not rush into dismantling a unit until you have given it a chance to auto-repair.

Tried this on my CM927 which had quite a bad case of failing display. Tried it a couple of times with a hairdryer and it ended up worse than it was originally. Decided I had nothing to lose so did it with a toaster for a couple of minutes and was amazed -- it's now perfect. So, the lesson I guess is, don't be afraid to give it a good toasting. Many thanks for the video.

Since the lcd didn't work i tried to ready heat for 2 to 3 min's also to the point the lcd slightly colored darker. And after the second long heat the display did work again !! Many Thanks .
@M1LKMAN2
@M1LKMAN2 3 года назад
Your mileage may vary, but in my experience this procedure absolutely works. Though you might have to repeat this. In my case, the first time I had to do this was about two years ago, and the second time last week. Important is to let it soak up the heat for at least 1 minute. It’s the combination of heat (not too much, to prevent melting everything) and time (so the adhesive warms consistently). I do expect that ultimately the LCD will fail at one point, but there’s been no reason to discard the unit yet.
@dirkdaems841

There are available in the market cheap soldering irons with flat tips for soldering especially these types of ribbon cable and also are available the cables since they are used widely in car dashboards for displaying various informations.This kind of repairs are time waisting because if not totally got broken it might or not work or even if works it lasts for a very limited period of time.

I don't know what that tape is - probably a version of Kapton tape which holds the screen flexi-connector onto the PCB. This is why I used the packing shown at 6:58 while it was being heated. Another viewer suggested an ice lolly stick as about the right size to start with.

How many degrees do you calculate? I'd use a heat gun. Thanks!
@mygrandadsshed
@mygrandadsshed 3 года назад
The original manufacturing process would have has either used a IR or vapour phase solder reflow profile. Search for 'solder reflow profile' and look at the temperature time profiles. With a heat gun you need to be careful as it could get too hot. The slow ramp at the start of these profiles is to ensure that the components on the board don't crack with thermal shock. Target temperature should be around 200°C and no hotter than 250°C.
