We celebrated the new authoritative translation from Penguin Classics of The Story of Hong Gildong--arguably the single-most important book of classic Korean fiction. Following the adventures of the Robin Hood-like Hong Gildong, this social justice fairy tale has been adapted into feature films, television shows, cartoons, and even a video game. As NPR writes, "Hong Gildong is an iconic figure in the Korean literary canon...He's the mythic center of a sometimes-delightful, sometimes-unsettling tale, and it's time the Western world gets to know him." Translator Minsoo Kang will deliver a talk about his new translation, and we’ll also present short reflections on Hong Gildong by novelists Min Jin Lee and Marie Myung-Ok Lee.
This event is cosponsored by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC) and the Center for Korean Research (CKR) - Columbia University

AAWW is a national not-for-profit arts organization devoted to the creating, publishing, developing and disseminating of creative writing by Asian Americans-in other words, we’re the preeminent organization dedicated to the belief that Asian American stories deserve to be told.
We’re building the Asian literary culture of tomorrow through our curatorial platform, which includes our New York events series and our online editorial initiatives. In a time when China and India are on the rise, when immigration is a vital electoral issue, when the detention of Muslim Americans is a matter of common practice, we believe Asian American literature is vital to interpret our post-multicultural but not post-racial age. Our curatorial take is intellectual and alternative, pop cultural and highbrow, warm and artistically innovative, and vested in New York City communities.
Our curatorial platform is premised on the idea of a big-tent Asian American cultural pluralism. We’re interested in both the New York publishing industry and ethnic studies, the South Asian diasporic novel and the Asian American story of assimilation, high culture and pop culture, Lisa Lowe and Amar Chitra Katha, avant-garde poetry and spoken word, journalism and critical race theory, Midnight’s Children and Dictee. We are against both an exclusive literary culture that believes that race does not exist and Asian American narratives that lead to self-stereotyping and limit the menu of our identity. We are for inventing the future of Asian American literary culture. Named one of the top five Asian American groups nationally, covered by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Poets & Writers, we are a safe community space and an anti-racist counterculture, incubating new ideas and interpretations of what it means to be both an American and a global citizen.

I went to a local bookstore and bought it after watching this video. The translation is good from what I can tell. I haven't been exposed to other versions so I can't really comment on the quality of the translation too much but it read well. The subtle language quality, both tonally and flavor wise (the way he captures the courtly atmosphere, of its rigidity, refinement and deceptions) is remarkably enjoyable. What I appreciated more than anything was Min Soo Kang's extensive notes. There is a tremendous wealth of information there. His scholarly curiosity, zeal, and expertise can be experienced in the way he unpacks a lot of seemingly common or simple terms and phrases. They are deep and highly informative, and fun as well! He also exposes a lot of elusive myth behind the author and does his best to clarify a lot of misconceptions about the work, which in many ways has been closely liked with the Korean identity. His musings on the patriarchal backdrop is fascinating as well. After reading the story, with its central theme being that of a low born successfully climbing the social ladder, I was wondering why this story has resonated with Koreans so broadly and deeply. Hong Gildong's lowborn status conflicting with that of this father's legitimate status is what defines the story in my opinion. That struggle seems to resonate with Koreans deeply. It might be the idea of injustice and the notion of repressing one's talents and possible opportunities that stokes something deep in every Korean's heart. Glad to see fellow Korean Americans not just showcasing the immigrant/diaspora stories, which are important, but going beyond that and exposing the rich heritage of Korean lores that sheds light on Korean culture.
