A housing project in southwestern China’s Sichuan province promised residents an idyllic life in a ‘vertical forest’, with manicured gardens on every balcony. But it ended up looking post-apocalyptic and overrun by plants, and also attracted mosquitoes. Only about 10 families out of 826 apartments have moved in.

It actually looks better with the plants, they just need to add plants that repel mosquitoes like lemon grass, basil, lavender, mint plus it adds a beautiful aroma to the homes

Taking care of maintenance? Who will pay for it? These housing are a form of investment and these people who bought them are not even living in there. Local government knows it and these building always sold out, then building fall down due to cheap quality and cut corner since the land belong to the government, so if the building fall apart, time to build more and sell more.
@eklectiktoni
@eklectiktoni 3 года назад
Agreed. It sounds like an unreasonable problem to have. Here in the US, many housing complexes have HOA fees. The homeowners have to pay dues to the HOA that keeps up the property. And regarding the mosquito issue, all they have to do is mix Bti into the soil (Bti is Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis). It's sold here under the brand name Mosquito Dunks. It's a bacteria (harmless to humans and most animals) that kills mosquitoes. It's relatively cheap and I use it in all my outdoor pots.

Exactly, I had a garden in 2019 with cucumber, strawberry, bell pepper and basil. The hot climate of subtropical Florida prevented the strawberries from growing, the cucumber did fine but pests used to the climate destroyed it. Same with bell peppers, pests ate it and left the plants alone. Basil however does very well in tropical climates and is a natural pest repellent, so the basil I planted ended up growing up to half a meter tall, I could pick the leaves whenever I wanted and pests avoided every part of the plant. For my next garden I'm planning on using basil as a companion plant for plants with fruit to keep pests away.

@@miriammeenattoor2952 China is absolutely notorious for theft of intellectual property around the globe and rebranding it as their own. They also have a notorious problem of cutting corners in just about every type of job sector to save a buck, and with that said, they seem to just build massive, publicity-attracting properties that have absolutely no thought process behind them besides money, like how many super malls have they built that NEVER had the size crowd they were built for & are now already either torn down, abandoned, or turned into something else? Ridiculous. Most people outside of China knew that would happen at the rate they were building them back then. Now with the cutting corners, you see that in the job-related death rate of construction workers and the number of designer drugs we can STILL purchase from them online. Most of the "off brand" technology that they release in mainland China is indeed a prime example of their notoriety for stealing intellectual property from other countries and claiming it as theirs in their own country, which makes them A LOT of money while keeping it all just within their borders and away from potential controversy. Their amusement parks & rides are also one of the main examples that come to mind that fits EVERY issue I listed.

They must have some automated watering system. The fact this wasn’t considered on the design is a bit tragic. A simple setup to balance the mosquito issue with a sustainable predator for them would have at least helped to control the population. In the US the tenant would be responsible for maintenance of the garden - even if not actually residing there. This could bring jobs for people to maintain the plants and keep them from becoming over grown. Maybe a vertical koi pond? Like the Japanese did in ancient times (and still do in some places) - Oh, I’ve said too much...

It's honestly not that bad. The worse part is probably how quiet & dark it is in the night because few people lives there. They just need to balance the plants a bit. Plant something that repel mosquitoes, probably some fruit/veggies too. It already looks stunning and I cant imagine how wonderful it's when it's lively.

This is ridiculous do you realize how they determine when a balcony is structurally sound enough to be used? They use materials far denser than any human or plant and they make sure that it can be basically completely filled with it.
@miketype1each
@miketype1each 3 года назад
@@Sh4dxwxz Oh, fine... that is, if they've done the proper engineering work and the builders faithfully followed the plans set before them. Nonetheless, what is the necessity of those balcony gardens? Did they not account for the inevitbility of insect infestation? Obviously not. So, one wonders about the rest of the build.
@Sh4dxwxz
@Sh4dxwxz 3 года назад
@@miketype1each True but the gravity of a collapsing balcony vs the gravity of some mosquitos is extremely different. You're talking about the potential loss of multiple lives vs the requirements to redo a garden.

@@miketype1each So my point is building code is something that could end up alot of people in jail if it's not followed. However poorly thinking out a garden is actually a way that you can potentially make alot of money by cutting cost on things like gardeners and botanists.

Well I like how it looks and hopefully there is a way to make it viable. Think of the possibilities, fresh fruit and vegetables in the middle of the city. You can probably even sell off your surplus to the local farmers market. We need more stuff like this where people gain more independence from the supply chain.
@mrpurple11
@mrpurple11 3 года назад
Fruits and vegetables aren't that easy to grow amd not anybody can maintain them properly. It takes work. Also it's not only about what you do to care for your balcony your neighbors have to also be able (if they even feel like it) to care for their share to. This can't exactly work in bigger numbers. For now It would be better to make changes in the selection of plants, have consultants in botany and insects. MOST IMPORTANTLY to see that the people who bought the flats are actually living there and not just waiting for real state profit. If only just a handful of people are living there whatever job they do wouldn't mean nothing against a hundred on unattended balconies

If there are mosquitoes, that means there is standing water like puddles for them to live in. We get that problem a lot here in the summer, dumping old containers filled auth water, covering water sourses, and making sure you don't water the plants to much might help. Also, there are plants mosquitoes dont like, so if they plant those it'll help keep them away. And it sounds sucky, but if you make it so the wind blows easier between the buildings itll blow them away.
