Hong Kong actor Wong Cho-lam on how China’s reform and opening up affected entertainment industry

China’s reform and opening-up policies began 40 years ago, resulting in decades of rapid economic growth which made its economy the second-largest in the world. New wealth has had an impact across the country, including in Hong Kong - a former British colony and current Special Administrative Region of China. The South China Morning Post spoke to actor-comedian Wong Cho-lam to understand how new opportunities in China also bring major challenges for Hong Kong entertainment artists.

He is supporting preserving the unique cultures of different regions in China. It is to be applauded. China is a very big country with many minorities and unique cultures that deserve to be recognised.

@@titusp9488 I think Kong Kong's taste is different from the rest of Asia whether you think they are original or not. Places might have the same types of food but they dont all taste the same. I think we can all agree they are different.

Being able to speak about such a sensitive subject at the moment takes a lot of courage especially when he is working in both countries for his job. Especially if he takes the stand of China , his fellow countrymen of Hong Kong would cancel him as a traitor. He really handled the situation well to support both sides instead of taking a definitive stand

Don’t intentionally manipulatively preserve Hong Kong culture, let their people choose their own path. If they started liking Kpop or Cpop let them have the freedom. By that I mean, entertainment business shouldn’t narrow their mind set to “this is what they like and that is all I will produce and feed.” As for entertainment industry, it’s all about adapt and survive.

很中肯！听不懂粤语，全靠英文字幕。难以忘记七八十年代香港电影的黄金时代。如今没落也是有原因的。之前是机会多，机会在等人，而现在是机会少，人多，人在找机会。仅靠漂亮脸蛋和野生的努力已经不够了，希望香港能多注重艺术教育的提高。Best wishes to Hong Kong, 不要仅仅沉浸在过去的成就中，固步自封，反思学习进步才能跟上时代发展。

HK being an international city has fusionized many things ... his music ...his language....but when it comes to mainland...oh no we got to segregate. Ironic so many from all walks of life (places) seem to enjoy his fusioned “talent” while supporting his segregation. I think correct view maybe not to mix the wrong thing together but if done correctly creativity and integration of culture has helped mankind evolve. If not this guy won’t be sing rock ...he would be sing 粵語長篇 or just being a fisherman.

说得对啊。你可以向香港推广大陆的娱乐文化，也可以做一个本土的香港文化，可是两者的结合，在香港还未完全接受大陆娱乐媒体前，怎么说，有些超前，也有些speculative，钱多时间多自然可以大胆试。

But the shows in China are all copied from Korea. They did pay for the copy right license and I like that they added their own flavour into them. But you can't say that they're original. (奔跑吧 is from Running Man, 爸爸去哪兒 and 爸爸回來了 are from the Return of Superman, 中國有嘻哈 is from Show Me the Money, 拜託了冰箱 is from Chef & My Fridge etc.) I just hope China make more variety shows that is truly original.

Andy lau , chow youn fat, and steven chouw and many more previous 80 's to 90 's stars ,steal many heart of south east asia movie audiences for many years...all of them legends. Without those many previous stars in hk movie stars, especiially the' legend of hero' movie with staring andy lau if i was not mistaken, hongkong movie will be just in trash.

Hong Kong has its own culture it’s own style nothing about Hong Kong is similar to mainland China. Hong Kong should go back to making movies and music like it did in its glory days of the 80s and early to mid 90s it needs no help or cooperation from mainland China. More famous singers and actors should stop turning their back on their country of Hong Kong to chase money. It’s absolutely crazy hearing all these famous Hong kongers every interview they do speaking mandarin you are from Hong Kong do interviews in Cantonese. save the Hong Kong music and movie industry.

When compared to a competitive Mainland where talented people are trained well before even entering the market. It's like having a 180 iq, but never went to school and a 180 iq that has a phd. He starts out the interview saying to not mix mainland materials with HK materials in entertainment. But then he goes on to say that he incorporates what he learns from mainland into his HK variety shows. So which is it? To mix, or not to mix? All bullshit that has no logic whatsoever.

Clearly you don't understand the point. He said he bring the China entertainment style to Hong Kong to let ppl in HK learn bout it. He did not mix China and HK style. He just wanna try whether HK audience can accept China style. At 1st he also said if want to intro HK style in China, then don't mix with HK and China style variety show, just purely use HK style and see whether China audience can accept it.
