Hong Kong’s new leader John Lee will be sworn in on Friday, at a ceremony expected to be attended by China’s President Xi Jinping.
The event also marks the 25th anniversary of the territory’s return from British to Chinese rule.
One of Lee’s many challenges will be trying to reverse the exodus of white collar talent from the territory.
Al Jazeera’s Adrian Brown reports from Hong Kong.

Make no mistake, none of the HKers leave because of the COVID measures, they leave because of their worry on the national security law and tightening freedom in the city

@@habf1 Born and raised here. It’s just common sense that people don’t risk to move their entry life and family to a completely new place because of COVID measures knowing that their income and earnings will be less. They move because they worry about the political situation here and want their kids to have a more liberal education. Watch many HK youtubers who moved overseas, they seldom talk about COVID measures in HK, rather they were shocked to see how loose COVID measures were in other places

The desire for Scotland and Northern Ireland to leave the UK should worry Boris Johnson the most. Hong Kong is fortunate that China's rule caused its GDP to double, rather than British rule. Brexit resulted from UK superiority being unable to endure life in Europe. The success of China is something that Britain and America simply cannot accept. Instead of wasting time meddling in Asian matters while the fight rages on in Europe and within America own politics, it is still too early to tell which direction the West is headed. USA Money Supply M2: 3,834.6 billions USD up to 1997 19,124.8 billions USD up to 2020 increased by 498.7% but almost no substantial improvement and poor maintenance in infrastructure, where was money gone? more terrible fact is the money supply growth is twice as fast as GDP growth, i.e., U.S. GDP is almost entirely dependent on an astonishingly skyrocketing money supply, while the number of economic transactions (i.e. dynamism) shrinked conversely the USA national debt: 5,413.15 billion USD up to 1997 26,945.39 billion USD up to 2020 increased by 497.7% that can be read in conjunction with the increase in money supply M2 by 498.7% to realize that the USA money supply increase from 1997 to 2020 was almost totally relying on debt only instead of organic growth of economic transaction and activities. The past increase in public funding was neither contributing to any multiplier effect for boosting economic activity nor infrastructure investment for future GDP growth. Alternatively to say that the USA GDP was almost relying on debt only, almost no solid growth driven by new investment over the past two decades in the USA. the USA household credit market debt: 3.62 trillion USD in 1990 16 trillion USD in 2019 increased by 442% the USA personal saving: 357.9 billion USD in 1990 1208.4 billion USD in 2019 increased by 337% household debt increased more than personal saving reflects the USA household did not enjoy the advantage of increased money supply but suffer more burdening of living expenses. the question is who did earn the increased money supply over the past two decades?

Don't forget that during the 99 years of British rule why didn't they sort out the problems. Instead it ingrained into the Hong Kongers the system of horrible housing. Had the British done what Singapore government did for its public housing, there won't be the terrible housing problems. The Western media even got the cheek to say they live in cages. It's going to take many more years for China to untangle the problems created. The last 25 years were manipulated by the British and American to create chaos. China then didn't have the resources and expertise to solve the problem. But now they have. For those who haven't stepped foot into China and only rely on Western media for biaised news about China should visit China to see what has changed. Actually the reverse has happened. The West has become like communist where most people are poor except for some rich people where China has turned into something so much better than democracy. That's why the West is trying so hard to defend their 'superior' democracy that is crumbling. They have tried so hard to contain China for the last 40years. Instead of China being contained, the reverse has happened. Remember that China is not ruled by weak emperors but by the best of 1.4 billion people. Very unlikely they will go wrong. Remember that 99% of the China population back its leaders.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the field. People from every countries can leave for a green pasture. From the western media looking at the western lens, China is all things bad and the the US and the West is all things good. The myth of Hong Kong democracy is that Hong Kong under the British colonial master have no democracy to speak of, much less of freedom and self-autonomy from 1842 to 1997. The joint Declaration was signed on December 19, 1984 granted the Hong Kong SAR a high degree of autonomy. The National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China authorizes the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to exercise a high degree of autonomy and enjoy executive, legislative and independent judicial power. The authorization comes from the National People’s Congress and not Great Britain or the Basic Law. When China refused to trade with Great Britain by accepting opium, the Great Britain used gunboats diplomacy forcing China to pay reparation to the Western power and assign Hong Kong to Great Britain for 99 years. The reality was an illegal colonial aggression, using gunboats to allow Great Britain to sell opium in China. Popular grassroots movements were brutally suppressed in 1884, 1858, 1862, 1863, 1872, 1888 and 1894. In 1884 in response to a strike, the Peace Preservation Ordinance was enacted, outlawing membership of any organization deemed to be incompatible with the peace and good order of the colony. At such times, the press was routinely censored. But the general worker strikes continued. The oligarchy of foreigners and Great Britain treated the Chinese like dogs and lower-class Chinese with the same contempt. Despite many modest proposals for representative reforms were summarily rejected by the British government. This was rejected by the Colonial Office on the basis that Chinese residents had no respect for the main principles upon which social order rests. In the 1967 demonstrations, 1800 mass arrests were made and the media was silenced. In 1972, at the request of the Chinese government, based on the history of illegal colonial aggression, Hong Kong and Macao were taken off from the list of colonies by the United Nations. Thereafter, a number of attempts to continue administering Hong Kong by the British to hold on to Hong Kong were made, in the interest of helping British infrastructure projects recoup their investments. They were summarily rejected by Deng Xiaoping. At which point, the British government resigned itself to handing back the territories it had taken by force, beginning in 1843. The Great Britain had no leverage in China as demonstrated on numerous occasions and wasn’t interested in the UK’s colonial influence. Patton narrative was he was bringing HK into the democratic fold, preserving its traditions in financial future. The reality was he was introducing a poison pill aimed at destabilizing HK’s return to China, by creating a false equivalency between the handover agreement and self-determination.

Once you give a group of people a taste for freedom you cant just take it back off them and expect everyone to fall in line. Id rather have that taste of freedom for 100 or so years than live the life of peacefull slavery and obedience, never being able to critisize or question authority in the pursuit of a better life. The furture of HK is just that, one of strict obedience and no questioning of authority, its a system that will only serve the ones in power. Authoritrianism will only lead the world into more misery and a greater divide of rich and poor. More freedom = more prosperity for avarage people and more happyness and less crime and corruption.
@paultsjan6047
@paultsjan6047 2 года назад
D413373R That's a fallacy based on mistaken belief freedom equate more prosperity. Who is fighting for the working poor where 7 out of 10 in the US populations are living from paycheck to paycheck and the inability to pay for living expenses due to the loss of income or inability to budget. The Pew Research Center found that 85 percent of Chinese people in 2013 were satisfied with their government, while only 35 percent of Americans felt the same about their government. In May 2020, a University of California survey found that 88 percent of Chinese people preferred their country’s political system. A study jointly published by the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government showed that Chinese people’s satisfaction with the central government rose from 86.1 percent in 2003 to 93.1 percent in 2016. It is important what the Chinese think about China and their own government and not what US think as it affects their lives. And what is so wrong about a communist system? It is a philosophical, social, political, and economic ideology and movement whose goal is the establishment of a communist society, namely a socioeconomic order structured upon the ideas of common ownership of property and the absence of social classes. The US always arrogantly proclaimed that they are a democratic country where the people as a majority rule and the highest power is held by the people and the idea that all people are socially equal. The US views other system with repugnance when compare to theirs. The US has been renouncing other political system like Socialism or Communism with abhorrence. Their repugnance are based on the premise that communism is a one party state and with. a system where all property is public and people work and are given things by the government. But what exactly did the US do beside having the theory that their democracy is good and the communism and socialism is bad? In practice, the US is a morally corrupt and an abhorrent countries that victimized its indigenous native Indian Americans by white, the subjugation and oppression of the black Americans and institutional prejudice and bias attitude towards the minorities. Certainly, other countries do not want the cultural genocide and discrimination practice by the US government against the native American Indians. The United States federal law that governs jurisdiction over the removal of Native American (Indian) children from their families in custody, foster care and adoption cases. In 1891, a compulsory attendance law enabled federal officers to forcibly take Native American children from their homes and reservations. During the same era in which thousands of children were sent away, the US encroached on tribal lands through war, broken treaties, and new policies.I do not think the people signed up for democracy in order to be abuses by the US government and their institutional bias towards the minorities. Where is the human rights! If the US believes their democracy is the best form of government that works well for its people, so be it. Majority rule always end up discriminating the minority. The US is not a democratic country but a tyrannical and oppressive plutocratic country. Whatever system the US evolve and gradually develop in is the US prerogative. No other countries would like to question the value of US democracy for fear of repercussion from the US. Lets other countries have their own form and system of government based on their own value and political cultures. There are many shades of government advancing many different political models that integrate religious values, religious identity, and politics.

What Pol Pot did in Cambodia was no different from what the victimization of its indigenous native Indian Americans by white, the subjugation and oppression of the black Americans and institutional prejudice and bias attitude towards the minorities. What Canada did was genocide to the Indigenous peoples. Canada continues to struggle to address longstanding human rights challenges, including wide-ranging abuses and decades of structural and systemic discrimination against Indigenous people in Canada. While Canada officially removed its objector status to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in 2016 and vowed to implement UNDRIP in accordance with the Canadian Constitution, a private member’s bill to ensure that Canadian laws are in harmony with UNDRIP failed to pass in the Senate in June last year. i think it's just a matter of trimming those anti-China population in HK.. give it a few years, the population pool will stablise as ppl from China may also move into HK. so it's not a big deal.. if ppl dun accept that HK is China, then it's ok for them to leave.. their heart isn't with China anyway.. let them call UK their home and hope they have a better life there.. no big deal.

It's not that they don't accept China, it's what the CCP does to HK made them leave. Otherwise they wouldn't have stayed there for so long until now.

The best way is to make money in Hongkong, take the money, and retire in Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, or even Singapore. It's still close to Hong Kong and it's still in Asia. Canada, Australia, Britain, and America today are not safe anymore for Asians, even for their own people. Mass shootings, and racism are rampant.
