This was genuinely hard to watch. A lot of respect for Mr Tong for handling it so well. DW you need to fire your interviewer or change that slogan. This was not “made for minds” at all. An intern would have done more prep work than this. An absolute disgrace to journalism and a wasted valuable opportunity.
Compared with Joey Siu's interview 4 month later by the same interviewer, I would say Hong Kong government is professional and reassuring...... for real.
This style of interviewing only ignites and adds fuel to the fire. The situation in HK is unprecedented and needs a calming influence on both sides. Interviews like this, will only continue to Polarise HK and heighten tensions. Mr Tong shows a tolerance level that is admirable.
I agree with your statement. Just a heads up that the show is called "Conflict Zone", and that's exactly why I like and respect both the interviewer and interviewee, as one is attacking and the other defending his ground. Certainly, if this show were to be named anything differently we then could criticize the show and interviewer. Otherwise, this show is designed to create conflict and open to public debates on the topic.
Bravo,Mr Tong,I give you my thumbs up,Tim Sebastian is indeed very unfair towards you,he shouldn't frequently interrupt you,he is rude, aggressive, biased and ignorant,as you said, you should let you finish and air your opinion beause he was Interviewing you, otherwise,he can make a solo tv show for himself to air his shallow opinion out,he clear lack of information, truth, complicated background, deep story beneath the law and chinese culture.
Terry Young very well said. The interviewer is not really interested in what Mr. Tong answers. His whole purpose is to humiliate Mr. Tong and makes him look bad. At every attempt, he is being shoveled back. And credit is given to Mr. Tong.
DW should ask in future his reporter to do more research/homework beforehand, this guest can do no magic to let this Tim understands what was said .... Tim even felt his guest was insulting him..... omg
This interview was carried out like a interrogation, the reporter didn't plan to have an actual discussion on the issues and looking for the facts but an "planned answer" that he wants to hear instead. Prejudgments, discrimination, and even interviewer's personal bias lacked out during the interview, so unprofessional, bias, and disrespectful on the 'DW News' side, the interviewee Ronny Tong was polite enough by not left during half-way.
Tim's not interested in interviewing if he doesn't give time for Tong to speak - he's just putting words into Tong's mouth and trying to force the narrative.
From a totally neutral perspective, I’m curious why you think there is no point of argument that the interviewer raises? I think the international community would be more understanding if Beijing try to answer the rational concerns of the legal and business community.. simply totally denying there are any issues and saying people are crazy to examine it is cognitive dissonance on a grand scale. The passion with which people argue against facts regarding the issues here is almost as baffling as the way many Americans deny human driven climate change. Why must truth and logic be the first casualty of our era?
I would've been more interested in hearing the Hong Kong Bar Association's specific objections to the bill as opposed to Sebastian's use of them as a rhetorical stick to beat his interviewee with - which gives no insight into what their objections actually were.
but even some of the separatist lawyers are lying about what the bill says. a non legal person like myself can see they are lying. for one thing - there would be no extradition for political crimes...
The interviewer was destroyed by Mr Tong. The interviewer came up with those questions full of prejudice and had no knowledge of facts and then got slapped in the face left and right.
If this were to be considered a battle, then indeed the interviewer lose. However, just for the public to understand, those questions were meant to be attacking and full of prejudice, that is how the interviewer and how this channel makes profits. We as audiences get entertained based on how interviewer attacks and how the interviewee defends himself. Hence respect to both the interviewer and interviewee, they've done their job at a remarkable degree.
@@philyhai i saw it. I got to say I don't this interviewer, he doesn't have a real standard. He can change it to make conflicts, he make conflicts just to catch eyeballs. Does he really care the right and wrong, I doubt.
@@zhou133 A good interviewer doesn't necessary to have a position, but direct the questions from the other side of the interviewee. It is not about right or wrong. Same as the judge of common law system, his job is enforce the procedure is followed, but not the end results which is delivered by the jury, we audience this case. I think Tim is a great interviewer, and he need a good rival to match his game. Ronny is not on his level, but Ronny did well on standing on his ground, but lacking of tactics.
@Alex Zhang DW News is a German media. I guess according to the famous British comedy quote in 'Yes Minister', "The Germans went in to cleanse themselves of genocide and apply for readmission to the human race." They need to be politically correct and attack China and the Hong Kong government.
@@shiuhlam im sorry but if i were him i wil do the same. Just at the start of the interview he was smiling, but when he's explaining why Carrie doesn't need to resign, Tim interrupted, and it's annoying for me as viewer to continue my thinking. And he just doesnt want you guys protesters to know the truth
hahaha...ok, that was entertaining. This interviewer trying his utmost to irritate this Mr. Tong by just throwing every anti china rethoric he could find into the conversation. Although Mr .Tong being clumsy with his reactions, at least he's stating facts about the extradition bill. Pretty obvious Mr. Sebastian was only there to push an agenda instead of doing a proper interview.
Quite opposite, Ronny won the interview on my book. Although he was extremely annoyed by Tim, but he hardly kept his composure and stood his ground. Substantially he won the debate and Tim knew it. You can see from his smirk when he walked away.
@@philyhai Absolutely. He's probably never encountered with any guest who is not intimidated by his nastiness and rudeness attitude. Especially from a Chinese man.
Tony is right. Put your ideology aside and learn the facts and, for goodness's sake, read the law and make some efforts to understand before you condemn it with all the charged words and try to frame the issue misleadingly. And anyone care about that murdered girl anymore?
You think the HK bar association, the US Congress, Human Rights groups all did not read the law before making their public statements against the bill? Also, democrats in Hong Kong have been suggesting a one time extradition, or extraterritorial jurisdiction since day one to deal with the case of murdered girl. The government and the pro establishment party just don't care anymore.
Mr Tong, way to go. Mr Sebastian, what's the basic as a journalist? I actually give kudo to DW for posting it. Cause it's obvious to tell the facts over the interview.
He is not an adequate interviewer. Good interviewers do their homework, and act politely and professionally yet they keep their ground. Without doing homework, the only weapon Tim has is shouting and interrupting (basically whining).
@@uncletan888 Your comments showsd that your are a running dog. If you are a Chinese, please remember that your great, great, great, great ancestors are Chinese and they are from China. You are so ungrateful to their homeland. They will be weeping in their spiritual world, Mr running dog.
You're telling me, on your high horse, that the bill is eroding the rule of law. Yet at the same time, you're telling me, letting the arrested go free, is not an erosion of the rule of law.
This interview or rather interrogation was meant to stir up the already tense situation in HK I think the HK authority should vet thru and clear these kind of opportunistic jerk.
Extremely rude and unfair interview. It's a shame this kind of journalism is even allowed. It's a pure full frontal display of western arrogance and ignorance...
My thumb up goes to Mr. Tong for firmly holding on to his ground in a logical and articulate way. This interview makes Tim Sebastian look like an a$$hole.
@@crazylegshawn lol if the only argument you have is about my name, the I'd say, you sir are SB. You might not know what this acronym means in Chinese, but feel free to google it.
It would appear that this reporter Tim? was not listening when his guest tried to explain, most probably he only concentrated in saying his guest was wrong
what the interviewer do? He is so aggressive. he just want to judge something like god? Is he a professional interviewer? west media just a joke. A joke
where are so many people getting this "western media" phrase from? Isn't it like me talking about "Asian democracy" for example? I watch a wide range of news from all over the world, both left and right wing but have never troubled myself over whether they're western or not as one can find higher and lower levels of democracy throughout both eastern and western parts of the world.
No one told that when the interviewer asked same type of questions in the same way from the protesters. Then people said the protesters got exposed. But when this man ask the questions same way fron the government, you guysbhave a problem huh ? It shows how educated you fools are. You are just slaves of china
Yes, opinion matters but it depends on which side the opinion comes from. Haven't we seen enough of the double standards and hypocrisy of the so called democracies of the west?
This Tim only knows how to talk down on Mr Tong and exaggerated swiping statements to make his point across for more attention...the latter did well to interrupt him. ...you can see his offensive questioning is no match when he meets LKY.. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's interview with Mr. Tim Sebastian on BBC HARDTalk
If I was interviewed by him, I will ask him to leave. He left his manner at home. This is unacceptable by anyone. How could you let someone like this interview you? Especially if you are a senior position in the government.
Tim is great interviewer, he challenges everybody and he comes well prepared. I really enjoyed this interview. Tim won some on angering Ronny and aggressively get under Ronny's skin. But Ronny won the interview by standing on facts. They should have shake hands for the conflict they created together. I laughed so loud when seeing them walked separated way grudgingly. LOL

@@philyhai no, some rude behaviors are just unacceptable, and I DON'T think he behave all till the end and he has some points already and eager to testify and call out his own idea, then why the interview? you come for the facts and points, not doing a talk show. unprofessional!
@ See, Tim's job is to challenge Ronny's narrative with protester's words and ideology. If Ronny can't make his point crossed by Tim, he is not going to pacify the protesters either.
@ Tim has been in this business for a long time. People are familiar with his style, aggressive, interrogative, pushing buttons to extreme. If he is well mannered, he might lose his job a long time ago. I am sure Ronny and his team knew what they were getting into. On extradition bill issue, there weren't much new from Ronny for Tim. The problem here is: what Ronny claim are perfect logical on the paper; the protesters, the west and Tim on the other hand don't or don't want to believe what is on the paper will be the reality. There is no way, the counterparts will reach any agreement through this interview. Still this interview gave it a chance for the clash, to provide a conversation. Either supporter won't change their mind, but at least they had a chance to listen the voice from the other side.
@ Of course we can do that. On the sense of DW biased on certain issue and in favor some is true. That is the western way. The acceptance of Chinese way will be a long way. I really wish Ronny were on better game, not to be angered by Tim's tactic. Ronny had better substance to present.
the bald dude lose the debate in the end with an "unwilling thank u" and the victorious chinese man walks back to his desk like a boss without even shaking his hand
This journalist is not qualified in this interview. He does not know the issue and is talking to a high level politician who knows the issue thoroughly.... What a krock is this journalist... Mr. Tong is waisting his time...... It IS impolite to cut the other talking.. Mr. Tong has enormous patience, he has great experience
Where you from bro Tong is insulting all reputable lawyers all over the world and u think Tong is polite and patient? I think the questions the journalist is asking is fair questions. He just has a harsh voice and tone haha Tong is just being provoked cause he is doing wrong things.
Whenever he interviews these really elite people he always gets OWNED, period. Granted, reporters are not expected to have deeper knowledge or more penetrating insights into things but at least they are expected to behave with humility and politeness. Nothing to do with the questions.
@@HandsomeRabbit8 As what Mr Lee says, those interviewers only spent the last 24hrs preparing questions on a particular issue and think that they know better of the matter at hand than someone who has spent nearly his whole life pondering on solutions of the particular problem. I missed Mr Lee style of leadership badly.
Great interview! Sad for those who put negative comments. Please bear in mind first that this is actually not a neutral interview. IT IS A HEATED INTERVIEW emphasizing the strong side of opposition. It is not a personal view of the old man, It is the tough view of demonstrators which the old man trying to put inside the mind of the one interviewed. AND HE REALLY DID A GOOD JOB! NOTHING PERSONAL
Although Tim is being quite annoying, but the huge credit to him and/or DW, for at least provide the full video with very little editing or parts left out! Thanks DW news, this is one of the very few subjective or neutral piece of news out there on the internet, this is the only few that provide people multiple perspectives of views, I do support HK government and after watching, my perspectives has neither changed nor has been offended by this piece! Thanks a lot
This is a waste of time to watch. The interviewer is not qualify to do the job, lack of communication skills and never listen to the other side. If i were Mr. Tong, I would let Tim stop and go home. wasting his time.
Uk, HK, US BAR associations opinions are selfish on this extradition law. HK has extradition deal with all these countries. So they enjoyed this deal while do not care whether Chinese people who are victims of offenders of HongKong will have justice.
This is not an interview. Tim is speaking on behalf of the protesters. He repeatedly said the HK SAR leaders are wrong and should resign. I am very surprised that DW qualified Tim as their interviewer and he has no basic etiquette.
Beijing don't have to step in. HK is only a state....if they destroy their own state , let it be. China now have their own financial hub and port. HK gained those days when China close their door to the world previously. Today, the game has changed. HK state has to compete harder but looking at this new HK generation, I doubt they can go far....
Ronny Tong has so professionally exposed the hypocrisy and double standards of the interviewer and the western media. The way Tim was trying to push the narrative was to add more fuel to the fire in HK. Thumbs up to Mr.Tong.
I think he wanted to say that the government is doing something wrong as they didn't give a clear and through explanation about the law that which leads to a huge misinterpretation. However, the extradition law itself is not wrong. This interviewer interrupted for so many times...
Interviewer is already biased! Why bother to get him to interview! He needs to do research before his interview. If I am Mr Tong, I will just walk out....
If Mr Tong had walked out, he would have been widely perceived as having lost the debate. Instead, he remained cool and used facts and logic to rebut Tim Sebastian's arguments decisively. The look on the interviewer's face at the end (25:45) says it all.
The interviewer is rude and enjoys troubling the interviewee. But because of this, Mr Tong as triumph over the "debate" with Tim, he has answered facts with coolness and is able to answer all difficult questions very well with solid explanation.
@ As far as I know, it is an interview, I am not a interviewer by profession, so please do right me if I am wrong. As a professional interviewer, when you pose a question, you should wait for the interviewee to reply instead of interupting at all time, is it so? And even if it is a heated debate, everyone should be given a fair chance to speak. While he poses difficult questions, he is very disrespecful.

Karen he is doing fantastic job. He can’t let other person to bulshit. He wants straight answers.
The Tim is working hard to make the case clear. He wins, people understand that the chaotic situations are caused by people not following the rules of law while the Hong Kong government is fighting for justice and preventing the rules of law to erode.
Do you know you, Hongees, are already very Lucky. Do you know Hong Kong had been under the British Rule, without Voting Rights, for 156 years and what did the British do to HK NOTHING except Blundering the Colony and ship the money back to UK and created a Very Curupct Government and Police Force. Ask your Grand-parents
Why don't you bring up HK never had voting rights for thousands of years during ancient Chinese rule? Besides, UK tried to push for democracy in HK in 1960s (like in other British colonies back then), but it is China that actively stopped the effort, and threatened war.
They are marching for their independent judiciary and institutions which are very much leftover British institutions that Hong Kongers seem quite pleased with
Mr Tong, thank you for explaining the extradition bill, it was a great and seriously stend up, please if I can suggest to explain publicly what laws or bill are, this protest is going on too long because no one ever explained what are really doing the hk justice. As always in HK missing communication create huge troubles
Obviously, Tim did not want to hold a interview but criticise the government of Hong Kong and China. After seeing he interviewed Joey Siu, it seems somethings must have happened in DW.
I think this was a very nice interview. All the people around the world wanted to know the answer why carrie lam still hasn’t resigned and we heard the answers from them.
I liked both of them to be honest. If you watch Tim's interview of HK riot leader Joey Siu, he brought up the exact same points of amnesty. This is his tactic of interviewing, by asking critical questions, by provoking the interviewees, getting under their skin and hope for them to speak out what they truly believes (as opposed to repeating memorized scripts),
Right, but he gave Siu so many chances to make sensible answers. She just couldn't do it. If you compare the style of interview, Tim was way too generous to Siu.
To suggest that opinions matter more than facts goes to show how unprepared and/or ignorant the interviewer was for this interview. Which also explains his loud and antagonistic demeanor. I'm more impressed by the patience of the interviewee to sit through the whole interview with someone constantly speaking over you and fishing with leading questions.
I feel ashame n at the same time felt sorry for this Tim SirBADian. U wanted a interview but u don't give the guy the time n opportunity to answer. N when he's giving answers that u r not happy with, u rudely cut him off as if u r the smartest person on earth 😂 Kudos n well done Ronny Tong ❤👏👍💪
