Hong Kong's 'once-in-500 years' downpour

The world is finally coming to an end...

Almost reminds me of one of my years in Houston; not during a hurricane, mind you; but rather something unexpected….’just a tropical depression’ that came over the area with a lot of rain…BUT THEN STOPPED, AND STAYED STOPPED, AND KEPT RAINING!. 27 inches of rain in 24 hours made the street in front of my apartment an impassable river for a day. But, it never rose above just a ‘tropical depression’ level, so people never had an inkling of what was to come.

The unpredictable weather patterns and effect of El Niño in the Pacific make weather forecasting more challenging these days. It is becoming the common practice of some countries nowadays to always put to high alert all their resources whenever weather disturbances arise and warn their citizens well ahead of time of possible catastrophic events. Some of these responses are exaggerated at times but it's better that way rather than being blamed later for being silent or passive.

Indonesia, especially Jakarta didn't have rain for almost 1,5 months. In part of the country, experienced forest wild fires because it's very hot and dry

Roads and tunnels will become rivers. HK is entirely paved in concrete. No amount of construction would have prevented this massive flood. Luckily, HK is all high-rises and people can just move upstairs. Flood vs Fire...which is preferred? Flood like this will become more frequent in a world of increasing wild weather. Rain instead of falling into oceans are falling on land.... Greece, Turkiye, Germany, Arizona deserts, Brazil, HK, China, Japan.... Just be mentally prepared to evacuate if you are on the ground floor. Keep your precious belongs on a high rack.

What kind of cars are the red and black taxis? Are they still being made?

How can you predict a once in 500 year event? It is difficult to make predictions, especially regarding the future.

They couldn’t warn the public? Other countries are able to see approaching weather patterns and are able to warn their citizens….but they can’t?…….hmmm

What a load of garbage, if there weather system workers are that bad sack them, this is predictable and warnings should have been given days before for people to be prepared with water, food, medicine and other emergency supplies plus allow people to decide to leave, move to higher ground, prepare homes etc....the same happened in China and is a Disaster of epic proportions thousands dead, thousands homeless or living in damaged homes, food sources obliterated, sanitation and safe water non existent....people deserve better than being treated so inhumanly

considering HK is a bunch of islands/peninsula and much water all around and yet they still had these floods meana that's a huge amount of water not enough for the drainage system to deal with

These tragedies are terrible. But I am curious, where are we getting the data for rain/water volumes from 500 years ago? Is there any way new outlets can report the news without sensationalism titles, terms or events?

Blaming the "unpredictability" of the rainfall is the same as when Turkey's president said the earthquake was "unforeseen" and nobody could have prepared for it (when in fact they had years to build better buildings & prepare for earthquakes.).

Zero planning as they do when they flood their own cities. They should be held accountable for loss of life and property damage! Clearly HK govt officials are afraid to blame the mainland for the 'worst in 140 year' so-called 'natural floods' as the excuses run very thin. Hong Kong can handle epic typhoons and rain, yet the Shenzhen dam water release 'coinciding' with super flooding is a bit tough to swallow. No doubt the mainland wants to avoid paying for the damage, given its current pathetic economic situ. SCMP: "The Hong Kong government announced at 11.44pm that it had been told by authorities across the border that they would begin discharging water from the Shenzhen reservoir “from midnight” - just 16 minutes warning - as bad weather hit the city. “There may be a risk of flooding in some parts of the New Territories,” the government added. A notice from the Shenzhen Emergency Management Bureau said the discharge of reservoir water began at 12.15am on Friday at a rate of 70 to 80 cubic metres per second, which was increased to 120 cubic metres per second at 3.15am. “Staff from various departments got working immediately, and North district officers headed to six villages in the New Territories to see if residents would need help evacuating,” he added. But Mak Chan, a 78-year-old villager living in Fanling’s Lung Yeuk Tau, said he did not find out about the arrangement until the government announced it at 11.44pm, nor did he notice any officials coming by on Thursday night. Mak said the situation took a “distinct turn for the worse” around 1am, as rainwater seeped into his home and rose to 13 centimetres (5 inches) at one point."

On a hot earth, a half foot of rain in a single hour. Will become less of an outlier event. Eventually, eco-refugees will be represented by families, who have suffered multiple, livelihood ending, once in a generation, weather events. Folks are now having their second rebuilt life, burned down in Canada's forest fire season this year. Past few years, both the US and Canada have lost entire towns due to fire, or flood. In Asia how many lost their homes to repeat floods, or both flooding and later fire, the past few years. Australia had it's repeated flooding of many towns and a huge rodent outbreak afterwards. As well as massive forest fires the past few years. And the trend is growing, not decreasing. Our hot earth is under a growing heat, that isn't going to crest at 1.5 degrees. No matter how many accords get signed with selfies for all the world's guvs, to feel like they are doing something, by trying to talk the earth into a cooler state.
