Every day for seven months I walked past the collective photographs of the fallen Diggers while deployed to Kabul. Every day they silently implored that only my best was acceptable; otherwise there could more photos added to that wall. 12 months since Kabul was evacuated, every day is a challenge to 'just breath', except is is the words of my wife and family when they say 'I love you' which helps so much.

In my opinion nobody hates war more than the soldiers fighting it. How many wars do you think there would be if the politicians' families were fighting in them. I'd bet far fewer, and not over things such as political and economical interests. When I was in Iraq I didn't want to be shot at anymore, I didn't want to shoot at anyone anymore. I continued my mission until completion, but I just wanted to come home.

And it's your freedom so you won't have too.

Nightmares? What? The nightmares of sitting around drinking brews on a very well paid 8 month holiday for the 95% of people that went over there? Give me a break. Harden the f**k up pussys. Its fun over there - Its a fucking soldiers playground. The only thing you should be having nightmares about is the fact you will never be that awesome ever again - or the fact that you never actually got to shoot any one and that you just sat in a well protected base- you might of done a few patrols IF you are/were in a combat corp. And if your whinging about how its a "hell" and you got all these problems - then your a disgrace to the ozzy digger legend. Nice video but. Just the content is a bit soft.

Thanks for this great video. I know this is a tribute to Australian Soldiers, but this captures the feelings of thousands of men and women from all over the world who are sent away from their great countries to fight a war that is questioned by many. No matter what you believe, please pay these guys respect...because unless you've been to war, you will never understand just what we feel and what we have experienced. With all the good and bad memories i have from Afghanistan i will always hold them in my heart. I want to thank all Australian, American, and every serviceman from all over the world who have endured this hell.
@SirkaCat
@SirkaCat 10 лет назад
This video was recorded using video taken from an aussie soldiers helmet camera. For those who don't like what we do can go f*** themselves, becuase when the hammer comes down they say stop fighting someone elses war. Thing is, its been their war for thousands of years. And that day on 9-11-2001 when the radicals killed 3,000 citizens in the U.S. and millions more throughout the world, it became our war. We've had enough of these radicals who would target civillians, we're helping people get back on their feet after years of persecution and murder. We're feeding children and building schools, we're giving them health care. We're creating jobs that will help them to keep their families alive for one more day, like the Soldier said; "we're all pretty f***in lucky." And after 4 years in the USMC and 9 months in Afghanistan, I take nothing for granted. I live humbly, I respect people for their beliefs and I demand they respect mine. If you don't like what we do, shut your mouth cause you have no right to judge what we do. We do things you don't have you, we wash the blood from our hands and the mud from our boots, we fight for the people who cant fight for themselves. Imagine coming home from work or college and you hear an explosion, and running past you is a 5 year old with no arms because he was playing in a field and triggered an IED. These terrorists dont care, they kill their own; then they take pictures and blame it on the soldiers. Then ignorant people believe it and we are labeled the bad guys by our own citizens. So if you don't like what we do, you can kiss my camoflauge painted ass.
@quietthomas
@quietthomas 10 лет назад
One day you might find you can't wash blood from your hands... and that you can't bomb ideas. Radical actions (like killing without trial or charge) only serve to further radicalize people. If the current wars are for humanitarian reasons - why were they planned by PNAC/Wolfowitz 10 years before 9/11 - and why were they premised on fabricated claims of WMDs? And why are these supposed "humanitarian wars" (an oxymoron in it's self) so heavily resourced into Iraq and Afghanistan? These are pretty basic questions which come back to the main points - you can't wash blood off your hands... and you can't bomb radical ideas away. I hope there are some rights and services for you when you get home.

Actually you can wash blood off your hands, I did and was back at it the next day. I am a Marine, and damn proud of it. Its funny how people run to the military whenever there is a problem, 1 of 2 things happen always haplen after we are called: 1) are was blamed for every single new problem in the world and are seen as "merciless" baby killers; hated by even our own citizens for doing something the pussy liberals will never do. 2) those who are lucky enough to return with all of their parts are neglected by the government/citizens, we are never given a fair chance for a job that isnt taken by the liberals illegal immigrants, and are not even glanced at when we are homeless and jobless, living on the street. These two things happen because almost every single current generation citizen is too much a liberal buttwipe to stand for or with those that stand up for people who cant stand for themselves. I must guess that you two voted for Obama, hows it feel knowing hes destroying this country and making it easier for the muslim brotherhood to take over? What will you say when your wives and daughters are forced to wear a rag over their heads, not vote or even be able to drive? Who will you call then? The GhostBusters?

Once we leave Afghanistan it's all up to the Afghani's. Sadly Afghani's have no pride or loyalties to country, they have pride and loyalties to tribe. They're also centuries behind countries like America or Australia. Not just with their philosophy, but also with wars, education, technology, science, and so forth No doubt we went over there to find Osama and WMDs and failed (No WMDs, Osama in Pakistan), several soldiers and marines even killed civilians, intentionally or not. Plenty of soldiers, marines, sailors, and seals died, but that doesn't mean it's all for nothing. The past few years over there it's all gotten a lot more stable and we're helping the Afghani people by aiding, teaching, and training them. Helping one person to risk another soldiers life like my own is worth it in my opinion, keep in mind when you go over there you aren't "Dying for your country" you're "Risking your life for someone, in most cases you're risking your life for millions of people". Just imagine if you were that Afghani and you were just unlucky enough to be born in the wrong country.

Great video, very accurate. Unfortunately many people question if there is a real reason for the west to be there. The plant in the beginning of the video is poppy, 90% of the worlds heroin comes from Afghanistan. If your country has a heroin problem maybe you should reconsider your thoughts about our involvement. Additionally, regardless of the political climate 99% of the soldiers on the ground have made a positive impact on the individual afghan and the animals. While I was there not only did I fight the Taliban, I also medevaced countless children from child abuse to farming accidents to Taliban violence, helped make schools, seized mass amounts of black tar heroin, and saved 4 dogs that now have families in America. The media can portray us as violent savage murders, I could care less what your opinion of me is just take the second to re-think your opinion of involvement

Well done Tom ... a great short film indeed. I am ex-soldier myself and as it unfortunately happens, I attend the funeral of a dear but older friend only yesterday. Bill was a WW11 Digger who served 2 tours in PNG and he certainly experienced some terrible things during his war time service. But, upon his return to Oz, Bill had a similar attitude to yourself ... put the little things to one side, appreciate what you have and live life to the fullest because he was one of the lucky ones as there were many who didn't come home. Bill certainly lived life to the fullest. Again, well done Tom .... I feel your film bridges the gap no matter the era in which one served or will serve into the future.

Loved this clip, nice to see an Aussie perspective. I have only respect for those who serve. We may not always agree on the reasons why we have to get involved in some country's struggle but those serving don't question it, they just do it. And then they do it again. Not for any glory, there isn't any, none that matters anyway, but because they want to help, because they want to finish the job and see lives improved. Much respect.

Andre Lin Truth is, that whilst you may believe you "do it for your own reasons" that doesn't remove the fact that you wouldn't be doing it at all without the politicians and the millitary-industrial complex having decided for you. To decide post-hoc, once you're IN someone else's decision, IN someone else's consequences, to decide, and make up your mind - when you're already in a fight someone else has picked - is to not decide at all (it's merely to survive)... it is to justify. To explain to yourself. To create a narrative that you can live with. That's part of the problem - part of why they put you uni-form... so you can be formed into one. Captives under the banner of freedom. But it's the self whose harmed... and the self whose left alone when it's all over.

Now maybe people will understand better what soldiers go through and develop more empathy.

The worst part is the man that filmed this footage died in a car crash a couple of months after his deployment.

No, I am sorry. Miscommunication in a news article. I guess this proves the point you shouldn't believe everything you read.

People need to remember that it's not the soldiers fault that they are there. They are merely doing as they're told. The ones to blame are sitting safely in their big homes around the world.

Great video. I have friends who have fought and who are currently fighting overseas. Never take their actions and sacrifice for granted. Truly inspiring video. Cheers!
