Ellen Muriel Deason, known professionally as Kitty Wells, was a pioneering American country music singer born on August 30, 1919. She broke new ground for women in country music with her 1952 hit "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," which made her the first female country singer to top the U.S. country charts and established her as the genre's first female superstar. Wells, who had several pop crossover hits, was awarded top female vocalist honors for 14 consecutive years and remains the sixth most successful female vocalist in Billboard country chart history. Her influence paved the way for future female country artists, earning her the title "Queen of Country Music." Wells was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. She passed away on July 16, 2012.
