Vintage pictures from the Land of the Giants. Oregon, Washington and California. These pictures represent those that we will not see again, the Old Growth Timber. Log homes are still being built because they are energy efficient and use "Live" material- wood. It has warmth and you feel it. Soda-Blast.Com is proud to be part of the craftsmen who guard these homes from natures ravages from storms, insects and UV rays from the sun. Soda-Blast.Com's H260 Series Soda Blasters use corn cob or recycled crushed glass to strip those surfaces for renewed protection which includes borates for insects and penetrating sealants to keep out molds and moisture. More information can be found at www.Soda-Blast.Com. For blast pot or fan nozzle purchase or equipment rental information call us at 503-653-5571

I believe it was in Oregon where the lumber harvesting folks had noticed one particularly huge Sugar Pine specimen growing up from a valley originally full of large pines and other evergreens. They cleared everything around it so that they could make an event out of bringing that especially huge tree down. Hundreds of people from the area picniced and sat on the slopes facing the tree and cheered when it hit the ground. People would now pay to see such a magnificent specimen, still alive.

Replanting in my area ( Southern Oregon) of trees is a daily process, cutting them down is not. I feel we are being responsible in caring for our forests. Trees are a HUGE part of our economy and are very useful in construction or all our houses, so until we find a better way of building some trees have to fall.

These images remind me of my father's logging days in Southern Australia. I recall we had trucks like a White WC 20, an International R-190. Plus the usual collection of cross-cut saws and really good axe-men. Later we got one of the first self-powered chainsaws: a two-man Danarm. It was heavy as lead, and being quite unreliable, only a bit more productive than a good cross-cut.

When you say "those we will not see again", a lot of people, including many here, get the idea there are no old growth trees left. In fact, there are MILLIONS of acres of old growth timber standing as we speak, and protected in Wilderness Areas, State and Federal Parks and other protectorates. Industry itself was the first to set aside areas of such giants in the No. California, long before it was cool to do so....we still have a lot of the GIANTS with us, Redwoods, Sugar and Ponderosa, etc.

They really help shade my house in the summer, and slow the wind in the winter. They also help use up some of the CO2 that people worry so much about these days. Just doing my part, in a small way, to save our planet. ;)

The industry is to blame for it's own demise. Depleting old timber, and scaring the land as they cleared all the tress out. And WE talk about how THEY handle the "Rain Forest." They stripped the hills and Mt's, here & even the flat lands, & didn't replant back then. Now the growth isn't old enough, before the next cutting has come around again. One man built a forest in 30 years. We all need to do our part to bring the oxygen, animal habitat & clear sky's back.

Wood has certain properties that effect the sales of presevatives, paints, power tools, fire-extinguishers, etc. If homes could be blow moulded from space-age materials, like plastic bottles, they would have more insulation value, and UV resistance. However, those with the wood makes dah rules. In one California fire, only the home with ceramic siding emerged unscathed. Yes, wood left alone will rot and make new soil, as nature intended.

Thanks for the video. I can appreciate, just a little bit, how hard those men worked( I only cut "part time"), my hard hat is off to them. On a side note, New Hampshire was more than 80% clear cut 100 years ago, it is more than 80% forested right now. Conservation of our forests does work and is working. And we even have some untouched "old growth" still standing. Work safe. NHlocal.

To bcci324 - If you're living in a wood house, using toilet paper, own books, pencils, notebook paper, etc. etc. etc. - you are a consumer same as all the rest of us. When European area peoples started invading this landscape, this entire piece of turf of the 48 contiguous states we now call the U.S. - the humans we call (Indians), they - (back then), only consisted of a population size estimated to be 20,million, And, that population size - and life-style was completely in harmony with nature’s paradigm - not out of balance with, nor incompatible with - natures healthy functioning operation.. They hunted Bison, Elk, Deer, and Bear; foraged for roots and berries; set fire to the forests and prairies to improve the hunting; and in some places, grew crops. But the wilderness was huge and diverse, and all life - [including human] - was sub-subservient to the overwhelming, natural forces of nature. Now there are 380 million sloppy, self-centered, stupid, irresponsible, wasteful, humans, - who created a program called the ECONOMY - which is based on consuming nature’s products- products needed fuel the opeerations of this economic pardigm. And that paradigm needs to operate with steady growth in it's healthy functioning. The economy is the HUMAN web of life - laid out over, and on top of, Nature’s web of life. If the economic web of life isn’t operating fully and correctly, people don’t have jobs. Without money - they don’t have food, can’t have their own shelters, have computers, internet service, Tvs, cell phones, cars, etc etc etc. And people without necessities - die, and then others get very unhappy about their destitute financial situation, So they riot, lute, burn, and kill each other, to get what they can’t buy, so they go out to get their needs met..Humans are a continually growing, consuming horde - who cannot govern themselves - to not be smart about their behvior, they are a self-destructive, nature destructive, sea of problems And the first issue of their self-inflicted mess is - they can’t control their own population number of - their growing added numbers of more and more oftheir kin d .... more wasteful consuming polluters. Well - there you go. Have a pleasant day.
@chiparoo222
@chiparoo222 9 лет назад
bcci324 -- I didn't mean to try and be sarastic or put you down for your intelligent concern about leaving Old Growth Forests be, exist undisturbed - that's the only intelligent way to operate - protecting such important pieces of our ecosystem. I'm with you about that. I only wanted to bring to your attention that - our economic-program that's in place to make it possible for [too many] of us -to coexist with each other - and do business with each other - make money to use as the means of exchange to aquire (purchase) all the things needed, (or want) for survival, and for entertainment. - comes first - no one wants to go hungry, or their family go hungry, if they need to cut down a forest to insure their survival and wellbeing needs.are gained by doing that.. This economic system would operate almost perfectly - [if-if-if ] humans were perfect in their actions. If you want to really understand about how this world operates, why things are done the way they are - it's all understandable via knowing about how the economy operates - will explain most of the reasons.

bcci324 The images are from colonial times and you judge these people for wanting to build a future for themselves and generations to come? Timber from trees was used in those times for the building of log cabins, furniture and every day essentials. Your use of grammar and spelling suggest you have had poor education so maybe a trip to your local Library might be a good call and you can read up on your countries history and see a time when men were men and not the limp wristed softcocks that roam your neighborhood.

Trees will be cut for a long time to come.We can minimize it as we do now using electronic storage systems instead of paper and more e-books etc.The main issue is to regenerate by plantation instead of chopping down rain forests as in some countries.There is a lot of recycling happening in lot of countries.It may be the day when an alternative method to toilet paper is adopted then trees will be saved.Until then keep wiping.

could be plenty of reasons depending on the tree and where. Older tree will probably have better reproductive capabilities. Here in Australia the large black cockatoo species are in alot of trouble because they require a 200-300 yr old eucalyptus for a large hollow nesting space. Due to land clearing these trees are few and far between.
