Don't waste the space on your hood. Install the Lensun Solar 100watt solar panel and MPPT charge controller so you can maintain your car battery or auxiliary battery charged. This works on many types of batteries (Lithium, Lifepo4, AGM, lead, etc.) Just download the "SolarLife" app and connect to the MPPT via bluetooth from the convenience of your mobile phone.

If you use multiple extension cables and plugs chances are that you switched the + and - poles somewhere along the way. That has happened to me once while using off the shelf adapters and cables. So you might check the + all the way from the solar panel to your mppt,. And from your mppt to your battery.

@@CoastalGX You're welcome. Hope you will find the cause, whatever it is. Btw, it's a bit hard to see but is the mc4 plug at the end of the red extension cable (on screen at 14.16) a female plug? If it is you might have connected this red cable to the - male plug of the last black cable going into your mppt. Maybe I'm all wrong but I think it's worth checking.

@@Remko2011 The problem was with my crimping on both the Anderson plugs and MC4's. It was just a micro length from clicking properly. I know better now and everything is working as it should.

I purchased the 35 watt solar system with solar charger with Bluetooth for my start battery only. But I will definitely be checking out my solar panel before I mount it to my jeep gladiator rubicon hood

Everyone should check the solar panel with a multi meter before gluing it down to the hood.

Nice video - I like how you show us the struggles along the way - it is more real! I am considering just mounting a true sine wave inverter in the rear of my GX to charge my power station which I run my fridge and electric blanket from. the inverter will charge my power station when driving. Seems like a small 500W inverter connected from either the 3rd row power seat harness or from the engine bay (new wire run to the back like you did) should do the trick.

Hi John, thank you for the feedback. Yes, there’s options; Just make sure to check the appropriate wire gauge and fuses to avoid risk. 🎥

For the fridge, you want to pull straight from the battery, not from the charge controller.
@CoastalGX
@CoastalGX Год назад
I will have to double check that. This is the first I hear about that. 👍🏽

I believe the wire on the mppt solar charger is copper wire and the solar wire is tin coated copper wire and that’s where your problem I believe is.

How is this solar panel holding up? Does it still work?
@CoastalGX
@CoastalGX 6 месяцев назад
Yes! It’s permanently on and in use with a lithium iron battery. The battery powers up my Iceco fridge.

@elgastsos210 Год назад
If the battery is at 100%, How much charge do you lose over night from the fridge and will the panel recharge back to 100% the next day granted you have plenty of sunlight?
@CoastalGX
@CoastalGX Год назад
There’s a whole lot of “depends” to properly answer that question. What I can say is that I use a 53qt BougeRV fridge/freezer which is always on at 32f. With my setup, my battery still has power after 7 days. I top off the battery after day 7 with my Victron charger and I do it all over again. My truck is under covered parking during business hours at work so that means I don’t fully exploit the bright sunny days in South Texas. Also, the fridge works harder cause it’s always hot. So I would imagine that it would last longer if I was out in the sun longer or maybe less if it was overcast all the time, but maybe no effect since it would mean cooler temps? I can say I really love this setup and it’s been a game changer for me. Hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks for the informational video, I'm thinking about buyin the same panel for my 4runner but have it hooked to a Ecoflow power station and use that for my fridge and any other thing I might need 120V.
@CoastalGX
@CoastalGX 2 месяца назад
That should work; there’s different configurations. I’m still using this setup and it’s going strong. I park in covered parking at times and the heat is brutal so the fridge works hard. I have to charge my battery on weekends and the panel maintains it the rest of the time.

The simplest way is to connect to MPPT directly to the solar panel without the extension wire and then the wires that are coming from the MPPT to trigger charge the battery connect that with the extension wires that you already have installed to the battery that you have installed in the back of your Rig. That should fix the problem? The MPPT is designed and calibrated to work with the length of the wires coming out of the solar panel.
@CoastalGX
@CoastalGX Год назад
That’s what I ended up doing. The MPPT is located closed to the solar panel in the engine bay and then I ran the wire back to the lithium battery. It’s super hot in my area so I wanted to prevent having the MPPT under the hood.

Instead of adding more expensive hood shocks why not just add a hood kickstand like I have on my 2020 jeep gladiator rubicon. A kickstand would hold more weight than any shocks.

Some solar controller may have a minimum voltage requirement before it starts charging the cable from the hood to the back of car may cause a slight voltage drop just enough to keep the solar controller from kicking on

Hey Robbo! Great job with the trouble shooting tactics! I know you are a perfectionist, but don't be so hard on yourself. It looks awesome! Don't worry about the mess, you've always been great at cleaning things up, (I think mom taught us that...😉). Hey brother, have you considered one of those old school wind deflectors that are mounted along the front side of the hood? They were popular in the late 80's and early 90's, but I think it would help greatly to deflect any wind, sand, bugs, rocks or salty air that might want to get in between the panel and the hood. IDK...just a thought... Love you bro! Love your channel! Get up, get out and do something! It's not only a motto...it's an affirmation!

Could you not have run a metal conduit under the car and run the cables through there? You can also run other future cables throu the conduit later if its a big enough diameter.

You were losing too much voltage to the MPPT because of the length of the cable. The best decision was to move it closer to the solar panel
