I'm sorry you're in pain. My father grew up on a dairy farm but choose a different career. Regarding your grumpy old fart of a grandfather (no disrespect but this description paints the picture of him sooo well) but I wonder how much was because of pain. How did our grandparents or great grandparents manage their pain having used their bodies as a tool most of their lives.

Same here good man grew up on a dairy farm and I also just turned 50.. Hard work but a great life I would not change a thing

I know! I couldn’t wait to see others in chat. For me, the pain was dental and I finally gave up and got dentures but after years of intermittent agony I can just imagine the relief they feel once they heel up. Without his care there would be so much unnecessary suffering.

Cows don't have paws. Cats & dogs have paws. Cows have hooves. It was definitely a wonderful result to see her putting more weight on that hoof as the pain from it being handled abated.

Firstly, I'm so very sorry that you have to deal with such an unrelentingly painful condition. I also have issues with chronic pain, and I know exactly what you mean about how it's often only when the pain abates that you even fully realize just how much pain you've been in! There's something so immensely satisfying in seeing these poor animals get such instant relief. At least as humans we can generally comprehend what's causing pain, and because we have hands we have the ability to provide relief for ourselves through things like lancing...these poor cows probably can't comprehend why they're in so much pain, and since they don't have hands they can't do anything but just try to live with it. But I have no doubt that their experience when the pain is suddenly relieved is like ours: an indescribable sense of relief. And so it's just so lovely to see the relief provided to these animals. I sincerely wish you many more good days than bad! ❤

Also, after looking up your condition, I just realized that a dear friend of mine from university suffered from the same disease! It was painful to see her suffer. I really do wish you all the best.

@@maneckineckbeard1749 it is a tough condition and not spoken about very much and it can leave one feeling very isolated. i am sad whenever i hear that someone else has this dreadful disorder and i would not wish it on my worst enemy. I hope your chronic pain issues give you more good days than bad and my heart goes out to your uni friend with HS - i wish you the very best too x

Chances are, you grew up where I live now. SoCal, bunch of dairy farms that some are now redeveloped into homes. I've also wondered why they don't do hoof trimming out here, and I had an explanation a while back, and now I've forgotten. I think it has something to do with the amount of wear that the cows get here and the climate vs the ones in Scotland. The cows here are outdoors all the time, so they may get more natural wear than ones that move between outdoor and indoors.

If cows are kept inside on concrete like they are in these cold places (to keep the cows from losing weight and being stressed), they don’t get the same amount of wear on their hooves as they do outside on the grass and rocks. Also, they’re more likely to injure a hoof if they’re on really hard surfaces like concrete. I grew up on a farm in Texas. No cattle with bad feet. I did have to trim my horses’ feet, though. The horse have been bred so that they have to have a farrier even if they’re outside running around and not enclosed. Mustangs don’t need to, though. Their hooves wear down by Nature.
