HOOK Clip - "Pirates" (1991) Dustin Hoffman
PLOT: When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

And the way the _Jolly Roger_ is dramatically revealed with John Williams’s stirring pirate music rising and stomping and crashing with glee. The project was originally intended as a musical, and scenes like this feel very much like it. The pirates already have a chorus going.

I can still feel fear in my heart from the boo-box. As a kid, it was terrifying - the scene with Glenn Close's pirate struggling and screaming, being put into that chest with scorpions being dropped into a tiny hatch is still stuck in my head to this day.

I love rewatching this movie over and over until I notice the small things. Like the actor who plays the pirate with crutches actually broke the crutch and kinda kept going, until the next scene they put tape over it🤣

The set design by John Napier is ingenious. The pirate wharf is constructed out of the remains of all the vessels devoured by the roving _Jolly Roger._ It is a subtle reference to Barrie’s description of Hook’s ship in his exquisite novel, _Peter and Wendy,_ as “the cannibal of the seas.”

One of the greatest villain intro's of all time. The music, the pirates chanting, the design of the pirate village and the Jolly Roger. Then out comes Hook with his regal outfit, his powerful speech of revenge, then his intimidating gesture of those who doubt him, then some comedy of the red carpet, to show that only he is the celebrity, a Noble among the peasants. Then his act of cruelty to show he will not be underestimated even by his own men. As the tale says, 'he was handsome countenance and elegance of diction. And a bloodthirsty pirate.'

The version of Mr smee from this film sure seemed different from the one in the Disney film where he was merely a bumbling sidekick and the pirate crew didn't respect him at all. Must be because the film is closer to the original book.

The Boo Box is such an ingenious move on the writer's part. It's one thing to show children being afraid of Captain Hook, but to have a fully grown man (skillfully played by none other than Glenn Close), be absolutely PETRIFIED of him, is great story telling, without ever having to bold face exposition. The man is a walking nightmare. The Boogeyman incarnate.
