How are you planning on launching your players into the mist-shrouded land of Barovia? Are you going to do it by the book, or will you be adventurous in your own right and craft a beginning of your own?

Lunch Break Heroes I’ve decided on a hook I found from a RU-vid play through, Strahd ultimately steals the players from there day to day life. It starts with strahd in a dark room, (a mysterious gaunt humanoid figure looking into a basin of water when several images appear.) The images are the players.. I go into detail about what each player is doing, for example my paladin of redemption would be feeding/nurturing the homeless when a dark mist comes out of nowhere and steals them. (Id do Abit more detail than described) And go through each of the players giving them a moment to shine and describe their surroundings and day to day life before they are stolen. They all awaken on a field at the start of old svalich road My question is, would this hinder my characters? I’m worried they’ll focus too much of their attention on the mist and why it stole them.
@LunchBreakHeroes
@LunchBreakHeroes 5 лет назад
If you narrate Strahd looking into the basin, then the players are going to know what's going on, and won't focus too much on the mists. What you're describing is basically the "Into the Mists" adventure hook, with some individualized twists and a peek behind the curtain at Strahd. If you're going to run that, I might suggest finding reasons WHY Strahd would take these particular (unconnected?) adventurers out of their everyday lives in order to turn them into his playthings.

Were starting a nice mixture of a few modules. Its both Expedition to Ravenloft as well as some elements of CoS. I'm starting them doing a short aide quest where they are investigating a series of caverns that could lead to Gauntylgrym. They are thinking that they will be going into the underdark and eventually the dwarven complex but the caverns turn out to be a bust. Theyre going to have to return to their employer in Neverwinter empty handed. When they take their ling rest as the tavern, thats when the dream sequence begins. Stoked for the campaign. Also, kind of modeled it off of Dante's Inferno and they arent going to be only dealing with Strahd. They are going to have the opportunity to work alongside him to get his domain back from an older vampire strahd had let in and discovered his secret to the lands. Ie swamp, mountain and forest fanes. They can back Strahd and usher in the darkness as business as usual or they can battle both strahd and thr other Vampire. My party will end up doing this i think. Lol

@@joshuastath3373 that sounds absolutely awesome! Definitely a longer campaign by the sounds of it. Will other darklords, like Azalin, be making an appearance?
@joshuastath3373
@joshuastath3373 5 лет назад
@@LunchBreakHeroes Right now its currently a Vampire that is older and stronger than Strahd. Valruka is an agent of Azalin Rex of Darkon. The two have a long history against each other so it makes sense. So the party will battle both then a personal section (made by me) in an off shoot nightmare island in the mists, and then on to Darkon who they have already have a negative relationship with Azalin as he was trying to conquer Barovia. They'll eventually face Azalin in combat. Planning to tweak the grim harvest a bit to fit my needs. Its a long full campaign for the domains.

I had session 1 a character almost die, and to keep him engaged during his death saving throws. I talked about his nightmares of him being helpless and watching the same old horror of watching that werewolf kill his parents. I went into so much detail. Strahd sent him a dark sword that corrupts his heart. He’s not used it but it whispers to him. In his dreams he sees the same nightmare of watching his parents die this time the boy stands as the wolf approaches the sword rises from the ground. Whispering to him 😊

I started my second campaign of Barovia with stripping PCs of all equipment and starting in Death House. Loads of fun. Everyone grabbed knives off the table and from kitchen. College of Swords bard got the longsword over the fireplace. Monk ripped a curtain rod off the wall for his monk weapon. They all took spears from the suits of armor. Wizard was Order of Scribes, so was able to download his spell book as soon as they got to library. Cleric had it the hardest... No holy symbols in the house. I let her use the orb in the basement for spells. By then it was only useful in the shambling mound fight. Bard never got to use spells either, he couldn't play the harp.

The Death House is already considered a meat-grinder for level 1 and 2 characters, with several deadly encounters between them and the altar in the basement, and then several rooms of deadly traps between them and the exit. How do you avoid a TPK the characters only having access to the minimal equipment that is available in the Death House?
@LunchBreakHeroes
@LunchBreakHeroes 4 года назад
By toning down some of the encounters to focus more on the horror atmosphere, and by allowing the PCs to rely on their own ingenuity and whatever they can find inside the house. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aoi-KMd5Yds.html

There's tonnes of weapons and armor in death house. Like there are full plate armor, studded leather, halberds, heavy crossbow, a longsword, a Rapier, and a dagger and that's ignoring all of the other items that can be used as improvised weapons. But yeah, I mostly forgo the shade fight and severely weaken the ghoul fight in the basement.

Can you give me an advice? I Really liked your Pastry idea, and the Vestige Boons, but I think they conflict with each other. Players addicted to pastry will look to the dreams and offering of becoming a champion with suspicion. So, after seeing this video, I had an idea: What if the conclusion of theyr destiny is attached with the Vestiges? If you, let's say, mass murder the werewolf clan instead of resolving the leadership problem with the minimum amount of deaths, or leave the children to become new werewolfs, you became attuned to Yog, and receive his Dark Gift. With time, if he fails the saves, his soul is taken, and only can be retrieved at the Amber Temple. I think it's a way to connect with the old mechanics of Ravenloft (Fear, Horror and Madness). What do you think?

I'm curious as to how you think the Tarokka deck can be used outside of Curse of Strahd. For instance, in Pathfinder you have the Harrow Deck, which is similar. However, you can build a character around it who uses the cards in game. Or be able to tell general fortunes. What are your thoughts about something similar for Tarokka?
@LunchBreakHeroes
@LunchBreakHeroes 4 года назад
It's an interesting question, and one that has been mulled over by a lot of CoS community members. "How can I make good use of this $10 deck of cards beyond a single reading?" Because let's face it, that's a terrible cost:use ratio for a prop. I don't think any idea that's been tossed out there has really gained traction. I seem to remember a sort of "deck of many things" implementation of it that seemed interesting, if a bit overpowered. I think the easiest use of the Tarokka deck outside of CoS is to let it be a fortune-telling tool, just like it's used by the Vistani. This way, there's no hard-and-fast rules around which card means what, and any readings can be fluid enough to further the story that you or the PC are trying to tell.

I've seen two groups online play the whole campaign and I've also played it through once as a player. In all these cases, we just end up in Barovia and our backgrounds or others contacts didn't matter at all. I've decided to make Madam Eva the grandmother (or maybe a great-grandmother, I'm not sure which one would be better) of our two player characters which they are going to learn when they eventually see her! Madam Eva had a daughter who went to live her life as a mother of the two player characters.
@Ramperdos
@Ramperdos 4 года назад
I haven't had the time to read the whole book yet so could I ask your input on this? How long ago did Strahd turn into a vampire? I'm trying to decide how many generations have passed, because I really like the idea of Madam Eva being their grandmother or great-grandmother. That way the character's mother was also a Vistani by blood and was able to leave Barovia to raise a family in order to help Eva. And how do I make sure they are NOT able to leave Barovia like their mother (or grandmother if Eva turns out to be their great-grandmother)? I've been watching your videos for almost 6 hours straight now, trying to put me into the right headspace to prepare the campaign!

I was intending on using your new version of Drust Manor as an intro chapter for my players, but now that I've fallen upon your idea of leaving them as they went to bed... Would that change anything? Is there any monsters that would prove too tough inside your version of Death House?
@LunchBreakHeroes
@LunchBreakHeroes 4 года назад
It doesn't change anything, in fact. They can be transported into Barovia while they sleep, then wake up in the woods. Optionally, you can take away the equipment they weren't actually wearing. Then, as they walk westward toward the Village of Barovia, they come upon Durst Manor. Cue deadly shenanigans.

I’m a new dm in full prepping mode for Curse of Strahd. I’m fascinated with the dreams idea. I think plan on using it as my adventure hook. Already got my PCs working on which class they’re planning on playing. I’m limiting them to human/v human. We’re doing session zero and diving into session one on the same night. We’re all amped up to get to playing. But I have two questions. How do you handle dreams of two PCs are planning to play the same class? Is recommended to do the dream sequence 5 times in a row at the very start of session one or could I do the dreams individually like the week before that way we start the campaign with them already making their separate ways to the inn/tavern. TIA!

This got me thinking on a tangential issue that always bothered me about the Curse of Strahd: why are the Barovians there? I understand why Strahd is there: he murdered his brother, drank his blood, and tried to shack up with his girlfriend. But what did the Barovians do to warrant eternal punishment? The book says, “It is widely believed that she [Mother Night] has forsaken the Barovian people and sent the devil Strahd to punish them for their ancestors’ offenses.” Elsewhere it says the Barovians believe that, “The devil Strahd is a curse placed on the land because of a forgotten sin of the Barovians’ ancestors. (This is untrue, but Barovians believe it nonetheless.)” Maybe this isn’t literally true but not far off the mark. Maybe the Barovians, ahem, chosen to live (and relive) in Barovia are being punished for a forgotten sin they committed. Maybe Barovia is a personal hell for all of its inhabitants and not just Strahd. Maybe Strahd is their personal “devil.” For example, maybe Tatyana’s soul is trapped there because, in life, she led Strahd on and maybe hooked up with him with selfish motives only to then marry Sergei. Maybe the Priest had his own sin in life that he is reliving in some way in Barovia. And perhaps these souls could leave Barovia if they could only find redemption, a la CS Lewis’s The Great Divorce, but they can’t due to the ever-present fear of Strahd, their devil. Instead, they’re doomed to be reborn only to repeat their folly. Or maybe this is too Stephen King-ish for a D&D campaign.
@geektome4781
@geektome4781 3 года назад
I am starting to envision the “curse” of Strahd as just that: a curse on the Barovians people. And maybe overcoming Strahd is a story of redemption. As for the Vistani: they’re not Barovians and we’re not under Strahd’s authority when the curse was placed and, therefore, aren’t being damned and can therefore be given permission to leave Barovia.

How to you integrate this with the reading Eva does to determine the location of the magic items and Strahd?
@LunchBreakHeroes
@LunchBreakHeroes 4 года назад
You can work the personal readings in in any number of ways. One-on-one before or after the main reading, or as a group during the reading itself. In a group setting, you can have the personal readings come first before the main reading, or after. It's entirely up to you! I did mine as a group, before I did the main cards. Each character was told their destiny within the land, and then I worked my way into "Now that you know what you shall each do, let's see what tools fate has given you to accomplish your goals..."

The reward should be dependent on the destiny. If they reform the order of the silver knights, then they might get a squire or another companion.
