Tyler Hoover of Hoovie's Garage joins us with his rare and interesting Mercedes C36 AMG. The C36 is the first car produced after Mercedes-Benz took over AMG, and it is based on the C320 Sport. Once the C320 was finished at the Mercedes factory, it was transferred up the road to AMG, which installed the 3.6L Inline-Six Stroker Engine, sport suspension, and unique AMG interior bits. Though hampered by the old-school automatic transmission, the C36 is a very cool cruiser and an interesting piece of AMG history.

Definitely. AMG cars in general always had bullshit transmission. If they don't want to put a manual in it (like they should), at least make a good responsive automatic.

Starvin Marvin It's a '95. MB prides themselves on luxury and performance. They don't deal in stick shifts because to them, it changes the driving experience too far from luxury. The newer models are better, even with their automatics.

The point is that the car has been meticulously maintained. It was taken care of and not bounced between owners all over the place. In my experience, the older, one owner cars that I have been purchased had been maintained by someone that actually took pride in their vehicle. Maybe it is just an old person value but it matters to me.

It's basically a 3.2 M104 with a crank from a 3.0 OM606 diesel and some new forged rods and pistons. Quite weird but also very strong. There is a bunch of these in Europe with a big turbo and 700-1300hp. A very underrated 2JZ equivalent very few know about.

The owner doesnt seem to know much about this car and doesnt seem like the type of guy who apreciates it. I mean come on dude, at least put the rubber seal thats under the hood on the back of the motor back in its place. It takes two seconds. 95 and 96 c36 had a four speed and about 10-20 less hp than a 97(last year) which had a five speed transmision.

This isn't the first AMG, it's the first commonly developed vehicle between AMG and Mercedes. The C36 AMG was developed in 1993 but not sold til 1995.

its a 2.8L w the S Diesel forged crank to get 3.6L. Traded mine for an Evo 8 back in 2005 and never looked back lol. Mine had Koni Red on all corners, Camber adjustment arms out back and it handled great just no balls with only 270hp and no aftermarket support for that motor - they are german so they LEAK. Steering is dead-ish at best.

The W202 C55? or the W203? Yes there is a W202 C55. You had to buy a new C43 and then send it to Mercedes to have them convert it to a C55.

I owned one a few years ago - immaculate car. It made a superb noise but the transmission admittedly felt very oldschool. Mine was one of the last on a 97 plate 👍

Relative to an overpriced E36 M3 this is a steal and daily-able and rarer. Lotta Mercs coming up... mildly interested. IMO MB was mailing it in for the whole late 80s - 90s with over priced, over teched, boring cars that were bought by a lot of wankers... kinda like BMW's been doing since the 2000s.

I had to comment on his description.. but the C36 was the first mass produced hand built car by AMG. It was based on the C280 sport NOT the C320. The C320 came later in the line up as a replacement to the C280 in 2001. The engine came from the early model E320s and was stroked and bored to reach the 3.6 liters.

my dad always told me lower mileage cars can be a warning sign. cars are meant to be running and driven frequently. a car that has lasted 200,000 miles or so is the sign of an owner that maintained the car on a regular basis, where as a car that is 15 years old with only 30k miles is the sign of an owner that has let the car sit for very long periods of time, and likely will have a lot more problems down the road.

I didn't read the whole vid title so I was expecting Matt to announce a C43. My eyebrows raised when he said C36 because these cars are SUPER rare. I think I'd take one over a C43 just for the rarity aspect, but the C43 is nice too.

The C36 is definitely rare. I think only 200 were imported into the US for 1995. Ours is one of them.

Mercedes and their damn vacuum-actuated accessories. I had a 1980 240D, and even *that* car had vacuum-actuated stuff, despite the fact that it really didn’t have many features on it. But the nightmare was the 300D and 300SD of the same era - automatic climate-control with all that vacuum-operated shit on it, and it *never* works. Absolute insanity!

LMacNeill honestly you could just rip the blower motor out and install a vintage air underdash unit and just route the vents to all the other vents...simpler solution for ac in our w126’s
