For years, Noemi Spears had been living with an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), an abnormal collection of blood vessels in her brain that caused seizures, headaches, loss of consciousness and changes in her vision. Noemi was treated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors at Baptist Health Neuroscience Center, who successfully removed the AVM in Noemi's brain and actually improved her vision.
[Transcript]
[Arteriovenous malformations are a rare condition affecting about 250,000 people in the United States]
[Symptoms include sudden and severe headache, nausea & vomiting, seizures and loss of consciousness.]
[Noemi Spears]
But I love the fact that I can't seem to wipe the smile off my face, I just smile from ear to ear.
[Speaker 2]
On May 14, 2012, the time bomb in Noemi Spears brain was diffused. She had lived with the arteriovenous malformation, commonly called AVM, for 10 years. 32 year old Noemi was cured by an expert team of doctors at Baptist Hospital in Miami, Florida, which is at the forefront of providing treatments for patients like her.
[Jack Klem]
Noemi was referred to us here at Baptist for an arteriovenous malformation that had been treated previously, however, it was still active and at risk for bleeding, thereby compromising her ability to enjoy life.
[Barry T. Katzen]
Vascular malformations are an abnormal collection of blood vessels, that means things like arteries, veins, occasionally lymphatic vessels, and they don't develop in a normal way. They can be detected if they're on the skin because you can actually see them, but if they're deep to the skin they may remain hidden for long periods of time, and only be detected by accident. Here at the Institute we see vascular malformations in virtually every part of the body.
[Showing before and after Arterovenous]
[Sergio Gonzalez-Arias]
At Baptist we have a group of multi-specialties that can deliver all the treatment options required for malformations of the brain or the spinal cord. In Noemi's case we had Dr. Italo Linfante endovascular procedure specialist, and Dr. Jack Klem who collaborated to treat her arteriovenous malformation. Dr. Linfante paved the way with his endovascular treatment of Noemi's malformation for then Dr. Klem, be able to remove it surgically, definitively treating her malformation.
[Doctors performing surgery]
[Italo Linfante]
For the role of endovascular embolization is important for two reasons. First reason is because you can actually sometimes cure the vascular malformation just with endovascular approach. Most commonly, however, we can reduce the size or render this bomb, so to say, ineffective, so that the traditional surgery can be performed safely.
[Hospital employees working]
[Speaker 2]
Naomi was living a normal, healthy life before the AVM caused a brain hemorrhage at the age of 23. In subsequent years, she suffered numbness on one side of her body from the stroke. As the AVM in her brain bled on and off, she had seizures, debilitating headaches, loss of consciousness and changes in her vision. Until now, doctors were unable to help her.
[Noemi Spears]
I mean, these doctors are amazing at Baptist. They got right on it, found it and already put the puzzle together in less than a year.
[Jack Klem]
I believe that Naomi's outcome has been fantastic. This was an arteriovenous malformation uniquely positioned within her visual cortex and we were able to preserve and in fact, improve her vision.
[Italo Linfante]
So our outcome was a typical outcome for a patient that we treat nowadays and she did very well. She had no complications whatsoever.
[Noemi crying]
[Noemi Spears]
Every inch of me tells me my brain's fine and it's unbelievable. It's incredible, the feeling that my body feels. So, yeah, it's done.

I hope you are fine Naomi. Its one of the worst disease i ever seen. My brother had multicomplex AVM. I still keep looking on the internet. I keep asking could i have saved his life? his case was too complicated. We tried so many things for him. Surgery and embolisationdidnt work. 3 months after surgery he went bad again. I miss him so much. I wish you everyone going through this lot of courage and strength. God bless.

God bless you Noemi i am really so happy for you! I am an Avm survivor as well. Mine ruptured on March 10th of 2014 while working out. 3 Drs told my parents and my wife that i was going to die and to say their goodbyes but... 🙏🏽... 👆🏽💪🏽. God is SO good. I was completely paralized on my left side but now a year n a half later i am almost completely back to normal. I just have a field cut on the left side of both of my eyes but i can move all my left again. I am so desperate to see if i can get any help to regain what vision was lost because of the rupture.

Hi Louie thanks for sharing your story. I would like to know more about your experience as my brother in law suffered a AVM on March 28th 2022 and is still in the hospital. He is awake but only for short periods of the day. He’s not quite moving his hands as yet but we hope and pray he can regain strength and move them soon.

Here’s my story: So I was 8 years old (2016) and I had just my ordinary school day. Then it came to netball club, me and my team were just playing inside because it was raining outside. My head started hurting a little bit so I asked my cousin seren do you have a headache too? She said yes, so I thought nothing of it. It what’s then the end of netball club we grabbed our bags and headed out to go home. My eyes started watering because the pain was so bad I couldn’t stand it. I saw my dad standing on the yard (play ground) and I started to cry. My head felt as if meteorites were crashing down on my head. I whaled to my dad I have a really bad headache. He just said oh no let’s go home right now so you can rest, I nodded my head and we headed home. We got back to our house my dad told my mam the whole story and my sister had to go upstairs to get me some pjs and my mam tried to get them on me but I just collapsed and can’t really remember much after that. The next day I was throwing up and we just had to go to the doctors. So we ended up going for a checkup but for some reason the doctor didn’t shine a light in my eyes so my dad did it instead (still in the doctors) but I just threw up so then the doctor called an ambulance and they took 4hours to get to us but the hospital isn’t even that far from us. So after 4 hours the ambulance arrived and we started driving to our nearest hospital but they didn’t allow us to stay there so we had to go the the next one which was further away from where we lived. Short story time now -arrived at the furthest hospital -didn’t know what was wrong -thought I had some deadly disease -I didn’t -paralysed for 4 months -physio therapy -started walking And I still have a weak leg today thanks for reading my story.

In August 2013, I started having severe headaches on the left side of my head. I found out September 2013, I had two spots on my brain that a MRI detected and my brain was swelling. Many neurologists and neurosurgeons could not identify what the two spots were. They ran tests and decided because of the swelling, they would have to do a craniotomy to find out what the spots are on my brain. October 1, 2013, They were able to repair the AVM that was growing into my brain and causing the swelling on my left frontal lobe of my brain. I still have the AVM on my right frontal lobe because of the location and depth of it. I have suffered from seizures, headaches, two brain bleeds in the past 7 years. They do not want to remove this one unless it is absolutely necessary. Medications don’t work for the seizures or headaches. Allergic to pain killers ugh. I keep my faith and keep pushing on.

Anyone else who’s recovered from avm, did you fully recover, and if so did your memory recover? I recently had an avm in the right frontal lobe region and I was able to physically recover, thank god, but I’m worried mentally my endurance and memory will be affected permanently. Does anyone have some advice/perspective on this?

I had an AVM at age 12. Before it occurred I made some of the best grades in the school. Afterwards (and after surgery) I had a terrible short term memory, ADD, seizures, lost half my vision, had a partially paralyzed hand, and had to relearn all math from 1 plus 1. I did eventually get my undergraduate degree but this was partially from encouragement from my father, a college professor. Now although it is still a bumpy road 28 years later I try to be grateful for what I do have - my family and "friendamily".

Dear Health Team, I would like to send a recent exam done for my son to ascertain the status of his brain health after bouts of seizures . He had a decompressive craniectomy to allow for brain swelling to resolve then on the 17th of March 2020. The doctor at the time diagnosed an Arteriovenous malformation which is yet to be addressed. M What options do you feel we can follow? We are in Nigeria. Kindly give me an email or nos to reach you.
