Erika, age 18 shares, her story of recovery. After experiencing headaches and some hand and face weakness it was discovered that Erika had a large arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her brain. An AVM is a tangle of blood vessels in the brain that can bleed resulting in death or brain damage. Erika's AVM was discovered early and surgically removed but she still needed to have several weeks of rehab at Gaylord.

My best friend is in the hospital for her second AVM rupture. Her first one was in February and the effects on her speech are still showing. The surgery she had removed most of the vessels but there were a couple left over. They just ruptured. She's only 13. Edit: My friend is recovering well. She was discharged around 2 months ago and we're hoping to hang out this week.

An AVM was found after bleeding in my brain when I was 12; fortunately although I had a stroke after surgery for it and lost half my vision I did relearn to walk, speak, and through lots of work was able to finish school (my dad is also a college professor so he definitely encouraged me)!

@@jasontatume1372 I'm really sorry to hear about your brother. Did he need surgery? yea his memory suffered, especially for the first few months. He was in bad shape, like couldn't even brush his teeth, and had to relearn everything. He came around pretty good with the therapy, but it wasn't easy. He had to get determined to work hard, that's where good family support comes in. It's going to be hard on everyone for a little while man. One of the hardest things for me personally to remember is that he did have a severe issue with his brain and there's a good reason why I have to sometimes explain things a couple times. It really can be frustrating but they can't help it. The best thing you can do for him is be patient and offer encouragement. I'll say a prayer for you guys. It WILL get better. I ❤️ her story, the thing about me is mine also ruptured at 18 years old, I thought it was normal until I had to go to the hospital and they got me tested for drugs use for 24 hrs (which I didn’t use any). So then they fix the bleeding that I had which is a brain hemorrhage. They did more research and know that I had AVM, so I had to wait a couple months before doing the AVM and after I was done, I couldn’t move my right side nor legs and had to do occupational, physical and speech therapist in the hospital then at the neighbors before I was discharged. Took a few months. But now that I didn’t do any of those therapist, I’m feeling healthy, meditated, and being thankful for life. I also had to quit the college that I was going to and decided to apply nearby close to my house. Spent my birthday at the hospital in 2019 which was June 25, so 1 week before it all happened just turn 20. I ❤️ her story.

@@everjust23 Dang bro 😔, I wish you the best on your treatments dealing with it. As AVM are inborn in us, and there’s no way to avoid it. But we can avoid it by doing certain activities that doesn’t elevate our blood pressures like excessively lifting, stress, smoking etc. I hope you surpass this AVM when you had your treatments and live a long life, as I was lucky to survive this incidents. With 24 hours of me having to wait while my brain was flowing with blood until a surgeon 👨‍⚕️ found out I had a hemorrhage, and performed on me. Later after the surgery he found out I had an AVM, and had to wait a few months before I can undergo another surgery again. As my right sides of my body is completely unable to move. So I was put in a wheelchair 🦽. May you be well my friend on your treatment with it. 🙏
@everjust23
@everjust23 3 года назад
@@justko2909 thanks man. Don't mean to be insensitive but are you still paralyzed on the right side? And was that a result of the hemorrhaging or side effect of surgery. I'm unsure of what type of treatment options they will present me with.
@justko2909
@justko2909 3 года назад
@@everjust23 Don’t worry bro, I was paralyzed from the right side due to the brain hemorrhages. It took about 1-2 months of therapy to get my body used to moving before. So I had to have a wheelchair 🦽, then they move it up to the walkers, and then the cane. Took it home and used it for several more therapies and lately I been getting better bro. But for the AVM after the surgery, my body seems to be fine. Just needed to eat soft foods as I can still feel my aftereffect of the surgery. But overtime I’m able to eat hard foods now. For treatment options I think they have medications depending on your AVM symptoms causing headaches or seizures. But surgery is the most treatment for individual with brain AVMs. Which includes the surgical removal, endovascular embolization, or stereotactic radio surgery where they use radiation to aim at the AVM. Although this type of treatment is for small AVMs, or people that doesn’t have a brain hemorrhage yet. I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ bro, depending on your doctor and how he sees the AVM as. But whatever treatment it is, I wish you well bro 🙏.
