I love these and have many of them in front & back yard . They are hardy in AZ heat & cold . Some I let be natural shape and other I keep trimmed as a hedge .

Thanks for sharing this video! Crazy that they grew in such limited space. Ours have been extremely pool friendly as well. 😊

I will have to do some research to make sure it’s not toxic to our dogs and humans. Thank you for sharing.

Our bloodhound had been around our 15 hopseed bushes for the last year without any issues, if that's helpful. 😊

Nice job! Looks awesome! Do you know if they have invasive root? Have you noticed on your drive way?

About 3 years ago. They came in 3 gallon pots.

Thank you for the video! What distance did you decide on for spacing?
@TheGardenNerd

About 4 feet is what I did. I wanted it to fill in quickly.

I just got two of them some, they are small right now… how long did you wait to plant them and how long do they take to grow that tall? TY!
@TheGardenNerd
@TheGardenNerd Год назад
You can plant right away and in about 1 and a half years they should be that tall. Good luck!

How would they do in a shaded area? I live next to a park that has pine trees overhanging my property .. would love to put these in so ppl stop crossing over my property to enter/exit the park, but they would be under the trees. Also, would they do well if they get irrigation from the park system?

How much shade are we talking? I'd say if they don't get more than 5 hours of sun a day then they probably won't grow full and healthy.

These have royally frustrated me. I had the nursery plant 4 of them to create a privacy hedge in my backyard and 2 have done great, one looks very thin in sections and one completely died. I replaced the one that died and the replacement looked fine for about 9 months but now looks like it’s going to die. At the rate they are failing, I’ll never have the privacy hedge I wanted and when I replace the dead one it looks so weird to see tall mature sections with sections with much smaller ones. 🤪 I’ve lived in the same climate since 2008 and know what I’m doing. Everything else in my yard including pygmy palms, Mediterranean fan palms and red hibiscus all look fantastic. These were presented to be very low maintenance, hardy plants yet in my yard, they are a nightmare.

How do you think this bush would do in the CA high desert?

They should do great!

To get the uninterrupted hedge, how far apart should you plant them?
@TheGardenNerd

3 to 5 feet

Do you trim the hedge on both sides of the properties.
@TheGardenNerd
@TheGardenNerd 11 месяцев назад
I do when needed. But my neighbor has a service that comes each week and they usually trim it for me.

Can they be planted right along side of the fence line, maybe two or 3 feet out from the fence or what would you say?
@TheGardenNerd
@TheGardenNerd 4 месяца назад
For sure. They can fit in tight spaces like mine are planted in.

Our HOA has ban them in our neighborhood due to high fire danger. They are highly flamable.

These were supposed to be such hardy low maintenance plants but that’s not been my experience. The nursery planted 4 and one died while a second got very thin and looks horrible. The replacement for the dead one has now just died again. I hate them! 🤪

That's no good! So sorry!

Thankfully the replacement I thought was a goner is still hanging in there so there’s hope! I think part of my issue is that there is a very subtle slope in backyards leading to mine and I suspect when there is heavy rain, even though there’s no pooling, maybe some ends up by that hopseed. Who knows
