www.hardknock.tv Exclusive in-depth interview with Hopsin by Nick Huff Barili. Part 6 of this very candid interview starts with Hopsin explaining a recent tweet were he stated: "F*ck getting signed to a record label, I am the label." "People may idolize Jimmy Iovine, they may idolize people who own big labels, but Jimmy Iovine started one day as a person young as myself or younger saying I want to be part of a label. I want to own a label. I want to be able to help artists and all that...I didn't realize that at first when I used to be signed to Ruthless, I used to want to be signed and be under somebody and have a boss but then its like WHY?" Hopsin goes on to detail how his record label Funk Volume has been able to succeed as an independent and why he has turned down major labels wanting to sign him. "I build this shit organically. I learned how to rap, I talk to my fans, I'm a humble dude...I'm not having other stars co-sing me...I'm just Hopsin the guy that knows how to rap and I be online promoting myself."
As the interview continues Hopsin addresses artistic responsibility and calls out rappers and pop stars that are leading their fans to act reckless. Hopsin thinks artist should own up to their power of influence and not steer their audience, particular the youth into doing things that they will regret down the line. Hopsin also calls out Miley Cyrus and rappers constantly rapping about Molly, Twerking and Turning up.
We talked to Hopsin for more than 2 hours as he opened up about a series of topics at his home studio. Tune in next week for part 7 with Hopsin only at www.hardknock.tv

Hopsin truly is the *most passionate rapper in the hip hop industry.* Big rappers would take a lot of Hopsin's advice or material if they weren't being controlled by a label, we all know those record labels *FEAR* Hopsin because his skill is all _his_, no special writers, no special bullshit. Hopsin knows how to keep it real; keep it up Hop. And NEVER sign with no label or sell your soul!! Them lyrics are pumping straight out of your soul don't ever give it up!!

An entertainers job is to entertain. Nothing more. Eminem(Hopsin's idol) says: It's your responsibility to be a parent for your child, not his responsibility.
@CRUDEChannel1
@CRUDEChannel1 10 лет назад
***** "Wrong!" I know you are. An entertainers job is to entertain people and that's it. Anything beyond that is a courtesy not a job requirement. Nor should it be. In the case of a musician their job is too relax people's brains with their music and get asses shaking in clubs. Selling sex is optional but appropriate. Why is it appropriate? Because within the entertainment industry an entertainers job is to wait for it....ENTERTAIN PEOPLE. Twerking is legal and it entertains people, so entertainers do it. Besides music artist have VERY little influence on society. Ratchet music is at most a reflection of cultural dysfunction. Not the other way around. And I can give you modern day examples of that.
@CRUDEChannel1
@CRUDEChannel1 10 лет назад
***** Well, here in America Bloods and Crips have existed since the 60s. Before rap even came about and certainly before rap exploded into the mainstream public. So gangsters in the UK are probably just copying off of the ones in the US. Actually in an interview Nicki Minaj had in regards to one of her youngest fans(Sophia Grace) Nicki said that her music is not intended for kids to listen to it. But thanks to lack of parental guidance, peer pressure from friends/classmates, depression and immaturity kids do some of the things that Nicki raps about. Sorry, not her fault. Being a role model for your child and guiding your child to the standards you want them to have is your responsibility. Not an entertainer's. Now, I understand that with so many social pressures even great parents can be unsuccessful when trying to encourage their kids to be easy going and level-headed. But people like Nicki Minaj are called entertainers. Not entertainers/guidance counselors. For entertainers who want to be that way, then like I said, it's a courtesy. Not a job requirement.
@CRUDEChannel1
@CRUDEChannel1 10 лет назад
***** My first point was basically that you can't blame rap music for those gangs you mentioned. But of course you can blame gangs for gangster rap. Because rap music(though not all of it) is at worst a representation of cultural dysfunction. Not the other way around. You don't believe that Nicki Minaj is oblivious to the fact that her music appeals to millions youngsters? Neither do I. But it still comes back around to what I've been saying. Expressing sexuality is all part of entertainment. Nicki makes young men horny as fuck. She markets herself that way because she knows it'll make her money. So when you think about it, you can't really blame the music artist, so much as their fans who strongly support what they're doing. And then of course Hollywood execs have to poke their noses into things every now and then. What comes out of that? Movies like "Get Rich or Die Trying" and "Hustle & Flow". Those movies don't just highlight the basic art form of rapping, the lyricism and what being an emcee is about . No, those movies focus on highlighting criminals becoming rappers, thus glamorizing a link between the two. Not all rappers were thugs before becoming rappers. But movie producers don't want you to know that. It all boils down to what needs to be done to make a buck. Like with most jobs outside of the entertainment industry.
@CRUDEChannel1
@CRUDEChannel1 10 лет назад
***** As you said Socioeconomic ils are the cause of some problems. Then there are the reasons I named. Depression, peer pressure from people that you personally know, immaturity, and psychological problems which often stem from domestic abuse(whether physical or emotional). But those things have always existed. So you can't legitimately credit hip-hop as one of the driving forces behind it. Movies have helped turn gangster life into light entertainment too. As far as blacks you have race pimps like Al Sharpton who try to encourage black youth to believe that, no matter how much effort they put into being successful, they will fail because of racial discrimination. So him and people like him are probably a problem as well. Although that doesn't excuse the bigotry and racial prejudgement of people like David Duke and Bill O' Reilly. Be that as it may, in America, black murder rates(though still ridiculously high) were even worst before rap broke into the mainstream lime light. And the explosion of black illegitimate children started in the 60s along with bloods&crips. Nowadays, single black women are having less children than ever before. Married black women just cut back even more which is why the black "out of wedlock" birth rate still looks the way it does. There's many things that you can blame but the entertainment industry(especially music) is not one of em.
@CRUDEChannel1
@CRUDEChannel1 10 лет назад
***** I've never lived in a U.K ghetto but I think that British bloods and crips are copying off of American gangsters. Not American rappers who rap about being gangsters(both those who are really gangsters AND THOSE WHO AREN'T). On MTV's TRL, Eminem once said "Not everything I say, is meant to be taken so literal." And he's right. To me violent rap lyrics are no different than violent movie scenes. It's fiction. Otherwise damn near every mainstream and underground rapper would be in jail right now for multiple counts of first degree murder. From what I've seen, rap music doesn't necessarily make you feel better about being a bum. It just relaxes your brain and temporarily takes your mind off of your personal problems. Like other forms of entertainment do. And as someone who grew up in inner city Baltimore I've seen first hand what the real reasons behind people "fucking up"(as Hopsin puts it) are. My aunt was an alcoholic for years. She was depressed because she was a lower-class diabetic and failed to get into the career she wanted. Then she had to put further attempts on hold to take care of my grandma. She had quit drinking eventually but not before she damaged her liver. She died from cancer October 2009. Like many people who are in their 50s my aunt didn't care for rap music. So it's pretty obvious to me that it played no part in her drinking problems. Before that I had a teenage neighbor/good acquaintance who sold crack. Not because "it's cool" but cause he was trying to keep himself, his brothers and mom from getting evicted. What I'm getting at here, is that there are millions of people like this throughout the world, as there has been for many decades. People don't really fulfill stereotypes(racial or otherwise) because it's cool, they fulfill them because, it's how they choose to deal with their problems. That's not the fault of any music artist. They should not feel the responsible for shit that they're not the cause of. If they do it's a courtesy. I'm sorry but that's just how me and people like me see it.

Independent artists like Hopsin really inspire me to do this music business myself, just from using these tools like social media, on the internet and putting your mind to it, like what Hop said, is more than enough to gain your own success. I use to be in Hopsin's position when I first started out, I was under a label, yet it didn't go as planned. So I dropped from it and will now forever remain independent. There are so many resources about marketing/promoting yourself on the internet, it's awesome.
@APWestMusic
@APWestMusic 10 лет назад
And just putting this out there. The Jokerr, an entertainer who's friends with Hopsin, is another inspiring artist to look at when taking this independent route. On his Facebook, he makes statuses for artists/producers that are wanting to be in the music industry, by, you know, taking the independent route. Mostly everything is going online now. The internet is where it's at! So for any artist out there wanting a record deal, why? You've got the internet with all this valuable information and resources, you can easily do this stuff yourself. But no doubt there will be a long process to get to where you want.

trilla dilla That has everything to do with it. It's all connected.

@kristiansndergaard6668
@kristiansndergaard6668 10 лет назад
KingPinniped Toastysock has a point. I may avoid playing certain tracks when I have certain passengers in my car or I'm at a party. This is because I seek to play what most can enjoy listening to. I like Hopsin, but I also like Bon Jovi, Pendulum, John Legend and even Danny Brown. I've once been a one kind of music type of guy and it was boring as fuck around other people because people always whined about what you listened to and I whined about their mainstream crap. I'd rather play something that they may not know but they may like instead. I'd never play a song that I disliked to fit in socially though. I'm almost sure that trilla dilla meant something like that aswell. Don't tell me though that you don't act different around different people. with one friend I may share a lot of personal things with while with another friend I may just want to fool around and have fun... it depends on relationships. With total strangers I'll just try to figure out what part of myself I want to express towards them. It's just not as simple as saying always be yourself because oneself may be a lot of things and not necessarily at the same time.

If you hating on hopsin then idk I have to question your sense of direction in perspective, because this man covers literally EVERYTHING , in this video...listen to the words and watch the ENTIRE VIDEO like i did before commenting..he doesn't smoke, drink, etc. he makes the realist music out there and mentioning macklemore is a plus because both #Hopsin , and #macklemor are independent , and you have to respect that ..>>>>>>>>but everyone is entitled to their opinion so yeah idk like if you agree..

Hopsin is as real as it gets, he is mature and all of his songs contains a message, he never raps about weed/drugs money or girls. This is what all rappers should be like and its sad to see other fake rappers destroy the new generation

What's good way to get ahold of Hopsin? I would really like to talk to him about something important if possible. It's important me at least. And it seems I have everything he named he wants to look for. I've rapped for 6 years now. Since 13 years old. I haven't posted vids yet, but that's because I made this giant plan organized of what needs to be done first. I've been writing songs for years. And I can freestyle. There's so much more, but I'd rather discuss it with him. Thank you for you time
@BigPaz32

Try to write him a private message on his fb page. Or sometimes he does chats with his fans when he isn't on tour, and there you can ask him anything you want

tbh i was a big fan of hopsin and i thought he can bring back hip hop. but now that i think of it. no one fucking can. it gotten so low that nobody can bring back the old beats and the sick flow that tupac, biggie, and n.w.a. used to have. it's all gone. and i will admit he is real but there too many bad fake rappers out there more than real ones. so from my opinion hip hop will never be what it used to be anymore.
@Trudon

bring hip-hop back from what? hip-hop never died. great hip-hop music still exists. mainly from underground mc's.

trudon the thing is is that you don't. you never lived through it. you never experienced the song when it came out. what they did for the world. now hip hop went from the fucking retarded people are famous and some are good in underground. there used to be everyone making a change and keeping hip hop up and once fucking people like 2 chainz and shit came around now its garbage. its all fucking shit

I'd say he's one of the most real artists because he's real as a person, doesn't try to hide his weaknesses or defects, he incourages people to be themselves, and that's what the concept of inspiration personally means to me... People should really look up to this dude.

+Cesar JDM Ledezma See, people always say they "already knew" not to do stupid shit, like getting drunk and setting off fireworks in their back yard. But, next thing they know, their house is on fire. There's a difference between what you "know" and what you understand.

It's a struggle to make it I've been making music since 2008 and been grinding ever since. I take Constructive criticism and talk to fans. I just release a song call It's Time and all I want is someone to listen it has a good flow, lyrics, meaning and quality. If you leave feedback I respond (Unless it's negative).
