The only other thing I'd love to see randomized are the arenas, while keeping a similar wave structure. That said, if they're gonna add new encounters, they shouldn't delete the past ones, but rather just add them into another randomization system where it cycles through every encounter on start-up to keep things fresh.
@@digivagrant I do think random weapon pickups are a good addition. Horde mode is meant to test you beyond master levels because on top of adding more demons into the fray they take away the weapons you're good/comfortable with. Id is forcing you out of your comfort zone and ordering you to come out on top. Will that mean it will be everyone's cup of tea? No. But it's meant as a challenge for players who want that challenge.
Yeah, I was really hoping to have the huge Super Gore Nest area where the three gore keys are inserted. It seemed like a no-brainer, but it didn't come in.
@@ciscokidd999 maybe but that'd be a gameplay adjustment. I'm just pointing out a flaw in one of their recently updated features. The rest of the HUD is visible during chainsaw and GKs so it's definitely info they want visible at all times
I tried Horde Mode last Friday, all I am going to say is that it is great and when I overcame what I thought was the final fight in the last wave of Round 5 in The Holt. I was horribly mistaken, and Killed!
My "fix" to those unhappy with the random weapons is, that at the end of every level, you can "buy" weapons, sacrificing the points you've earned to increase your rank. If you don't, you get one random, if you do, good luck getting those points back, specially if you keep spending them
Hm. I think I like that solution. Maybe it shouldn't be points but anothee currency like weapon points. Buying weapons instead of the weapon roulette could be a cool option for those who want it.
I know there is some contention on the randomized weapons in horde with the more hardcore player base but the randomization adds so much to the gameplay for me. Having a limited arsenal of a variety of combinations in the early stages is exciting, as I learn the best way to overcome the odds with what I have. I think best remedy for the competitive audience would be a separate mode that has a specific weapon progression. Glad they broke up the horde arenas with blitz and traversal arenas, they are great as well. The whole arcadey structure and everything was great I am thoroughly enjoying horde alongside the other additions and content to the game in this update. Great video!
The only thing I'd say about the randomized weapons is to perhaps start off with two guns instead of one. Playing the Mars Core master level on classic mode really showed me that you can have fun and a challenge with only two guns. Still tho, I agree with your point about giving more gameplay experiences.
randomized weapons are incredibly frustrating if you are pushing for a high score on leaderboard and there should be an option to toggle a set weapon progression indeed. otherwise randomized weapons are fine for casuals and people that aren't as competitive
I absolutely love the challenge it brought. I've been able to place #9 in the global leaderboards for nightmare. And I've played on an Xbox one s lol. I haven't played for 2 days so I might have dropped off.
It's interesting on how right you are on the randomness, and that it forces you out of your comfort zone Ran Lock On throughout base game + DLCs, and through UN as well. But in horde mode, when you only have a combat shotgun and a RL, how are you going to take on a pinky swarm? Lock on won't help, but remote det falters? Start learning just how sweet they can be!
The problem with the score system is not about randomness of weapons but minmaxing around x4 sphere and knowing of the most valuable (per time to kill) demons of that specific set of waves. And there is no score for the style - swapping, midair kills, quickscopes, week points etc.
The first bit isn’t an issue, that’s just how you build score. As for style I could see that possibly being an implementation but the game already does enough to encourage you to build up score with multipliers and blitz mode and preserving lives and what not. So not really an issue, just a solid idea to add to the overall package
For horde mode, the final battle was friggin intense. Especially with the bonus waves. Definitely the hardest thing in doom eternal, I was on ultra violence.
I got to the last wave on The Holt on Nightmare with 12 lives. Got absolutely FUCKED with the possesed Marauder and another normal one at the same time 😟
The controller changes are nice but I really wish they'd add M&K support for console. It's been a while since I've played but I'll redownload for horde and the DLC master level, sounds fun
@@moonlightostrich3690 I have to strongly disagree. For doom Eternal on PC the skill gap is much higher due to the precision of a mouse. Using eight fingers instead of four (5 for the keyboard) (3 for the mouse)....being able to aim and shoot at the same time on the default control scheme. And having access to way more key binds. The best doom eternal console players would likely be the bottom tier of top level players on PC
Horde mode is great. The first run, I had the ssg as my first earned weapon, which made a for a great time moving forward. My second run, I got the rocket launcher first, then the chaingun. Trying to adapt with what I was given has already made me better at the game. I went thru TAG1 and didn't lose a single life just because I learned how to use everything in my arsenal, which made every arena fight so much more manageable.
Well I now have plans for the next 27 minutes. Ps: The dread knight is the most overpowered demon (berserk mode literally kills the slayer in 2 seconds).
My love for gaming died months ago. But seeing the patch release, and this video appreciating the Dev's work and effort while the community stays positive made me smile. This game began as a demon killer fps, and overtime it's evolved into a single player competitive playground with every player having their own unique playstyle. I'm loving it all, keep up the work. And again Thank you for your hard work.
22:55 I wasn't expecting new levels. I was expecting Battlemode Maps to be used so that I could officially experience them since I don't want to bother with the multiplayer.
Even though I played through the campaign multiple times in Nightmare, my preferred difficulty is UV. And playing the Horde Mode turned out to be great fun in Hurt Me Plenty.
Ever since the update dropped, I've felt like the flow of gameplay has improved quite a bit. I feel like I'm getting more out of the game than I did before and it's great.
My first run gave me the plasma rifle last. I have never felt more fear for possessed demons than I did then. It's funny that you mention that you swap weapon mods more, because that''s exactly what I found myself doing, switching weapon mods in the early stages because I need to make up for my lack of weapons somehow. It's amazing.
I guess it didn't affect me that much since I tend to save possessed demons for last. And they seemed to tweak spirits for Horde Mode so that they don't possess fodder.
Dread Knights are really fun to play as, it has its highs and its lows because it mostly gets its strength out of using berserk. It can at times feel OP against a slayer but any slayer who can remain near a portal and knows how to ballista boost to get movement away from him can escape the berserk assault.
One thing I would’ve liked to see in 6.66 would be an extra mode in horde mode with all weapons unlocked from the start but there’s a RIDICULOUS amount of demons in the arena and it’s endless. I’ve found myself using weapons I don’t usually use in the campaign because of horde mode. Great update
Thank you for advocating such a healthy community mindset. I appreciate how you speak respectfully to the top-tier players while still looking out for the 99%. Great video as always Mayo!
14:30 I thought of something similar. What if it spawns two weapons randomly at the end and you have to choose one to take? It gives more player control but keeps most of the random nature. I personally like it as is.
i really think horde mode needs more systems to earn points with. as of right now the only ways you can maximize your score is timing the multiplier boosts and not using the bfg. i think some more stuff granting you bonus points for killing a lot of demons at once , killing a superheavy soon after it spawns, etc would make the battle for a high score a lot more fleshed out and fun.
I like the randomness. It's awesome. Because that means I have to use guns I usually don't. As long as they fix the weapon wheel. That my edited version can be used. All I dislike is that we can't erase spirits.
I played horde mode when it came out. Made it to the last mission on Nightmare first try and took a break. Played it last night, I went into the last arena with 14 lives. I died on the last wave. That difficulty spike is sharp. Edit: Also, I really want to like Battlemode. Back at launch when everyone was the same skill, it was really fun. But for a long time there are so many UN players in battlemode that casual players like me still don't want to play it. When they said they would "add ranking" I thought they meant they are adding a ranked mode so those ultra-competitive players won't be in the same pool as the fans who just want to grind cosmetics or just have some fun. What they added was a grindy cosmetic series. Just about all of the "changes" to battlemode are putting band-aids on fundamental issues with the mode. They now hide player tags so players don't leave when they see a UN player. Instead of actually fixing WHY we leave. Also the dread knight is so OP right now, that when a player uses it people leave anyway. So we are at the exact same place as before. They are dealing with low player population for battlemode, so the add a (Sadly timed) series with new cosmetics. And a streak system. But if your mode already has a player retention problem, then just adding a grindy XP series onto a mode I don't want to play, doesn't make me want to go back because the rewards for a casual player like me, is unrealistic. It's like every part of the game is made to be fun for master players and casual EXCEPT battlemode. Battlemode is masters only, but even then the masters stay with singleplayer and the master levels. And the few times I loaf up the mode, something I used to use is gone. They want skillful players, but take away mods that funnel you into certain playstyles rather than building your own skill. I used to use the destroyer blade on jump pads. It took timing and precision. That wad removed. Same with the minigun shield. So if this "battlemode 2.0" overhaul is made to 1. Bring back players who were alienated by the difficulty spike like me 2. Keep the few players that are still there 3. Reward players that will play battlemode from now to the future Then it failed because it didn't actually fix the reasons why I and many others refuse to play the mode. To me, this isn't worth a "2.0" moniker. As if it is some sort of major revival of the mode. But it just goes back to the core issues. So, if ID sees this, here is my list of actual fixes to battlemode. 1. Separate the gamemode into casual and competitive 2. Lower the series reward requirements or increase match-to-match XP. 3. Add a practice mode with bots so players can learn the demons like we learned the slayer. 4. Add the shield and destroyer blade back into casual, at least. Until they address these issues properly, I'm not touching battlemode at all. I drop in every so often hoping they shadow-fixed it, but if "battlemode 2.0" didn't actually fix the mode, then I'm done. I'll just stick to horde mode and master levels. I just wanted to play all of my favorite game instead of ignoring a mode. And until they add demon skins to singleplayer, I'll just let those cool skins collect digital dust.
Oh, yes. The fact they removed the ability to see upcoming Battlemode player's Doom Level rankings while also adding limited-time cosmetics AND that whole "Hot Streak" system was just downright mean. There's way too much luck involved for something with such a small window of time. There's no way I can get all these "Hot Streak" cosmetics with all the Ultra-Nightmare players running around when I can't identify them until it's too late. And backing out of a fight counts against your Hot Streak. They said they keep Doom Levels hidden to keep people from backing out of matches, but they never seemed to ask themselves WHY players do that. (It's 'cause there's no system in place to group people by skill!) So, they just made the situation EVEN WORSE. If there were no "Hot Streaks" or we could still see other players' Doom Levels in the lobby, I wouldn't have much of an issue. But putting both of these together is downright unfavorable.
@@Boltboy-kh7yw Thanks. I still feel most of this. I'm hoping the ranking system ironed out some of the skill pool, but I doubt it. What really sucks is the immoran gun skins look awesome, red is my favorite color, but the gamemode is pretty much the same, so I can only let those skins pass. I'll buy them if a cosmetic pack is released instead.
I'm super glad they added horde mode. I haven't played in forever and I actually suck rn, horde mode helps me familiarize myself with weapons and forced me to survive ob very little, making the game challenging and helpingbm learn how to fully utilize my weapon wheel. To anyone who's annoyed by it, you need to suck it up and get better. Doom Eternal gives you the tools to help make you better. Use them.
Want a button for both grenades? I have a fix but it's a bit convoluted. U can make a macro, useing the program autohotkey, to make a single keystroke, let's say h, become h>e>h. It's not perfect and it requires some setup but it is functional.
My gripe with Horde Mode is that I think the waves should be randomized as well, not just the weapons. It wouldn't need to be procedural waves with infinite possibilities, just two or three variations of each round would already be great for replayability. Because right now I feel this is more similar to a master-ish level than an actual mode made to be played over and over
I understand what you're saying, but you need to keep in mind that this was never planned from the beginning and is just something they come up with after the fact. Also, this is all free content, let's try to not bite the hand the feeds ok.
I love all of the fights in horde mode, but I would change the scoring system for the combat arenas to not be so all-or-nothing on the power ups. I’d prefer if a larger bonus went to clear times and lack of deaths, which I think would emphasize overall efficiency in random situations, rather than just trying to be super efficient for a couple of seconds with stacking buffs.
I had to fight through the first two levels without ballista and pb, it was a rush trying to use blood punch and heat blast for weak point and also sticky bombs
This mode is amazing and has so much potential. I think there’s some additions to it I’d love to see, namely customization. I’d like to do a traditional wave-based endless horde mode. Overall love Horde, LOVE Battlemode 2.0 and I super love Dreadknight. A bit of advice for my console homies, bind the Super Shotgun to your L3 so you can quickly switch and meathook away when you’re cornered. Helps against Dread’s beserk in BM and is also so nice in general gameplay. That little taste of PC action I had going from Precision to Ballista to SSG was amazing.
The random weapons make horde mode very fun and replayable though even I an ultra-violence noob slayer think sometimes it sucks when you dont get the weapon you want. Also I will say the last encounters in The Holt are insane, possessed marauder, double possesed Barons with a marauder, triple arch-viles,
It was actually super fun that i got the plasma rifle first, spamming heat blast for weapons and full auto to unload is something i didn't think would be so amazingly fun
Hell yes! Only heat blast? Full utilization of heat blast. Faltering, using either of the 3 stages of the blast, planning on who to spend the red plasma on after the big blast etc. So much more fun than quick switching. Heck, more fun than just switching regularly! And convenient to control. Or super shotgun with all of the reload animation, and fill the gaps with grenades and blood punch. I started trying to limit myself on my own lately, and horde mode made me try more things!
@@theodorealenas3171 I always unload on a super heavy with plasma volley until the heat is fully charged then i use this combo Rocket Falter>Rocket direct hit> ssg> ballista> heat blast>ssg> heat blast charged projectiles Grenades in between helps and this combo is especially fun on barons
The first time I played Horde mode I legit had the default weapon line up of combat shotgun-heavy cannon-plasma rifle-rocket launcher etc, and thought it was normal, then I tried again and got the ballista and was so confused lol. I personally love the randomization of the weapons for the same reason I love cod zombies or the original Resident Evil 3, each retry of the game is different in strategy depending on what it provides for you to utilize and improvise. It’s honestly one of the best mechanics for a game dev to use for replayability and a curse for speedruners rip
1:34 didnt hugo confirm we will never get a seperate ice bomb bind? 3:42 whats so bad with the fight being optional? If you want to fight demons, fight demons, if not just skip it. Rerolling is a bad idea because the player might roll an even worse option on his second go. They could just roll 2 weapons at the same time and you simply choose 1.
Tbh the best way to appease the speedrunner category of players is to make a separate category of horde mode that let's you choose guns and has it's own separate leaderboards focused on raw skill
The dread knight is really good, he is also considered to some extent broken. The berserk ability he has can kill a full health full armor slayer in like 3 seconds. While it informs you of it, it feels that its abit broken. The range of it, makes running away to avoid him almost impossible
The dread knight has a big learning curve. Most people have not played enough battlemode to understand how to counter him. there is a bug currently where if one demon is down the beserk can sometimes do double damage. you can avoid his beserk with movement tech with ballista and meathook or you can use s or just portal/jumppad away from him.
I think the only questionable part of Horde Mode's randomization is that the Meathook is stuck on the Super Shotgun, so until you get it your movement options are crippled purely by chance. On my first playthrough I only got the Super Shotgun near the end of Reclaimed Earth. Makes me wonder how DOOM Eternal would be if the Meathook was its own individual ability like the hooks in games like ULTRAKILL or Necromunda. Otherwise, I agree with pretty much everything you said. The randomization does exactly what you say: it forces the player to improvise and get out of the comfort zone.
At 1:30 when you make the statement of requiring a seperate bind for frost and frag grenade. I know It’s a nitpick but VEGA specifically says in the Campaign you will be required to manually toggle the grenades. I do understand the reasoning though for smoother gameplay
0:15 *_"Console players will now be able to have a much better experience and see what it's like to truly play this game."_* Elitism aside, these options get maybe 3 binds for combos over the two you get with just tapping for the previous weapon, 5 if you really want to cut out the crucible and wheel. Nice addition, but It's not really earth shattering. The only option console players have to quickswap between all 8 weapons freely is the wheel, and id Software keeps that gimped by forcing a delay on it.
I absolutely love playing Horde Mode, and because of the randomness of the weapon rolls, it gave me a newfound appreciation for weapons I did not use frequently. First run, got the Plasma Rife, and I cannot tell you how much I used the gun, especially Microwave Beam. Even at the very end of the Holt, I consistently used the MB to nullify superheavys. Horde Mode has made me a better player because of it forcing me out of my comfort zone, and experimenting with the resources provided. I have not had this much fun with Eternal since TAG 1!
I think a good comparison for why the randomized weapon system works well is just imagine if CoD zombies gave you the ray gun ever first hit on the box
Hey man i love your content, you are the first doom content creator that that i watched since i bought DOOM ETERNAL upon release. You taught me not to give up on a game like this and now it's my favorite game ever
I glad they give you fully upgrade weapons, because my main strat is just spam the grenade launcher mod on shotgun to win, unless I need the plasma gun for the spirits
Honestly I just assumed Remote Det wasn't working because it just didn't have a chance of working, not because it was bugged. Will have to use it more often now.
Playing on cultist base, fighting doom hunters and blood maykrs with all of the upgrades, runes and suit perks but with the only weapon being the combat shotgun is the one of the most fun things in this game.
My first horse mode run gave me a bunch of spray weapons first, so I couldn’t just SSG/PB everything. Made me really uncomfortable but holy crap was it SO FUN. That’s kinda where I land now with Doom - I don’t care about playing on Nightmare all the time, because there’s enough challenge on lower difficulties for both Horde mode and the master levels that I’m not going to get tired of either anytime soon
It was a massive pain in the ass when I didnt have a plasma gun on the spirits, it went from pain elemental to marauder with a blood mayker slowing me down
10:16 I was surprised to see that mods don't lock you out of Horde Mode like they do for Battle Mode. Mods should at least lock you out of the leader boards.
Leaderboard hackers are not using mods as you know them. They use code injectors and memory modifiers to alter the game and either find a method to achieve top score within a button press or simply tell the server a number and convince it to believe them. The latter was 2016's problem and it seems the former is currently Eternal's problem.
On my first horde mode playthrough i aldo got the plasma rifle at the end. And it msde me use spirits as a warning. And it made me set up spirits so they possess a zombie and i could leave them for the end.
"if you make it through horde mode and think it's too easy, you're not playing it right. the whole point of the mode is to get you into an arcade scoring system, and if you engage in that system, it's really hard" - person who only played ultrakill with pistol charge shot only and said it wasn't encouraging him when it had essentially the exact same thing
Typical ultrakill moron, comparing a free DLC optional game mode of a game that ALREADY got you into the fun zone, to an entire campaign of a game that fails to get you into it's fun zone for an entire first act.
The one thing they haven’t fixed in the update is the stupid bug on the ps5 version where a cyber mancubas does a green pool attack and it locks up the R2 and L2 button with the adaptive triggers even when I turn off the settings for adaptive triggers. And it also happens randomly while playing for no reason.
There's just a intense feeling you get when you're just cruising along and after a series of mistakes, you start to realize that you're fucked if you don't do something. Like ultra nightmare is one thing but the entire time you just feel on edge, I like the feeling of being punished with increasing danger for your mistakes rather than the danger always bring present. That's how horde mode makes me feel. It's like suddenly the music, the visuals, everything feels so much more real because the game is making you care a whole lot more now about playing it the way it wants.
Ya know,Speaking of Horde mode and How everything in said mode. Have you ever thought about trying out The Bloody Palace from the DMC games ?. Would love to hear your thoughts on that,Critical or other wise cus I have a feeling you'll definitely enjoy it regardless since the works just as similar where the more stylish you are the better you scores are and the top most players are filled with super talent players.
The controller button changes are awesome, but theyre overshadowed by the fact that the weapon wheel still doesnt allow you to remove the BFG/Unmakyr. Im still accidentally choosing the BFG when i meant to use the rockets.
I recently went in to horde mode and beat it on Nightmare. Since I have not played TAG 1 or 2 it was a fucking journey. The final arena had me on my toes the entire time. You can really stack extra lives making it fairly easy. All in all very fun.
