Agreed, machines like the Tremortusk have such fascinating animations, but it’s sad you can’t observe it while it’s choosing missiles at you, good thing we have this reel

That’s the hardest part.. there is a balance between fluidity and machine feeling that needs to be right for these things to work

To be respectful, i believe they would only be allowed to show off the animations of the rest of the new machines if they were the one to animate said machines. Yeah.. we made a custom lighting level just for the reels, so all animators could have a unified look as well as a clean presentation to show off the animations without extra distraction..

Check out the gdc talk i did called “bringing life to the machines of horizon zero dawn”.. it’s free on you tube! Gives a lot of insight how we did it

Procedural animation cannot make this kind of complicated movement. If there is any procedural animation in the game, it will likely just be, say, telling the feet where to connect to the terrain. While procedural animation absolutely can be used to make organic looking creatures with no human made animation, that's usually only possible in very specific art styles that tend to be much less detailed (Example: Rainworld)
