Brian Phillips I agree with just taping some flaps at maybe 10 degrees. On on (uncontrollable ) HK A150 (cheap 747) I hot glued my flaps at 10 degrees and it will high alpha now.

Great job Brian. If HH had added flaps and optional leading edge slats and poss retracts, I would have bought this and gotten into spectrum for sure. As it is I'm still with taranis and opentx. Be careful! If you bind ONE to DSMX and the OTHER to DSM2 you will have wierd things happen!!! I only know because it happened to me in the Cessna Project. I had to use BOTH DSMX or BOTH DSM2. Also, you'll have the same Exact issue since Channel 6 IS used on this plane. If you're replacing the WHOLE brick, you'll be fine, but no SAFE and AS3X.

Had to try to watch this, have a 1/2 hour free, HH looking towards a version 2 yet? Lol.. Matt Andren made a nice CRJ 200 regional jet w/flaps and trail link main gear few years back..led to the nice Cessna.. I use the RATE adjustment to control SAFE limits, up to 90°.. if it works w/the Rx .. good for locking 30/45/90° angle in turns or locking in flare angle of attack limit for landing, good to learn how to use, good for sharing w/new pilot so they can't dive/baloon-stall.. fun flying "raw" & using SAFE @ times to augment precision/smoothness 😎👍
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
Pump the breaks....you set the bank and angle limits on your Tx!??!?! HOW??!?! I NEED TO KNOW!!!
@francisconti9085
@francisconti9085 4 года назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC yes, we all do! This has worked on my origional model Timber, Commander MPD, Sportsman S+, etc planes with SAFE..on my old Spektrum Dx7 I have dual rates for Elev on left, Ail on right.. in the menu when you set up the RATE pos 0/1, the RATE you select alters the limit angle.. I don't know for certain off the top of my head right now away from the radio, but I think 60% gives me 45° bank limit, 100% gives me 90° bank limit..with 3 pos sw you could get an intermediate angle.. like 30, 45, 90°, or limit it further for "overcontrol limiting" during training on slower planes so student isn't whipping the plane all over while learning orientation with a wide holding pattern w/less sink vs a tight one..saving power. Elev is great for "locked" climbout angle of choice, or flare attitude lock, plane won't exceed the angle, can be useful in high alpha maneuvers in the same way, but throttle inputs will actuate more positive Elev(climb) so you have to learn the points of Thro/Elev mix, but cool system when you exploit it! Let me know how it turns out for you
@francisconti9085
@francisconti9085 4 года назад
If it works the same for you, it opens up a lot more control.. ESPECIALLY "YEARNING TO TURN" IN FAST FLIGHT in safe mode, counters all the complaints ..😎👍

I'd have found a workaround to put both SAFE & FLAPS on same channel...So SAFE on meant SAFE on & Full flaps Coz u need both safe & flaps for level flight only
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
No. I use flaps ALL the time. I agree that many would like them to be on at the same time, but I'm not that person. Keep in mind, limited Bank and Pitch angles with SAFE on. This will make WIDE turns and possibility of running into stuff on approach or takeoff. I definitely didn't leave that stone UN-turned ;)
@Jack-gy7cs
@Jack-gy7cs 4 года назад
Nice work, Brian and camera crew. :) On the Carbon Cub S+, it comes with flaps that just need to be cut loose. The only thing I had to buy was the recommended servo for about $15. The installation was straight forward. I haven't even flown the plane yet, waiting for more experience on the small UMX planes that I don't mind crashing so much as not much damage occurs. I've been watching some of your older videos and see some really cool planes that are no longer in production from HH, but yet that stupid worthless little Duet is still being produced. I bought that as my first plane and hated it because flying it in any breeze was just too much for a beginner like me to handle. Now with a little more experience from the Mini Mustang P-51D I still think the Duet is a piece of crap. So why do they stop manufacturing the cool planes and keep on with junk like the Duet? Just venting here....sorry. Keep the videos coming, I love them.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
Jack Mills - totally agree, why discontinue awesome planes like the Conscendo Advanced, only to keep turds like the Duet??? Well, it's because they can sell a Duet for $60 or so RTF....and that's a price point that sells ;( That being said, I agree with your irritation... I had forgotten the flaps were already prepared, only requiring a plug be pulled and one 9g servo installed. If I review that plane, I'll get a servo and put in the flaps ASAP!!!!! All STOL planes deserve flaps ;)
@Jack-gy7cs
@Jack-gy7cs 4 года назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC I forgot the GPS can be turned off at any time, even while flying, simply by holding the bind button and cycling the flight mode switch 3 times. It cannot be turned back on until landing and unplugging the battery.

Brian , I have completed all the the transmitter setup and am ready to try the citation. When not in safe mode the flaps work fine and go to the flaps up position. The elevator is also working with down being added when flaps are deployed. But in safe mode I am getting the flaps to be close in position to my take of position. Do you see the same thing? I have watched the video several times and never see if that is what you are getting... I know the flaps in safe mode are tied to the rudder channel , is this causing the rudder travel to be in the center of it's travel,or take off flap position? Just wanted to check before I try to fly it. Thanks
@BrianPhillipsRC

You might need to try to separate the 7th channel from the flap switch. I had some issues with this when I tried to recreate this for a flight just the other day NOW using my NX8...but my first setup was DX18 Gen1 - very different!!!! Brian, I just completed my conversion of flaps also on the citation but I purchased the parts,servos,pushrods,control horns from horizon. I found that the AS6410NBL receiver is programable and you can turn on channel 5 or change rev. aileron channel to 6. I have tried this on the citation's receiver but no luck so far. Horizon states that it is programable in the citition info. Have you tried or found out anything else? It would be great to get it to work correctly,or use your method with no rudder,or I have a way now to set the flap position then unplug them from the receiver. There has to be a way to program it. I put spoilers on my night radian and went into the 636 rec. and turn on the channel they had turned off. If a person could talk to the right person at horizon I know it could be done. It seems very hard to get the very techincal questions answered like ,I want to put two avian esc in a twin engine ec-1500 but how do you program both in the same plane or how on the transmitter. Still have not gotten a response from them.... Thanks for your time,Ralph I wish I could send you a picture of how my mod looks....
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Twin Avians - watch my A-10 Thunderbolt V2 series and see what we did...the ESC are programmed SEPARATELY, then put on one channel... Avian ESC Programmer bit.ly/3FU73lY As for programming the AS6410NBL - I can't speak to it. Never done it. When we did this plane, we were JUUUUUST breaking the surface of forward programming, and didn't even really understand what we had YET...so maybe there's another way [now]? I try to use the UMX planes stock(ish) anymore, but want flaps so bad on this plane. With my mods and rudder, I love the way this plane flies, but to be fair, it flew good before...not it's GREAT!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
As for asking Horizon Hobby about "unlocking" Rx'es - I've been working on that the whole time we've been with them. We are making some headway. Jason, my primary contact, is very responsive to our needs as pilots, and LOVES this stuff as much or more than me, so he's been a huge help in these areas. We recently worked together (Well, with some prompting from me, and probably others) to get the T-28 nose gear bogey available as a stand alone item...this and lowering the price of the whole set too ;) These are small issues, I realize, but when you LOVE plane, you want to remove the holdups for people that are reluctant to get them!

Not that I could figure out. These UMX Bricks are locked down, but even if you could, you'd see that the outboard flapperons work poorly in these swept wing applications, at least as compared to inboard flaps.

@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
I wanted so badly to do this exactly, but it's the loss of discrete channel that causes the loss of the rudder axis...therefore, you could, but then you could just add flaps to that "top" channel and avoid losing the rudder in the first place.

Why not transfer the UMX carbon Cub's electronics to the Citation? Just a thought without thinking, lol
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
There isn't another HH UMX plane that will work for this. The UMX CC has the right number of channels, but you can't use the same channel for two features :) Also, the Carbon Cub had integral servos, if I recall, IE you'll have a larger, heavier PCB to fit in an already tight space. I don't think you could do it without figuring a way around SAFE, as I believe you'll be controlling AUX1 for Flaps on the Carbon Cub SS UMX. What needs to happen - Horizon Hobby needs to leave a SPARE channel, and fix the TWO channel pseudo "lock down" created by the SAFE channel. When AUX 1 isn't at -100% SAFE will not actuate, thus tying up TWO channels! With SAFE Select, you should be able to control on/off from ONE channel, but there isn't a way to bind SAFE controls to a different channel on UMX's (that I've figured out). There's a way to do it, but Horizon Hobby has made an awesome plane here, and we get to reverse engineer out these "bugs" that get in our way of full enjoyment. It's unfortunate, but I can't do any better myself, for the moment ;) P.S. Please do share when you figure out a work around. Not just an idea - actually do it. It's a lot harder to get it to work, that it seems ;)

it seems you have a good understanding of safe. ironically it’s cost me two planes. i really just hate safe and never want another plane with it. my question is what went wrong so that you could not turn it off in flight as i have had the same issue

AUX1 needs to be -100 position. You'll have to watch the whole video to get the full explanation. I DO talk about it in some detail, It's about half way through, or so. Also, I get your frustration about SAFE, but what I can tell you...back before SAFE, it was so much harder to learn to fly...double edged sward, right???

I totally agree, but here we are ;( SAFE has is drawbacks. One of them is the fact that Horizon Hobby wants to make the planes fly with their lower channel count Transmitters, THUS, we lose access to these channels as they get locked in for SAFE controls. When I was learning to fly, I would have LOVED having SAFE on these planes, but now that I don't need SAFE, it does come at a cost...and the cost is that these lower assigned channels, that happen to be tied to the physical channels...are being consumed for SAFE :(...

Hi Brian. I would really like to hear your views on the Carbon cub s+ vs. The Apprentice.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 4 года назад
Well, first of all, full disclosure, I HAVE the Apprentice 1.5m, and love it. I don't have the Carbon Cub S+ BUT I've flown it. Thoughts - Apprentice is AWESOME, but be careful you've got it on the wheels when you flip the power switch, or you'll be picking up the pieces off your neighbors roof (LOL - ask me why I know - LOL), as for the Carbon Cub S+...it's awesome, but needs to be way easier to get going for a beginner. The plane is EASY to fly, but it's HARD to setup. The GPS Plus initiation is totally ridiculous. If you can successfully get it flying, which is tough in and of itself, even with years of experience in a steep learning curve hobby, it'll about make you crap you pants the first time you hit the arbitrary GEO Fence!!! This feature has gotta be the stupidest and most error prone feature ever stuffed into a beginner plane second only to the "horizon sensors" that predated SAFE, and didn't work - LOL. I understand the feature conceptually, and as a beginner I would have be TRICKED into thinking it's the cat's meow, when really it'll just freak you out as a beginner, and get you totally and utterly disoriented at the worst possible time...if they wanted it to work, they would have had to set the geofence to way larger, like 2000 feet, or 1000 feet....as it stands, I believe it's 500 feet - not enough room! Now that I've spend a paragraph beating up the expensive feature...it flies like a dream, and it's a beauty! WHY does it NOT have flaps?!?! Both planes, I could make the same argument...but the apprentice doesn't NEED them, and comes with a spare channel (I THINK the Carbon Cub S+ does too, but I can't confirm that). Maybe I need to get a Carbon Cub S+ to show how to run it....but I might lose interest and send the GPS up with a firework ;) Hope this helps! Good luck Glen!

Brian Phillips Thanks for the quick response on the Carbon Cub S3 vs. The Apprentice. Let me take this a step further. I’m an intermediate flier who hasn’t flown for the last 3 years and wants to get back into it,, I own 3 planes that (if I’m being honest) are probably above my experience level and I want to get them sold and replaced with planes I can comfortably handle. I’m in a wheelchair and don’t have a lot of arm movement but relatively good hand movement. I recently purchased the Turbo Timbre which I believe I’ll be able to handle but I’d like to clean out my planes and replace them with 2 others that will be more within my experience level. I have 3 years experience and then a 3 year layoff. Can you suggest some good choices besides my Turbo Timbre. I like the look of the Beaver with floats and a good UMX. Can you give me some suggestions or thoughts.

@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Talk to Horizon Hobby about this. I've had these things go bad before, and it's very annoying. I've tried reducing the SERVO RANGE from +/-100% to +/- 95% to help reduce some of these issues,and it does help. Flight performance decrease is very minimal, if even distinguishable. As for the one that's "Dead" (Rudder / Nose Gear Servo) - have you checked to see if the gears are just bound? How about does it move any? Is the motor HOT? There's a few ways they fail, and I've had them all...bound up...over headed...debris on the feedback surface...motor wired broken...or controller failure...the latter being the least common. Dig in and see if you can learn what's going it. I HATE having to fix these things, but I do it too.

Many of the receiver bricks I pull from planes are not programmable. I have a 6 channel board for a Super Cub S with SAFE mode, but no way to activate channels 5 and 6. A different receiver brick may be called for here. I use channel 6 to operate 1S-3S brushless ESCs with 1S brushed receiver bricks (AS6410L) via mixing throttle/ch6 channels in my TX, so that leaves ch 5 open for flaps with tail, elevator and aileron servos intact. A Y-cable can run both aileron servos via the Ch2 port.
@curtrice5730

@@Doggeslife I thought channel 5 in a safe rx was used (programed with safe) and channel 6 was for flaps. In a rx preprogramed by HorizonHobby no flaps no useable channel 6 bad choice MAYBE by horizon Hobby. Unfortuntely I have lots of crashed planes. I have put safe rx in 4 planes all have accepted the donors I make sure I start with donors with same surfaces to control. Then if there is a wonky oscillation I adjust mechanically or in transmitter adjustments. I know ther is many ways to skin a cat. And it all matters which path works for you.
