Spektrum - DX18 Gen1 - Hardware Fault Solution

Here's what happened:
I got a display that said exactly this, in stead of normal startup...
"
System Fault
Your system has a hardware fault which prevents safe operation
Please return it for service
T-Code: 00037BE1h
I-Code: 030AA000h
Sequence: 0
"
...and it failed to operate beyond that, I.E. It wouldn't let me past the error with any action, including removing SD card and removing lipo battery.
Here's how I fixed it...
Start from DX18 off
Hold down the roller WHILE turning on the DX18
This will result in entering System Setup
Exit the System Setup menu and power down the DX18
Power up & hopefully there won't be another hardware fault!!!
Yeah, it's really that simple (unless yours is ACTUALLY broken)..

Yes, but the DX18 has been discontinued for some time.

I’ve been meaning to comment about your new land. That must be so nice to walk out your door and fly in a field. How much is land there. Where I live, it’s a “concrete” jungle. The only space left to build in my area is up. You should start a flying business. A 3 day workshop on your field would be something I’d pay for. Keep it in mind.

Gene, we have signed purchase agreement, but won't actually buy it for a week or two yet... Land is VERY expensive. If you look up the agricultural price per acre...well, we paid several time that PER acre :(... Don't want to talk numbers here publicly, but it was more than we paid for our current house, when we bought it, besides, who needs to retire anyway?!?!! LOL I like the idea. Maybe it can be an RC-BNB (Radio Controlled Bed and Breakfast - yeah!!!)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE POST MY DX6 DID THE SAME THING TO ME AFTER COPYING A PLANE FROM MY DX6E TO THE DX6. I FOUND YOUR VIDEO AND TRIED PRESSING THE ROLLER WHILE POWERING UP AND IT DID NOT WORK BUT I THEN TURNED IT OFF PULLED THE BATTERY FOR 30 SECONDS WITH IT BOTH ON AND OFF THEN TURNED IT OFF RESTORED THE BATTERY AND PRESSED THE ROLLER AND POWERED UP. STILL BAD BUT THEN I DID ONE MORE THING I DECIDED TO POWER UP AND THIS TIME I JUST HELD THE ROLLER DOWN LONGER AND IT WENT TO NORMAL LAST MODEL BUT ONLY AFTER HOLDING DOWN FOR ABOUT 4 SECONDS SO THERE IS SOME SLIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO TYPE RADIOS BUT MINE HAS BEEN FINE NOW FOR SEVERAL DAYS SO AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH. THOSE PEOPLE AT HORIZON AND SPECKTRUM SHOULD POST THIS STUFF .

I'm glad you got yours working! It's a super bad feeling thinking you won't be able to fly "any" of your planes...I have like 70 planes in my DX18, and haven't got any suitable backup. Seems there's quite a lot of differences between the Gen1 to Gen2...I bet that's where we were seeing the difference. Thanks for the feedback, and for watching!

Brian, have a question about the dx18 compared to the dx8. I have the dx8. If you have a dx 8 or dx9, maybe you can answer this. Other than the fact that the dx18 has more channels, is the dx18 better than the dx8 or dx9 as far as the quality in the stick movements and the switches are concerned? thanks for your input

The construction is better on the Gen1 (like mine) from a DX8/9 to 18, YES, incrementally better, but hardly noticeable...however, on the Gen2 I don't know if the mechanisms are any different. I know that there are more mixes and sequencers on the higher numbers. I wanted to have more channel capabilities, but I've never actually used more than 10 channels.

My work pickup truck's transmission just went out about two weeks ago :( It was a lot less than $6400 to fix, and also not my money, so definitely not equivalent, but I still understand from recent troubles...

God bless you Brian! Just save my DX6 and me from an ulcer! Thank you for sharing and giving to the community using your time selflessly. My DX 6 got the same error (T-code 0000E8Ch, I-Code: 03044000h) after an attempted firmware upgrade. I was heading for my hobby store for a new sender, so it just save my day and money :) Thank you!

Really glad to help!!! This issue really irritated me too, since it had been working ALL day, and also since I've NEVER had a single issue with this DX18 since - so a total BS issue??!??!! I'm SOOOO glad I didn't send it in like they suggested!

I had a similar issue with a DX18 G2, I got the system fault error intermittently, and there was some screen issues. I re-installed the Airware and it resolved all the problems.

Airware is what Spektrum calls the TX firmware, go to spektrumrc.com and look at the firmware updates for your transmitter, you may have to create an account and register your radio.

I see..I already updated my firmware, and have an account for update emails, but didn't realize they called it anything other than firmware. Thanks!

What happened to my GEN2 DX6 was that my transmitter’s battery died or was unplugged while the radio was on. This corrupts the RF Module, apparently

All you have to do is get your firmware on the SDCARD and reinsert to update firmware on powerup. This has happen to me many times on different radios..it is a software bug that Spektrum does not seem to recognize. It usually happens to me when I try to load a setup from another Tx. I even called support once and yes they wanted me to send radio back to HH ...no not going to happen.

I did it again, just to be 100% sure. Whenever I create a new model, I "Export All Models" to my SD card (1GB), but you made me question if I'd done it on the last plane...Thanks again!

Still would be a huge pain to have to redo all 18 of them. My F14 had to have taken me about 5 hours to setup...it was really complex, since I always have to over complicate things, as you're well aware :) Just glad you mentioned it, thanks!

hello Brian, do you know how to remove safely adhesive tape from a foam plane? I don't wanna remove the paintjob when I pull off the tape, thanks.

This is very difficult to impossible. Sometimes, you can get lucky and break down the adhesive under the tape with "kicker" (like used to quickly set CA)...BUT that will sometimes breakdown the paint itself. I have found that sometimes it's easier to leave the tape there, and cut the foam pieces apart, then when I'm done, just apply tape above where it had been adjoining two parts. Sorry I don't have a better solution :( If I figure that out, I'll post a video, but I have the same issue all the time...

If you can find one, buy it! Its a GREAT radio, and WAY less overpriced than the new GEN2 radios.

The extra channels will come in handy later on, but the new Gen2 stuff is 2-3 times the price!!! Not worth it, if you ask me (not bad, but definitely not enough good features added to make it worth the money)
