keep firing the ropecaster until the white line appears around the circle. it knocks it down completely so you can crit strike with your melee weapon.

also, once you've filled a status effect (the white circle) don't keep shooting elemental arrows, they don't do anything while the status is up. swap to impact arrows and do damage while they burn, freeze, etc.

Different weapons come with different ammo types, so unfortunately you can’t just add new arrow types to a bow you already own. But you can equip multiple bows for elemental coverage
