Learn to knit the horizontal herringbone knit stitch. There are a few different types of herringbone stitches, this one is the horizontal style. Once you get the hang of it, it's not as hard as it looks.
Cast on a multiple of 2
Row 1: K1, *sl1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped stitch over but without dropping slipped st from left-hand needle knit into the back loop; rep. from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: *P2tog but before dropping stitches from left-hand needle purl first stitch again; rep. from * to end.
