A lot of structural tests have backer plates, some tests require backer, some open root and some with ceramic backer. It's all what ever the wps is for that test for that contract/job calls for.

@@kristianskov4841 yes. I've only done 2 back gauge tests. Then again I've only been welding for 6 years. 125 Amps at pass 1. That's your machine setting, right? On my machine, DCEP, 125A would stick my 7018 1/8" rod. If I set my machine to 150A, no sticking, smooth welds all the time. Out of curiosity, i took a clamp type current meter and it reads 100A when I intentionally stick my rod. And it shows 9A when I'm welding smoothly. The whole time, my machine is set at 150A. What am I doing wrong? Or is there something wrong with my machine? All current readings are taken with the clamp on the positive cable about 1 meter away from the stinger. Great vids, by the way!

I'm not saying I'm a great welder but hot damn son. Those caps are lumpier than my sack. A 1/4 gap? I've never seen a gap bigger than 1/8 for any plate test with a backer. But hey man, you are an instructor of some type I am not. So keep on keeping on. Also manipulate? You mean weave. You shouldn't weave on a test unless it says its called for. If the gap wasn't bigger than my x-wifes snatch you wouldn't have to do that

starts and stops are not discontinuities, they are just a fact of life when you stick weld. As long as you clean your starts and stops, and optimally, feather them down, then they're perfectly acceptable welds assuming you dont have any inclusions or other discontinuities in em

The root word of horizon is horizontal. Similar words for horizontal are FLAT, LEVEL, EVEN, PLAIN?? Salt FLAT? Sea LEVEL? Great PLAINS? By definition a LEVEL line can't have curvature.. Standing water is ALWAYS LEVEL. 70% of Earths surface is LEVEL water.. This means the earth is FLAT... Lake Michigan is 577 feet above sea LEVEL,, Lake Huron is 577 feet above sea LEVEL,, They are both equal? LEVEL? FLAT? No change.. No curve.. No GLOBE!!
