Hormones of Anterior pituitary and Hypothalamus : Endocrine physiology USMLE Step 1
The anterior pituitary gland and hypothalamus are two important structures in the endocrine system that work together to regulate hormone production and release. Here are some of the hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland and hypothalamus:
Hormones of the Anterior Pituitary Gland:
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH): stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol and other steroid hormones
Growth hormone (GH): promotes growth and development in children, and helps maintain muscle and bone mass in adults
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH): stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles in females and sperm production in males
Luteinizing hormone (LH): triggers ovulation in females and stimulates testosterone production in males
Prolactin: stimulates milk production in the mammary glands of lactating females
Hormones of the Hypothalamus:
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH): stimulates the release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary gland
Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH): stimulates the release of GH from the anterior pituitary gland
Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH): stimulates the release of TSH from the anterior pituitary gland
Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH): stimulates the release of ACTH from the anterior pituitary gland
Prolactin-inhibiting hormone (PIH, also known as dopamine): inhibits the release of prolactin from the anterior pituitary gland
These hormones are important for maintaining proper hormonal balance in the body, and their dysregulation can lead to a variety of endocrine disorders.
