I have NEVER heard an engineer on a diesel make there horn "sing" the way a steamer can. High... low...

The fact that 4014s whistle is loud enough to start to overload the cameras microphone from what I assume is a couple hundred feet, should tell you all you need to know about her.

What an amazing & aggressive sounding whistle that big boy 4014 has, this whistle was an excellent fit for this locomotive and you really have to love the sound of it.

If I was the engineer of the freight train I would have done a long blast. That driver barely honked at all

I was lucky enough to see this thing in person twice. The first time I was lucky enough to catch it as it was just ready to leave. I got to be pretty much 30 feet away from it as it pulled out of Omaha Station, blaring it's horn. Suddenly I understood why the Adeptus Mechanicus believe in machines having spirits. It certainly sounds like it does. Praise be the Omnissiah.

I was trying to find a place to park so I could see Big Boy just it was pulling into San Antonio. The visit was not largely announced to the general public so many people had no idea it was coming. It pulled part way out onto a bridge over Nolan St., stopped, and blew two whistle blasts. A man was walking along the street below. After a moment I saw a "wait a minute!" look slowly come across his face as he realized that what he had just heard was something he probably only knew from old movies. He stopped and slowly looked up at the bridge and saw the massive locomotive there. A complete look of incredulous disbelief slowly crept over his face as he walked right out into street to get closer, spellbound and utterly astonished at the sight of something he had only heard about from his grandparents and had only seen in old pictures. He could not believe his eyes. I will never forget his reaction.

I refer to the Big Boy whistle as the Iron Shofar. Sounds heavenly majestic!

That was great. Seen the horn battle a few times. Chased 4014 on the race to Ogden, then through NE Oklahoma during the 1st system tour, then through SE Oklahoma during the 2nd tour. Cant wait to chase 4014 in 2024!!!

I love how loud and proud 4014's whistle sounds. It makes me proud knowing that the world's largest locomotives were American built and is a symbol of our railroad history. I hope they keep 4014 pounding the rails for years to come.
