@@andersnrregren9087 Yes with most plants the foliage will try to match the root size. When I grew my pot plants you can easily see how the roots relate to leafs and you could almost turn it into a math problem if the light was constant. Also guy might be overwatering his trees if it is too wet it cannot breath as most plants breath from their roots. Peter's spagnum moss trick is truly the best because the roots flourish in the moisture but can still breath and spagnum is meant to co-exist with root systems. ALOT of people overwater their plants.

I could't agree more: European Hornbeam, amongst others, is very suitable for bonsaï, even for beginners in this hobby. Personally, I consider it as a big advantage that the species tend to grow its branches more or less horizontally. I once grew one for many years untill a height of about 120 centimeters, partially in the garden soil, at the end in a pot, and I never ever used even one piece of wire on it! I just kept pruning it "in the right direction", regarding the new buds and shoots. So, it's absolutely possible to grow a bonsaï Hornbeam like that, only by specific pruning. It's not even that difficult. Furthermore, at a lot of places in Western Europe, you can find them (seedlings) almost everywhere, almost growing like weeds! So if you think about giving it a try with bonsaï, here is one that is very recommendable and quite easy to grow (and cheap!). Certainly if you have the patience not to pot it up too soon... More or less like mr Chan did... In my experience, it prefers a rather sandy soil and likes quite some water and fertilizer, by the way.

@h.b.1421
@h.b.1421 3 года назад
to replant you have more or less two times in a year to do it, one is in the spring before the buds break and after the frost is done in your area and the other is after the leaves have fallen in the autumn so the roots can regrow before the frost sets in again. Don't do it in the summer. Only do this if you have an emergency replant, but take precautions to kepp the tree alive (that is don't cut any roots, keep it in the shade for a while and so on) and if you know that you can do it and have done so before as roots don't grow as much in the summer compared to spring or autumn
@dbe2705
@dbe2705 3 года назад
Thanks, i not replant, but Can i prune this time of the year? Regards
@h.b.1421
@h.b.1421 3 года назад
@@dbe2705 it depends on what you want to achieve right now. If you only want to prune this years growth to one or two leaves (new buds) do so once the new growth got to 5-10 leaves to get more ramification and to let more light into the inner tree, then go ahead. I wouldn't cut too much and too deep into old wood though if you don't know what you are doing and how to do it. The hornbeams Peter Chan has shown here in this video weren't in full leave yet, I think. Growing bonsai isn't a race you need to win, gain some patience by watching the trees grow and see what they need. The trees will tell you that, if you take a good look at them. But if someone else wants to correct me, go ahead, I won't be offended. Just be friendly with your answer.
