I like several aspects you covered in this video. I note you kept as many fibrous as you could when downsizing the container. This is something I learned the hard way. Now, could you cover promoting fibrous roots, when you have lots of large-medium sized roots, but minimal fibrous ones when trying to downsize the container. Thank you. Look forward to followup video updates on this one.

Fibrous roots grow from the ends of the roots you cut…so it is just a matter of patience to let the tree grow. If you really worry about it, you can add coarse sand to encourage roots to branch. The point I made is it is ok to repot at just about any time of the year, if you retain a balance of root loss with reduction of branches…and keep the tree in shade until it recovers…to avoid drying out.

Thats an interesting technique for me to consider. Breaking it off and creating that dead wood. I'm just starting a more drastic approach. I trunk chopped one of trees and it worked perfectly.. But its already almost as tall. I think I'll have to just chop it again higher up because I know my break wont go as nicely as yours. My new more drastic approach started when birds toppled a plant. It was a nice tree in the making. But with the damage it forced my hand and now I think its onto a higher level

Don't be afraid to make drastic moves with your bonsai! It sounds like your design is going well! Keep us updated :)

Thanks for showing us how you potted and pruned your tree.. It sure looks different in the pot! I've taken a pot full of Trident Maple cuttings today, the way you showed in another video. I think they should be hard enough by now (I hope!)

Fascinating video Milton. Do you intend using all the branches in the final design, or are some of them "sacrificial"?
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 10 месяцев назад
I intend to use all of the branches grown from the branches I left…some I might make into jin as sacrificial branches.

I hope this question comes across in a good way, how much of this applies trees growing in my yard? I want this style tree growing along my driveway… and of course a few growing in a pot

Google to see if you can find "acer buergerianum spp. formosanum". You can also sort through seedlings at sales to look for ones with thicker leaves which are usually more gloasy. There is a fair amount of cross pollination between spp after so many decades here in America. ===

Thanks! I don’t find them readily. I started them from seeds, and then I propagated the cuttings to grow more.
