This new 6-wheel coach from Hornby brings a new and much-needed piece of rolling stock to the market for people who want to model the pre-grouping era. Today Jenny takes a close look at it to see how it holds up.
If you like the look of this coach and fancy one for yourself, here's a link to help you out: bit.ly/39lAkHQ
PLEASE NOTE: Hornby have let me know that the period pictures they are working from show that at least some of these coaches were built with concave buffers and therefore they have chosen to model this unusual feature.

Hi jenny This look great in my opinion. The lighting system is great for dc users. The livery look great well detailed the molded details stuff does not bother me. Glad the footboards look easy to put on The 6 wheeled coaches are based on a nbr coach And 4 wheel coaches are based on a stroudley coach. So I've read and been told by people in the industry Keep safe arp

Great review Jennifer Kirk on the Hornby 6 Wheel Pre-Grouping Coach. Will you review the Hatton's one Jennifer E Kirk? But the underframe details it not really there but the Hatton got I lot more details and look better. At least with the Hatton's the customer gets the choice for Optional lower footboards and there give you the choice for the Centre wheelset on 6 wheel coaches slides for tight curves and is also removable. Plus the light with the Hatton one will work for analogue and DCC plus get an 18-pin decoder socket. Don't like how the customer got to fix the footboards on the Hornby one. Plus the light gives you 200 hours, yes which may seem a good amount of light. But it not that good because let said I have the light on 3 hours per day only in a week I was used up 21 hours of light or that said around 20 hours. Now that does 200 Hours division 21 per week only get 66 days or around 70 days. The light thinks cost £12.99 and the time you pay for the mail around £16.00. Meaning is not that cheaper in the end and costs more than the Hatton one. Now we now can get around 70 days let see how many time in the year I was has to replace the light we get around 365 meaning I had to replace them light 5 times in a year it would coast £64.95 and not include if you got more then one. Now because we now want the prices going to be for the year £64.95 we can find the total value if I have them for 70 years it was being £4546.50 I could get around 126 Hatton's one for that prices and with no worry about the lifetime baned. I could run the Hatton's one forever with the light and don't need to worry about filling them up. Because you got to Keep taking the roof off the Hornby one you could damage the toolings. I will be stick will the Hatton's hand get (NCB blue, SECR, LQY brown Q umber) But keep safe Jennifer Kirk in these hard times.

I think the LED lighting makes a huge difference in the appearance and interest of the car paired with some passenger figures. I think the car end detail should be a little more pronounced with either separately applied detail or a more pronounced tooling detail to look the part.

I think the lights are much to bright.. They were really dim in the 1950's and would be very difficult to read by. Thats when they did not go out altogether.

I wonder if it would be possible to file the buffers flat? As they are quite thick to start with they could accommodate some flattening. But why they are made like that is a mystery...could SK comment? Otherwise, what another lovely product, we are so spoilt for decent r-t-r these days.

Not as easy as you may think as the interior will Need modification to fit the battery. And also the body fitting would need changing to make it as easy as these coaches to access the battery.

an excellent review , i think your comments about the end of the coaches are valid, but i suppose Hornby were trying to get to a price point to appeal to all , sometimes details such as the lap irons are left out to achieve this.

Nice looking carriages. The ends look odd in that there are too many lamp brackets if run to represent a pre 1900 train. Optional gas tanks for underneath or oil lamp covers for the roof too would be nice.
@bionicgeekgrrl
@bionicgeekgrrl 3 года назад
The coach though is a post 1923 condition example due to the livery and has electric lighting so there wouldn't be any oil or gas fittings. Other livery examples might be different though but not looked at these much.
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways 3 года назад
@@bionicgeekgrrl I suspect that the same moulds are used for all the examples. Most of the big 4 companies were taking 4 and 6 wheel coaches out of passenger carrying service in the 20s with the remaining ones in departmental service or on light railways
@bionicgeekgrrl
@bionicgeekgrrl 3 года назад
@@LeslieGilpinRailways there is certainly that possibility. But just gives a good opportunity for some modelling really. As for 4 and 6 wheel coaches, some lasted a reasonable time. On the southern some of them lasted well past the 20s, by virtue of being put onto new frames and made into emus! The southern rarely scrapped anything that could have a use.

Two notes though, it seems like Hornby has looked on how to turn on and off lights from Rapido. Rapido uses a wand to do same thing. The other thing, unlike many continental brands, the NEM pockets on the Hornby model makes it harder to change the couplings to something else. I have seen this on some of the Liliput models too. Liliput is one of the brands in the Bachmann range. Ihis could have done so much better.

@otisjb
@otisjb 3 года назад
There are so many different options out there, you can't do them all at once. The attractive thing about these coaches for manufacturers is that they can keep re-releasing them in different schemes forever. Don't forget though that there's only one RTR GER locomotive on the market atm so you can't blame them for not doing it immediately. Hattons do have some crimson variants in the works for their third batch though. Additionally remember that Simon is only responsible for public relations type business and doesn't decide the ins and outs of models produced.

What a beautiful job Hornby have made of these pre-grouping coaches. The ends may look a bit plain, but are you really going to see that when they are running? Today, I have looked through both manufactures liveries and neither of them have coaches for the NorthEastern Railway which had 4 and 6 wheel coaches in a darker Maroon with more blue in the colour. So I will have to run the J72 with some Celestory Coaches for now. (Still no layout yet.) Martin. (Thailand)

Any such coaches on the Southern were gone before the 1930s, so the idea of using them in BR livery on Hop Pickers specials is a non-starter, I'm afraid. In fact most were rebuilt by combining bodies from 6-wheelers onto bogie underframes pre-first-world war.

The market has been crying-out for pre-grouping coaches for over three generations. Yet another pig-in-a poke 'generic' design. Far FAR better to have copied one actual design - and then had a compromise on other liveries to pad the range out. That way at least SOME versions would be accurate - rather than NONE. Hornby have repeated Hattons exact same error. The market has been crying out for some decent six and four wheel pre-grouping coaches since the war - and now we get TWO ranges of parodies.... What a bloody shame. What a huge missed opportunity.
