I have watched a lot of recent Hornby Black 5 reviews and the positive ones outnumber the negative ones by close to 3 times now. Negative opinions tend to come from people who are more intent on finding problems rather than finding solutions. I know in the modern world, with its 'entitled' attitude towards goods and services, there can be an argument for saying 'I paid for X so I expect X'. This is what differentiates a good railway modeller; the difference is one buys solutions and the other creates solutions.
Fantastic and i couldnt agree more thats why i try to always find the positive in every loco i review i do understand the its new it should work but for 5 minutes a little tlc and a amazing loco that works perfectly and honestly i actually enjoyed finding the issue fixing it then to have it 100% felt like a achievement too! I thoroughly enjoyed this honest and positive review, and with it's touch of humour it was like a breath of fresh air compared to some who can't wait to knock the very manufacturers who have enabled my enjoyment of this hobby for 60 years. That explains how another RU-vidr's Black 5 ran after fitting another tender, but there were glue marks everywhere and the running plate was warped. This model would have been even better with a Die-Cast Boiler and then it would be Valve for Money. Martin. (Thailand)
Yes that would defintley explain it that does seem like they got a unfortunate one but as you can see this one is perfect and while die cast is better i think value for money is still good with the level of detail the lights fitted then being able to change them as that would be a expensive service to have it done after with wiring but again i always try to see the positive as much as i can😊 and wow Thailand! Awesome video kev! I have always wanted a black 5, and i was very tempted by this new offering, however i think the price sort of steers me away from this loco... there have been many reviews that have said the tender drawbar is dodgy, however i beloeve that with a bit of running yours seems a very good example! I havent watched the full video yet, as i wanted to get my comment in, and ill watch the rest soon! I may have a look at getting an older hornby one or the new smoke generator fitted p2 for the same price, but i shall have to see! great review as always kev, and i ddo like the long video style and i wait in anticipation for the next review!

Thanks for the video. Are you sure there are only 4 connections at the loco to tender coupling. I have not got one yet but I think there are 4 connections underneath the coupling tender side as well as 4 on top. There must be more than 4. two for motor, two for track pick ups and there must be some for the lights which can be controlled from a decoder.
I think it is just the 4 as i took the loco end apart there was only 4 wires appearing to come from the back of that part of the coupling but i get where you are coming from with the lights firebox glow and motor there definatley doesnt seem enough but it somehow all works! Thanks for watching😊

That's an interesting observation. I wonder if the blunt side of a scalpal blade might fit in that gap a little easier. Did you check for any loose crank pins on yours as this was also reported as an issue for a couple of reviewers.?
Well i did try another method later after the video using a pin that did seem to work better being a lot smaller! The crank pins seemed ok with this one but now you mention it thank you i will go and recheck with my tool to make sure they are secure. Thanks for watching😊
I think you're missing the point. For the cost of this loco, there should be NO requirement to fiddle with it at all !! I doesn't matter how great it looks ""
I do say that it should require no messing about and i do agree with what your saying you pay for a product it should be working but as i say i always try to look at the positive and the people who have this running perfect out the box issue free have a incredible loco packed with a ton of extras. Hi, to be fair Hornby do produce a very good steam train, unfortunately the quality control isn’t working as it should be and the fact that these locos aren’t exactly cheap doesn’t help, no manufacturer is perfect but at least some do their very best to make the customer happy, i would like one one these lovely looking locos but the bad reviews and the issues I’ve had with previous purchases have put me off, eventually these locos will come up in a sale where the price won’t hurt so much, it’s a bit of a lottery where you could end up with a very bad purchase.
The crank pins have a tendency to falling out and the front light units have been glued in at the factory when they should be a friction fit, it’s very commendable thing you’ve done here but it’s down to Hornby to sell a loco fit for purpose out of the box, there are black 5’s with more manufacturing issues than what you have shown.
Oh yes i completely agree with you and a bad experience will always be negative towards a company which is completely understandable especially given the price of some of these locomotives most of mine arnt new and does take a long time to save up for but chose to bite the bullet with this one and give it a chance i do try and see the positive in everything i review but always point out issues. This did have a issue that i could repair but that isnt the point quality control should have picked this up and recalled or done something sooner to avoid disappointment really appreciated your comment as seeing other reviews its understandable with consumer frustration leading to a negative company image hopefully this can be recovered though again thank you for feeling comfortable with your comment as welcome comments like this and maybe they may get seen for them to do something about it so thank you and Thanks for watching😊

@@Themodelrailer If Hornby did their best these issues wouldn’t be as bad as they seem, the manufacturing process are failing because they haven’t addressed the problems they have, these models were designed without faults, it’s not Hornby’s first rodeo and it won’t be the last, you don’t get what you pay for when your model is not fit for purpose, their customer service department isn’t much better, many customers get abandoned by Hornby because they don’t care! They were a superb manufacturer back in the day with bulletproof products, things have changed and will probably take a lot of positivity to put things right, Hornby need to up their game and have better contact with the factory.
How can it be amazing when it’s an inaccurate model??? There are many issues with this model. Hornby have not researched this model properly wrong brake shoes, there should be no daylight between the boiler and the running plate, wrong bogie wheel profile, Ash pan actuator should not be there on this early build Black Five. Issues with wash out plug detail. Smoke box dart gap between the engine and tender and the lamps are very poor indeed. This is a very disappointing model given that Hornby said it had raised the bar with this model. Why do so many people on RU-vid use words like Stunning and amazing when you Pay good money for poor quality products. Accurascale have shown whats possible with their Manor Class Hornby are not in the same league, sorry to be so negative but Hornby have built this model up and definitely not delivered.
First of i have to say that highly respect your clear passion for such a model and a product and wanting it to be accurate and there is nothing wrong with that i just look at the model in general and for me overall this looks a stunning locomotive packed with features it would be hard making a model 100% accurate but compared with the locos say 10-15 years ago which where even less accurate then there are constant leaps forward in the right way i always try to look at the positive side to all models i review and would be honest in a dreadful one for me the tiny details i dont mind as long as the general loco condition looks good i do completely understand where you are coming from though and if this isnt as accurate as they say it should have been but i guess there is a ways to improve every model. I suspect none of the micro-inaccuracies you have mentioned would ever be noticed by many model railway enthusiasts, myself included, and I don't think for one moment they make this a poor model. Great model at a fair price it seems to me.
@@Daveonthelevel Everyone has their own opinion, but Hornby themselves were given much feedback when the model was in development and various issues were discussed and Hornby said that they would be corrected, and that they need to be careful with using preserved locomotives for accuracy??? There are clear differences between Black Fives during their lives, Hornby have produced some good models but they are not consistent.
