I got one of these not so long ago and had a similar knocking noise from the valve gear. The front pin was just catching the inside of the piston motion as they passed each other. I tried splaying out the motion a bit to no avail. The problem in the end was the drive gear itself, there was a small moulding pip on one of the teeth that was hitting the worm and causing the axle to lurch to the side causing the collision. After removing the pip all runs smoothly. I have also removed the traction magnets as a matter of course as they serve no purpose on modern track and just create extra drag.
Hi Bill My Class 4P surges too and already has the same motor as you have just installed. I'll try adjusting the position of the worm to see if that helps. Noone seems to have done a service on this motor type so maybe in the future you could look at doing a service to show everyone the critical points of the motor to oil etc. Thanks a lot for your help. Excellent. I'd like to do the same to my old Hornby 2MT. With the high prices of new models (Hornby's new 2MT has a rrp of £185.00) I think there is going to be a bright future for conversion kits that give old locomotives new leases of life.
I've converted a few Lime diesels using c d drive motors at £1.00 each ..they run just as well if not better than the new Hornby class 66 I've just purchased !!!!!
An excellent upgrade to a beautiful loco. I have come to really appreciate the LMS livery. Everyone will want these brackets now, I know I would like a couple. Kevin, if you are out there, I hope you put them on the market. 😊

Thanks very much for documenting this conversion Bill. My own 2300 is growing increasingly restless whilst relegated to the fiddle yard and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a motor mount, or better still motor, mount and worm conversion kit, from Kevin.
The version of this loco from the 1990,s had this type of motor with a metal bracket. Looks like a very worthwhile mod to an old loco....... A new lease of life!

Hi Bill, I like to convert some X04 motors to Mabuchi type 7, but there are so many worms available that for me Dutchmen it's impossible to see. All my stock have 40 Tooth brass or Nylon gears and I need the X.... type worm with the 1.5mm axel dia. Do you know what the Hornby X type worm I need.
How can one go about getting those 3D printed parts, and what worm drive did you use for the type 7 motor? Please. I have 4 old Tri-ang Hornby locos that I would like to convert to DCC and the old X03/04 motors are a little power hungry for DCC chips

Could do with some of those for my aging xo4 motored locos, so kevin , if you read this , get them on Ebay , you'll sell quite a few reading the comments on here.
Hi Bill ,, What the heck is that thingy called with the clamps and the magnifying glass are on actually called. Id like to buy one but its a bit hard to look up something to buy when ya dont know what its called. Hope you can help with putting a name to cool looking gizmo. Also you picked it up in the last few minutes the ticking i can still hear it but not as bad. Anyhoo cheers from john in Australia.
