I do like the 1980 catalogue. Some good layout shots featured. I still have the king size set. But with the earlier R793 version. There was some variation with the rolling stock included between R544 and R793. But pretty much the same set. Got some pics of it, will upload to FB.

It's a great set and would be great to see the photos. Cheers Rick.

Great look at another catalogue. Somebody somewhere has collected every one of these yearly produced Model Railway Catalogues and is still adding to their collection today.

Hi Steve I'm sure they are. I had a look at Hornbys latest the other day and it's the size of an encyclopedia! Cheers Rick

Hi Rick and Pauline ,, again great video there m8's ,, when you were goin through the catalogue you got to the part where (16m.17s) you said what year did these bridges come out and I said1958 at the exact same time you said 1958 as only a coupla weeks ago i got another bridge set with the risers .. & Pauline your right the road on that last bit of the cattledog looked crap but in my era we thought that star trek looked realistic but when you watch it now well you go look at that show and how did I believe all the hi tekko stuff ? well I supppse it was because it was all new to us and we have the benefit now of hindsight ,, haha. I love your videos so please keep up the oarsum videos you put on here for us all to watch and enjoy. Cheers from John in Australia.

Hi John, I had the tipper set around 1980 but never installed it on my layout. I got another one a couple of years ago and we are going to film it in our next vlog. Pauline is a Star Trek fan of the newer series. Cheers for watching Rick

Imagine them sticking sticker decals on loco's now, the hole modeling scene would be outraged.😅 What really sticks out to me is, when you look at the models of that time, not all, but a lot of them had that cheap plastic toy look, often serious non realistic scale details, no separate details, all a bit spartan wasn't it. Although some of these models are still produced, the did undergo a facelift, and I think the chemical composition of the plastic has also changed a lot. But I guess a lot of things of that time missed that fine touch of design, even western car at that time where quite spartan. It only started to change when Japanese cars came up with design interiors, that everything started to change. Tell Pauline, that was the famous "road to nowhere" in the catalog, it gave the Talking Heads a hit…😉🤣
@wellchuffedrailways
@wellchuffedrailways Год назад
Hi Danny, you are correct, Mainline gave Hornby a real kick up the backside when it came to all the details and paint finish. Oh and "road to nowhere" is a great song. Cheers Rick

Great vid. I love looking through these old catalogues. The early 80's are my favourites (my childhood I suppose) The artwork and photos bring back the memories. Just picked up a rake of four wheeler Caledonians to go with the little pug. Smart looking little train. The mail coaches are great fun when they do work. Keep up the great videos.
@wellchuffedrailways
@wellchuffedrailways Год назад
Those Caledonian coaches are something we will look out for on our next outing. My list is growing. My favourite Hornby catalogues are the 78 and 79 editions. Thanks for watching Rick

That was a great video and interesting catalog. It was around this time that the US company, Tyco, last forays into model trains was all space-oriented. They had a "rocket moon train" which could do a 90-degree up the wall and curl back down ability. As we had no real consistent passenger service outside the East Coast Corridor, they went futuristic and tried to jump all the toy and movie trends.
@wellchuffedrailways
@wellchuffedrailways Год назад
Hi Anthony, a rocket moon train lol! I will have to have a look for one of those. I'm guessing it wasn't super detailed. All the best Rick

Hi, great video, superb 1980 catalogue, I still look at the models from back then, funny how Hornby keep bringing back models from years gone buy with heavy 2023 prices, so many items from Lima old mouldings.
@StormmyStormmy

I’m surprised you don’t have a zero 1 system, I believe that the coding paint was misused by people trying to code the loco modules, I hard wired mine and they all worked fine, if I don’t find a home for it I might donate it to you guys, I see you like the older nostalgic items of the past, I like all the modern stuff to be fair, thanks for sharing. ☯😎
@wellchuffedrailways
@wellchuffedrailways Год назад
Hi, yes Hornby have certainly got their money's worth from the Lima mouldings. I wonder how many they are still using? Cheers Rick
@digitalcareline

Brilliant insight to the production from 1980 - Nice to learn production numbers - wonder how they stack up today with shorter runs. I had catalogues from the late 1980s - always fun for the Christmas List Though my dad (sorry, Santa) discovered Lima was more our price bracket. Do you think the locos with the stickers on the cab had the 1979 numbers already printed then covered up to reheat the model?.
@wellchuffedrailways
@wellchuffedrailways Год назад
Hi glad you enjoyed the video. Those cab side stickers on were brought out when there was no variation in the locos. The whole of the cab from the window down is a sticker and looks worse in real life than in photos. Oh and I always preferred the Lima models to the equivalent Hornby back then. All the best Rick

Hey Ray. Ray was always tinkering. I was 21 in 1980, and it would be another 20+ years before I got back into modelling. I did get a load of Hornby magazines and I scanned them in to my computer, saved to hard disk etc. now external Hd kaput, so trying to revive Lol. Great video again guys, like the added info, suggestion, don’t use background music, it muffled some of Pauline speaking. You youngsters are always in to gadgets, lmao. Have a great and safe week. 🥳😂😎😎

Good old Ray, we will do another one of these at some point but we have a few new things to do in the meantime. I liked the music but it was a bit loud or we were too quiet? Cheers for watching Rick ps The best place for catalogues is eBay.

Hi Rick I have the Hornby ROVEX set from 1974 almost mint condition complete with all the paperwork and the 1974 catalog. It has lots of scenery cardboard tunnel 2 platform station and building signal level crossing loads more all part of the box set also has the GWR pannier tank with freight wagons

Ray fell on hard times and had to sell the layout. His son found many of the items on a bargain hunt and is looking to get the layout up and running again. The daughter emigrated to Canada and now runs a stick insect sanctuary. Rays wife left him and married the owner of the local model shop before they retired and bought a boat and called it Dignity.
