In this special episode, I take a look at what many consider to be some of the finest work Hornby have ever produced. How does the super detail Flying Scotsman hold up 20 years later? And does it do the legend herself justice as she celebrates her centenary year?

I’m a simple man I see Flying Scotsman I watch video and hit like! Always gotta love a FlyingScotsman model, especially for around 30 pounds is a great price. Tbf to the ring field motors they are very repairable and modern replacements, atleast in the UK, are easy to find! Great video can’t wait to see what you make next!

😂😂😂 I can appreciate that! Thank you so much, yeah I guess compared to UK pricing it’s a real steal in many regards. Thank you for your support and for popping in All the best, Hylt

Hi Hylt, well done on the growth of your channel. What a bargain that Flying Scotsman was and a lovely loco for it’s age. Also some nice video editing of the close up shots of the loco. The good thing about the older or more basic locos is that you can always upgrade and improve them when you have the money to and its fun personalising your loco fleet. Best wishes Mark

Hi Mark, means a hell of a lot to me that you swung by to check this out, thank you. Yes indeed, seems like a good bargain, and hopefully if need be, I’ll be able to convert her to DCC in the future. Thank you for your kind comments, I’m trying to improve my editing with each episode, long way to go still. Looking forward to your next video 👍 Have a great week, Hylt

That is a great price; the apple green one you referred to is on sale in the UK (new) for £100+. Never really wanted a scotsman, possibly due to preferring LMS engines but a nice looking engine in BR green. Out of interest, they think only a relatively small proportion of the engine is original, which given its age and use isn't really surprising. I am sure the site will continue to grow👍👍👍

I’m amazed that it would be so much more expensive there. I’m inclined to agree with you, I’m very fond of the LMS stuff, more so than any of the big 4. Thanks for popping in and for the support Hugh ☺️

The older models do have their advantages. The ringfield motor can be worked on and brushes and springs are still available. I can remember when some of these models were new. Thanks for showing a lovely locomotive. Regards Paul.

They certainly do! And I am quite comfortable with the ringfield now so should need be, I know I could service her well. Thanks for popping in Paul. Regards, Hylt

When something is resorted, it should be restored to the same condition in which it left the makers. They spent a large sum of money doing this to The Flying Scotsman and then had it painted in the colour and numbering of when it was retired from revenue service. She is LNER 4472 and will be remembered as that. Martin. (Thailand) I also have trouble with Customs.

@Proper_Chuffed 8 месяцев назад
Hi Martin, totally hear you on that, guess there is a lot of debate on that. I like the Brunswick, maybe a little biased but I see your point and the LNER Apple Green is brilliant. Even more authentic would be 1472 would it not? Cheers, Hylt

Hello Rinke. Thank you, I agree 😊 yes I did, shes in good condition internally fortunately. I also needed to add a traction tyre as the old one was totally messed up. Haha yes, the plaster, managed to stab myself with a fishplate 😂

Hi, Well done on all your subscriptions onward and upward comes to mind so this model you have does show that there were very detailed locomotives made yes no sprung buffers or painted cab (but when running does it matter) and a basic drive train but for a DC loco runs very well so well done for finding her. You asked for the F/S we have so I have the A1 type very much like yours but I also have the A3 one that now runs on the Railtours circut giving pleasure to future steam followers so your next challenge if you choose to accept it is to buy the A3 F/S as it should be a loco we all should have along with this one you do have. Cheers Robert.

Hello Robert 😊 thank you so much for stopping by again, that’s wonderful, please do share a video of your Scotsman in your next live session! Yes indeed, sounds like a plan, I’ll see if I can find one. Cheers, Hylt

Absolutly fantastic video mate, i love this videos taking a look at older model. I too am a budget model railroader and my collection is mainly built on the older less exspensive second hand stuff so these videos are not only relatable to me, but also very enjoyable to watch. Thanks for the content, keep it up!

Thank you so much mate, greeting from SA to Aus 😎 appreciate that immensely, I think it’s easy to feel like your content isn’t relevant when you’re dealing with slightly older models, hence my hopes that shining a new light on them might give them a bit more appreciation. All the best, Hylt

Wow you certainly get some good deals over there . A really nice loco for £30 . She is pretty well detailed . People get sniffy about tender drives . Actually I think they give better haulage capacity , probably in part due to the traction tyres . As long as the loco motion rotates I’m absolutely fine with it . Love these older models . My earliest dates from 1965 , so keep them coming .

Hi Russel, thanks for popping in again, it seems so? 😅 in general the German stuff is much more sought after here in South Africa, which makes the British stuff cheaper I suppose, but also harder to find. I agree with you, they seem very strong. 💪 Lovely, what model would that be? Thanks again, Hylt

Congratulations on 400 subscribers: you much be doing something right! I agree that Hornby's Super Detail locos were the sweet spot of detail v price. You paid £30?? A boxed example like that would cost at least £70 here in the UK! One fact regarding Flying Scotsman that I hadn't appreciated until her recent centenary celebrations (which, ofcourse, drew crowds wherever she went) was that she's the oldest mainline-capable steam loco in the UK. I have a couple of Flying Scotsman models. One dates back from the early 1970s. I've just got it back from OOBill who fitted a new motor in it (one of those replacement units from Peter's Spares he fitted to his own example). It now runs better than ever. My other example is of the engine in its original A1 condition, which is when she broke the 100mph barrier. It's probably of a similar vintage to your loco. Keep up the good work. Your enthusiasm for your locos is great!

Hello again Stephen, thank you very much! Yes indeed, seems like a total steal at that price, again, seems like they’re rather undervalued here 😅 so counting my blessings! That’s really cool, had no idea she was the oldest on the mainline, makes her even more special in that regard. I am quite enamoured with her, not sure if it’s the loco or the legend, can’t quite place my finger on it. That’s brilliant, I would love to get an A1 version of her in the future. Thank you for dropping by and sharing your thoughts again, I really do appreciate it. Hylt

Yes, that is the right way, live your model railroading dreams without manoevering near bankruptcy, and newer models are often more difficult to service and not in all cases better runners on rails. Congratulations! And yes, I suppose get more happy with your used model than with the latest Märklin-Version. Märklin created somewhat a hype around models entirely made of metal diminuishing others, many German youtubers jumped onto this train too, but now there are often problems as they do not tow too much and in some cases they tow less than their prototype could. Tyres and gears wear down far more quickly and some types of turnouts lose their motors because the heavy models might impose too much pressure on some of its rather filigrane parts.

Hello Lars, right you are 😅 it’s very easy to slip into the trap of overspending with this hobby. Thanks very much. I must say I’ve seen a few Marklin locos in person and I really am impressed by them overall. It’s not a bad thing to raise the bar, but sometimes just a bit too high? 😂 All the best and keep well. Why do people keep on chirping on about Flying Scotsman? Nigel Gresley was NO WAY the best designer of steam locomotives in Britain even during his time in Office. William Stanier on the LMS created far, far better locomotives with more efficient & up to date design practices. George Churchward on the GWR was also far superior to Gresley. In fact, the Gresley Pacifics FAILED to impress against GWR 4-6-0 Castle Class Collet designed Locos in the 1923 Locomotive Trials. Collet on the GWR based his Castle Class Loco on George Churcwards classic turn of the century 'Star' Class Loco. So lacking were the Gresley Pacifics during the Trials, he took his Locos back to Doncaster after the Loco Trials & MODIFIED them to comply with GWR design practices. All British Railway Locomotives designed after Railway Nationalisation in the late 1940s were based on GWR Locomotive design principles going back to the 1900s - Britannia Class, & all the Standard Class Locos can trace their design lineage back to George Churchward on the GWR. Gresley loco design principles had long been rejected by the 1950s. The Flying Scotsman is only a mediocre performer for a 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive. It only gained a reputation due to The Media latching onto its name. You can always rely on The Media to get things completely wrong. Afterall. It's The Media that insists on calling a Steam Locomotive - a Steam Train, - isn't it? 😂 Oh My God - a Steam Train. 😅

Hey there, Thanks for dropping by, I’m rather uneducated with regards to perhaps the nitty gritty details of such things and you really seem to know your stuff, I can only answer from the perspective of someone abroad and with an appreciation for steam at, I guess, a more surface level. I was just really happy to get a loco I’ve always held in high regard but I totally see what you’re saying here. Certainly it seems I have a lot to learn. But thank you very much for your insight here, I greatly appreciate it 😊 Regards, Hylt
@MySteaming

@Proper_Chuffed extremely honest of you to admit your lack of knowledge on these matters. Many are 'swept away' be modern belief the The Flying Scotman was a successful locomotive during its working life & epitomised the best working practices of British Locomotive Design. It wasn't & it didn't. Not to say that it was an awful design - however, it doesn't deserve the glory & respect that's been thrust upon it by The Media. Legends can be created out of ignorance & badly informed people. The British Media do it constantly.

@@MySteaming that makes a lot of sense, I guess, don’t meet your heroes 😂 I will most certainly endeavour to learn a bit more about her, and Gresleys work, I will say, on a more surface level again, I quite prefer the LMS locos though, they look really beautiful and as you said, were clearly the superior machines in many regards. It’s great to learn more and get this kind of insight from someone with knowledge on it. Thank you. Have a great day, Hylt 😊
