What an absolute privilege to see Horowitz play this! Every pianist on earth should see this! Everything is so VIVID. His ability to change his touch on a moment-by-moment basis is unique. Everyone else seems so COLOURLESS to me after Horowitz. Pure magic.
Could not disagree more. This is the period when he was heavily addicted to pain meds and at his worst form. His playing here is sloppy and not the masterful Horowitz we are used to seeing.

NOT HUMAN !!! This man must have been an alien or a robot. Nobody has every had such absolutely perfect control, digital dexterity and musical virtuosity all wrapped into one being. Never misses a note, no matter how complicated the fingering is, no matter what the key signature. Of all the great pianists of the past and of the present, there has never been and probably will never be another HOROWITZ...he had it all AND it all came with a library of congress memory and repertoire to go with it. At times his left hand-right hand independence is so distinct that it sounds like there are two or more people playing. Also, nobody, and I mean NOBODY could play OCTAVES like Horowitz did...it is infuriating that somebody could be that great and so head and shoulders above everybody else. THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME....CASE CLOSED
One must really agree with these observations. I came to Mr Horowitz as a child and even then was enraptured by something almost beyond ability in his playing.
Horowitz made music out of every trill, turn, scale, chord, or melody line. And such wonderful use of rubato! Everything is so well thought out and clear, it draws you completely into the emotions of the score. Compare that with competition winners who are big on fast and loud, but have very little dynamic variety or nuance. Sit at a piano competition and close your eyes. You can barely tell one pianist from another. Horowitz was genius. Pure genius.
Rubato, which literally means "robbed" in Italian, refers to rhythmic freedom by a slight speeding up and then slowing down of the tempo of a piece at the discretion of the pianist.
It is hard to take to see a pianist who has this degree of perfection, both in technical virtuosity and musicality. He had to have been an alien because no mere human can play like this. The independence between his left and right hands is so distinctive and powerful and equal that at times it sounds like there is more than one person playing. INCREDIBLE There have been, there are and there will ALWAYS be many great pianists but till now there is still only one and only ONE who is at the absolute top of the heap by himself....HOROWITZ. I have listened to dozens of performances by all the " greats " and anyone who can play any of these piano busters to any degree deserves a lot of credit but NOBODY has has his combination of gifts and skill set.
Rubinstein Was an Amazing and wonderful pianist, better Then Horowitz and everyone in playing Chopin. But Horowitz..Horowitz has a touch and a style that i can recognize between a thousand...
Inimitable VH. Demonstrates his magnificent Artistry. Reveals the Genius of Chopin in a composition some might consider a salon piece. One does not find this treasure programmed frequently, but the composition is delectable under the hands of VH. VH appears to enjoy the twists and turns, little dramas, a touch of intermittent wistfulness, and peppiness contained within. As Argerich once stated, “ Horowitz was the best lover a piano could have”. Even at this age, VH was so good.
Horowitz plays with such incredible dynamics even awesome through RU-vid. As we know , RU-vid compresses audio. Imagine the sound and dynamics when hearing him play live in one room

it IS a "peculiar piece" - the history is that a young Chopin, in 1833 Paris, was anxious to write a piece who's sensitivities would both please the ladies of the salon as well as the bravura impress the vituosi of the day. ‘I am forced’, he wrote, ‘to think about forging a path for myself as a pianist’. My dear sir, you just didn't forge a path, you burnt the forest to the ground.
First time I hear this piece in such an interpretation, so happy sounding, I think it fits well with the piece and actually makes so much more sense than other interpretations I've heard.
I've heard this piece played very well by many other pianists. However, there is no one that plays it quite like Horowitz. There is an inimitable electricity in his playing. It's like the incredible clarity of the crack of a whip followed by the softest of whispers. He puts you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the intensity to run away from him at any moment and for his fingers to fly off in all directions. Yet, his control is impeccable. Amazing!!
You may not always agree with Horowitz's Chopin. The master is reputed to have argued with Listz, among others, for bringing too much thunder and lightening to his compositions; he was termed "umbrageous".....but I think that the more mature Chopin would have admired Horowitz's technique and with his emotional interpretations of his work, Just my opinion.
To add to my earlier compliments and glowing reviews of this musical genius and his perfect technical virtuosity and memory... there is also the super human physical endurance that he displays dispite of his advanced age...which you ever played even one of these piano busters you would know. Here is a man who at this later stage of life was barely able to walk or talk... and then he sits down at the piano and becomes SUPERMAN... Just amazing... truly blessed by the CREATOR GOS and one of gifts to mankind
It’s not just virtuosity that distinguishes him from the rest. He had an extraordinary and unique voice. With supra human control, each of his fingers could produce its own gorgeous and independent sound. No one has or will ever sound like him! His hands were also beautiful to watch!

I cannot get over this whole video it really is amazing and I feel privileged to be able to view it over and over...the video itself is of great quality and the music is amazing and Horowitz is one of those leganday figures in human history that really inspires me.

...he was definitely special and missed greatly! How does he do those octaves with such a controlled degree of force? I read other musicians used to peek over each others heads during a performance to see how he can do those octaves.The more I listen to this Rondo the more I like it and respect the difficulty in playing it. I just recently viewed Richard Charles-Hamelin play this at Chopin competition and it was also wonderful.by the way it says someone other than me made this comment but it is me Steve W.,
I had the same feeling. Actually, I don't like it, but Horowitz force me to listen and admire his phenomenal rendition. This is a masterclass from which all pianist must learn the art of sound. Amazing.😍
@@Yannoux3000 c'mon that's really poor, perhaps only op.1 is weaker. It's not that because it's Chopin we should abandon our ability to separate wheat from darnel. Horovitz is great but even him can't make it a masterpiece. There is plenty of obscure good stuff from unsung musicians out there that is way better than this one. Chopin remains Chopin no discussion. He's a genius. But op. 16 remains poor. At least this is my opinion and my whole respect to whom thinks differently.
You are right that this is not one of Chopin's more " recognizable " and melodic compositions, but HOROWITZ turns it into a study of amazing technical virtuosity...as he always does and he uses it to show off his incredible skills, and that makes it at least somewhat enjoyable....however , you will not whistling this tune, or lack of same one on the way home Since Chopin is the greatest composer for the piano of all time and since virtually all of his other works are so fantastic, so melodic, memorable and intricately complex...we should cut him a little " slack " on this rather mindlessly meandering composition which sounds like it was written as a homework assignment. On the other hand, I wish I could write just one such non memorable, non melodic and mindless " homework " piece like this.
It's still one of Chopin's weaker works. Unusually shallow, but we all like to indulge ourselves in frippery from time to time. Thank heaven for the rest of Chopin's output though.
Without any doubt ; Vladimir(Volodya)Horowitz is (was) the BEST pianoplayer éver in the world !! Besides that , is he my favourite player !! GOD BLESS YOU !!!!!!!
The greatest pianist of the 20th century (and easily better than any today), he made plenty of mistakes during this performance (for 60 Minutes and Mike Wallace) - I've watched and listened to it hundreds of times, but played with reckless abandon, common during his later years, which is itself not only charming but appropriate and detracts not at all from this rendition. Horowitz recorded this in studio during the late 60's (CD can be found but not easy *to* find) and THAT rendition is superbly clean. Perfect, in fact, for those interested.

I've got a really good musical memory - much better than many of my contemporaries when a teenager. But somehow Chopin and Scriabin just stick the "wrong" / unexpected notes in and make it quite tricky to remember all of them. Not that it matters too much with Scriabin, but with Chopin you can't get away with leaving out a few notes here and there...
+cesare cherchi uhm, you clearly don’t know enough about Horowitz. This recording cane after years of alcohol and drug abuse. By 1965 he’d been off the concert stage for 12 years. To steady his nerves, he would drink and do drugs. This is NOT Horowitz at his peak. For that, you’d have to look back to the 40’s 50’s.
He plays it like no other. It sounds like no other. I have the impression that it is Liszt who is playing Chopin. Horowitz stands to piano like Paganini stands to violin.
